chapter two

Daniel kissed my cheek as we came to split hallways. “I’ll swing by the mall and spring you from your shopping trip tonight,” he said.

“Oh gosh you’re a lifesaver,” I laughed.
Daniel knew I wasn’t up for anything lately. Ever since Jack left for the army, I’d been kind of depressed. But I did think it was time to snap myself out of it. I turned away from Daniel on my way to my homeroom, when Jason fell into step beside me.

“You know I would have pegged you as the type of girl who would love to go shopping,” Jason said.

“You’re right. I do. Just not lately...” I let myself trail off. Jason seemed to take the hint.

“So who’s your next teacher?” he asked
me, abruptly changing the subject.
“I have Mrs. Benn. You?”

“Same. At least I’ll know one person,” he winked, and slipped through the door.
I laughed and rolled my eyes, then went to take my usual seat beside Erika.

“So? Are you sure you’re up for shopping tonight Ali? I can’t believe Emily suggested something, she knows about your brother.”

“It’s fine Erika. It’s time to snap myself out of this; a little fun will do me wonders.”

“Alright everyone, I’ll read my partner list for the Odyssey. The name I read off with yours will be your collaboration partner, as well as your partner for any and all projects associated with this epic poem. No complaints about switching, my decisions are final” said Mrs. Benn.

Erika shot me a look and crossed her fingers. I laughed. There was no way Mrs. Benn would put us together for a partner project, she knew we wouldn’t get anything done. Mrs. Benn read off my and Jason’s name together, and he gave me a smile. I smiled back. I was starting to like Jason.
