Boys
Fall
In Love
Too.
Chapter
28
"Your sister is
gone," Mrs. Capp said, holding onto the
counter as if it was the key to life. Colton looked
at her, he couldn't quite process the exact
meaning. He took a hopeful guess, "You mean,
she ran away from McCay Academy?" It would be
better than the other option. "No!"
screamed his mother, "SHE'S DEAD
COLTON." The words hit Colton like a bag of
rocks. First Crissa, now Scarlett, both of his
sisters, gone forever. "How-how'd she, you
know..die?" he asked, stepping closer to his
mother. She was unable to answer, collapsing on the
ground in a heap, sobbing so loudly he was sure the
neighbors would hear. "Leave me alone, Colton.
Please," said her muffled voice. "But,
Mom," he said. "Leave me alone!" she
said louder and went to the bathroom, slamming the
door. Colton didn't remember her reacting so
strongly to Crissa's death. She of course had
broken down in tears, but she hadn't gotten
angry at him when he just wanted to comfort her.
Well. This is the second child she's
lost, he thought. He walked upstairs and
stopped at Scarlett's room, which was pretty
bare now, thanks to all of her stuff shipped off to
boarding school. He simply shook his head, tears
brimming his eyes and shuffled into his room and
closed his door softly. He pulled out his phone to
text Freddy and Luke, explaining that Scarlett had
passed away. As soon as it said message sent he
threw his phone down on the floor, not caring if
it'd break. He bent over and buried his head in
his knees when he heard his ringtone go off. He
bent over and picked it up, Luke was calling.
"Hello?" he answered, trying to make it
seem like he hadn't been crying, he didn't
want his friends to ever know he cried. How manly
would that be? "I'm sorry to hear about
Scarlett, man. How'd it happen?" Luke
asked. "That's the thing. I have no clue.
I asked my mom and she f*cking freaked out at me
and went and locked herself in the bathroom,"
Colton explained, staring at his red comforter.
"My phone's about to die but let me know
what happened. Think it was something with
drugs?" Luke asked. "She was supposed to
be detoxed of them but gurauntee someone at McCay
Academy was on drugs and she found out and they
shared. I don't know. She wasn't even at
McCay very long! But I'll let you go. I'll
text you later dude," Colton said.
"Bye," he heard Luke say and click off.
Colton pressed the end call button and set his bed
on his bedside table. He stood up and went
downstairs to the hall closet. His family always
called it the "growing closet" because on
the inside of the door were three charts. One for
him, one for Crissa, and one for Scarlett. Every
year at their birthdays they'd get measured to
see how much they'd grown in the past year and
mark it on the chart. Next to each mark was that
year's school picture. He stared for a moment
at Crissa's and Scarlett's, smiling as he
looked at their school pictures from each year.
Crissa had always had a genuine smile and looked
perfect. As he studied Scarlett's one from this
year he noticed that although she was
smiling, she looked slightly dazed and
confused, like she didn't know what was going
on. Colton closed the closet door and went
downstairs to the living room to flip through
family albums, he wanted to look at all the good
memories and try to get rid of the saddness he was
feeling for a while.
After about an hour of looking through books
Colton's mom walked into the living room, her
eyes red and her nose raw. "Hi honey, whatcha
doing?" she asked, sitting down next to him.
"Just looking at pictures," he said. She
looked down at the album in front of him, he was on
a page from Easter a few years back. "These
are pretty good memories," she said, pulling a
Kleenex from the tissue box on the coffee table and
dabbing her eyes. "They are," Colton
said, staring at the pictures. "So I guess you
want to know what happened, huh?" his mother
asked. "Yeah," was all he said.
Author Talk: Sad chapter):
Any guesses how Scarlett died? Do you think it was
drugs...or something else? Hmm..
So I had someone tell me that this story is stupid
because the title is Boys Fall In Love Too and the
story doesn't revolve around love. They deleted
their comment, but not before I read it. Sorry but
just because he's in love doesn't mean
other things in his life aren't going to
happen. I wanted more plot points then just love,
alright? And, one of the plot points is that
he's in love with Bridget, so don't tell me
there isn't any love in this
story.
