Luce's POV
I watched as she walked away then I turned and scanned the crowd for Hannah.
“Luce.” Someone whispered. I felt their breath on my neck. Chills plunged down my spine.
I spun around but no one was there. It was like I had imagined it… But I just had a weird feeling.
I backed up against a wall and tried to distract my thoughts.
That’s when I saw him.
The guy.
The creepy one from the dance.
Probably the same guy from the cemetery.
He stood about ten feet away, talking to someone I didn’t know.
What the hell was he doing in California?!
I was frozen, my back against the wall.
Fear and nervousness pulsed through me but that couldn’t even compare to the fear I felt when he turned around, as if sensing my stare, and locked eyes with me.
I didn’t blink, I couldn’t move.
I nearly jumped out of my skin when my phone started vibrating in my pocket.
I forced myself to tear my eyes away from him and I answered.
When I looked back up he was gone.
“Hello?” I said as soon as I put it to my ear.
“Hello Luce.” It was the voice from my voicemails.
“What do you want?” I said loudly. A few heads turned toward me. I ducked out of their view and into a bathroom. With shaking hands I locked the door.
“We almost had a confrontation tonight, you and I. But I changed my mind. I want to meet a little differently, and a little more alone.” My heart pounded.
“Please, just leave me alone!” I cried into the phone. Tears stung my eyes.
“I’m afraid I can’t do that. We have some unfinished business to attend to. But I will reveal one thing, just to keep you awake at night. Just to let you know I am always watching and that I will be until this is finished.”
My breath came out in hurried huffs as I gasped for air. I felt like I was suffocating.
“Your car accident that almost killed you? Remember that?”
“Yeah.” I croaked out, not really understanding.
“You’re welcome.”
The line went dead and I fell to my knees.
