Chapter
Twenty-Two
I woke up
the next morning to the sound of my phone ringing. I grabbed it
and answered it.
“Hello?” I said, groggily, looking at my alarm
clock. 7:09. In the morning. On a Sunday. What was wrong with
people these days?
“Hey, Jen.” I recognized Ben’s voice
immediately. “Oh – did I wake you up? Sorry. Can
you do me a favor?”
“What am I going to get out of it? “ I
teased.
“I’ll buy you Doritos,” he
said.
“Done,” I said, with a pause. I was surprised at
how well he already knew me. I wondered if Cody even knew about
my obsession with Doritos. “What do you need?” I
asked.
“My dad has this brunch thing at work, and he wants me to
go,” he said.
“Want to come study for our Chemistry test?” I
suggested, already knowing he was trying to find a way out of
the brunch. “I needed help with that
anyways.
“Can’t imagine why,” he said
sarcastically. “You know, it usually helps when you
actually pay attention in class.” I rolled my
eyes.
“I pay attention,” I objected.
“Yeah – to Cody.”
“You know, maybe I don’t need help with it after
all,” I said teasingly.
“Alright, alright, you pay attention,” he gave
in.
“That’s what I thought.”
“Whatever,” he laughed. “Here or
there?”
“There,” I replied, rolling out of bed.
“I’ll be over as soon as I’m
dressed.”
“Alright. See you later,” he said, and I hung up
the phone. I pulled on jeans and a sweatshirt and put my hair
in a ponytail. I put on a little eyeliner and mascara. After
telling my mom where I was going, I grabbed my backpack and
headed over to Ben’s.
“Hi, Jen,” Ben’s mom smiled at me when I
walked in. She looked like she was just getting ready to walk
out the door. “Ben’s in his room. You can just go
in,” she told me.
“Thanks,” I replied. “Have a good
time!” I said, as her and her husband headed for the
door.
“Thanks,” Ben’s dad says. “Don’t
have too much time studying!” I
laughed.
“Don’t worry, I don’t think that’ll be
a problem!” I said, walking into Ben’s
room.
“Oh, hey,” he said. “Are my parent’s
gone?”
“Yeah,” I replied. He stood and grabbed his car
keys.
“Let’s go get your
Doritos.”
