Concrete
Angel:
A Child Abuse
Story.
Chapter
6
I
drive to
school on Monday with an empty stomach and a thoughtful mind. I
have about three dollars from my part-time job at Guitar Center. I
can afford lunch today.
In chemistry, I sit next to Jake gingerly. He glances my way once,
and I smile thinly. "Hey Jake." I say. He nods back once.
"Are you excited for winter break this
weekend?"
He nods again, and Mr. Kewer tells us the assignment. I actually
read the labels this time. "Um, maybe I should do it?"
Jake says.
"Jake, come on. That won't happen again." I
say and roll my eyes. I pour in some
sodium sulfate with potassium nitrate into the
beaker, and stir it. Jake adds water.
We sit there, and nothing happens. "Did you put in the silver
sulfate?" Jake says.
"No," I worry, "I put in the potassium
nitrate and sodium sulfate..." i
glance up at the white board. "Oh, sorry I'll add the
silver sulfate." I do, and a cloud of presipitation forms.
"Cool." Jake says. He holds up his hand, for a high-five,
which I happily slap.
Mr. Kewer comes over to our table, and nods of approval.
"Nice job, you two." He says. Thank God it didn't
explode. Jake and I finish the woksheet, and dump our expeirement
in the sink. "Now, before you all go, I have one
announcement," Mr. Kewer says, "after break, the spring
science fair will be coming up. You and your partner will be
working together, so do some brainstorming over break. Class
dismissed."
When lunch comes, I have to refrain myself from eating my
veggie-burger whole. I sit alone, as usual, eat in the
smallest bites that I can contain myself to. That's when I see
Jake, and seeing him makes me smile.
I wonder why.
