Chapter 6

 part three
(the things in italics mean they are part of a memory or story)

Carter looked at me, “You’re probably wondering what this has to do with you getting here and everything, but trust me, it makes sense- I think…”
I smiled weakly and nodded, “Alright, I trust you.”
We made eye contact- major eye contact.
I glanced away shyly.
I could feel myself blushing, and I lightly put a hand to my cheek.
“C’mon! Keep going! What happened next!?” Rikki asked eagerly.
“Well, I stayed in the area for a while. You know, so I could make sure the two of them were put into a home together. And they were, Nicole ended up taking them.” He told us.
“Did you ever visit them after that?” I questioned.
“No, I couldn’t. I knew that Nicole would have to report it, or she’d lose her job, and that wouldn't have helped my sisters.” He answered.
I nodded solemnly in response.
Wow. I would never be able to live without my parents and my brother and sister.
My family! Where did they think I was now!?
“What about my family- what do they think happened to me?” I anxiously asked Carter and Rikki.
They exchanged glances, then Rikki answered,
“Let him explain everything, okay?”
Uh oh. What was that supposed to mean?
Whatever it meant, it couldn’t be good- or else they’d just tell me, right?
Instead of asking all of this, I simply answered with a nod.
“What time is it Rikki?” Carter asked.
She looked at a dark purple watch on her hand, “About nine in the morning- why?”
“I told Andrew I’d meet him at eleven.” Carter explained.
“Who’s Andrew?” I asked him.
I saw something flash in his eyes.
Was it anger? Or maybe sadness?
I couldn’t tell, it was gone just as quickly as it had appeared.
“Just another person you’ve met, but don’t remember.” Carter replied.
“About that,” Rikki said, “you never told me why she doesn’t remember anything.”
“It’s all part of the story, besides I promised Brielle I’d answer her questions. And you know how I feel about keeping promises.” He replied.
“Ugh. Whatever.” She said, obviously annoyed, “Are you going to continue your story or not? Because I have places to go and people to see.”
He rolled his eyes at her.
“Well you can go. The next thing that happened was I met you.”
“Thank God!” Rikki shouted, lifting her hands and her gaze towards the ceiling, as if she was worshiping a god.
I laughed at her dramatic reaction.
“Cut the crap, Rikki. You’re such a drama queen.” Carter said.
“Well your girlfriend seems to think it’s pretty funny.” She teased while pulling her boots on.
Carter gave me a fake angry look.
But I just shrugged my shoulders innocently and covered my mouth with one hand to keep myself from giggling.
Rikki went into the closet and pulled out a black jacket, “By the way,” she said looking at me, “you might want to get yourself some new clothes.”
I looked down at what I was wearing for the first time.
I was a mess, and I could feel myself blushing.
I heard Rikki laugh, and looked up to see her closing the door behind her.
“I think you look beautiful just like that.” Carter said sweetly as he came over to sit with me on the sleeping bags.
