Luce's POV
At lunch the girls I had met earlier, Hannah and Trish, invited me to sit with them.
The strawberry blonde was nowhere to be found.
“Did you hear about Kayla?” I heard Hannah whisper to Trish.
“No!” She raised her eye brows and leaned in to hear the story.
“Her mom’s in jail!”
“No. Way.” Trish’s jaw dropped.
“Wait, what are we talking about?” I interrupted feeling really out of the loop.
“Kayla’s mom was drunk driving last night.” Her eyes were wide and disapproving.
“Really?” I asked and avoided their eyes. Parents who drink and drive aren’t exactly a new thing for me. In that moment, all the memories of my dad came flooding back.
“I-I think I need some air.”
“Okay.” Trish said. "And Luce?”
I turned around. “Yeah?”
“There’s a party tonight, my house. You can come if you want.” She smiled.
“Okay, I’ll think about it.” I replied, then walked out.
There was a courtyard across from the cafeteria. No one was out there. The perfect place to be alone.
I pulled out my cell phone, dialed the number I knew by heart and held it anxiously to my ear.
"Hello?” Blake said.
“Hi.” I said trying to sound calm.
“Luce.” He breathed. “Babe, Everything okay?”
“Um… y-yeah.” I lied.
“What’s wrong?” He asked worriedly.
“I-I’m fine, really. I just miss you that’s all.” That was true, I missed him so much it hurt.
“I know, I miss you too.” He said sadly.
“What are you doing?” I asked.
“Homework. Mrs. Fike assigned a research paper.”
“Well I’ll let you get back to it.” I said. “I just needed to hear your voice.”
“Okay, I love you Luce.” Blake said sincerely.
“I love you too.” I whispered softly.
We hung up and then I nearly jumped out of my skin when I noticed someone sitting on the table in front of me.
"Um hi." I smiled.
“What are you doing here?” The strawberry blonde asked.
“I uh… what’s the big deal?” I asked, suddenly becoming defensive.
“I eat here. No one else.”
“Last time I checked it’s a free country.” I spat.
“Just leave okay?” She asked.
“Fine!” I gasped and turned to leave
