    I WON'T somehow become perfect.

    *Daniel’s POV*
“Annabelle what were you doing? We were just supposed to make them jealous, can’t you do anything right?” I snapped.
“Oh come on Daniel, I didn’t think she’d actually kiss him. Why do you care anyway? Now you know they’re legitimately dating, isn’t that why you hired me?” asked Annabelle.
“I hired you to pretend to be my girlfriend so that I could make Ali jealous. I didn’t hire you to make Ali kiss her apparently not fake new boyfriend!”
“Well isn’t that just too bad. But oh well. You know what they say about karma,” she said as she turned away from me and walked down the hallway.
Shaking my head, I turned around and walked down a hallway in another direction. Rounding a corner, I saw Jason and Ali kissing in the middle of one of the empty hallways. My stomach clenched along with my fist. Jason said something to Ali, and then turned and walked down towards where I was watching. I ducked into the door of one of the classrooms and waited until Jason was right in front of me. Jumping out, I punched him hard in the jaw.
Jason was knocked back a few steps, but he regained his balance and punched me in the stomach. I winced and returned with another punch to the side of his head.
“Daniel, you don’t want to keep fighting me,” he said.
“Oh believe me, I do.” I said as I plowed into him in an attempt to knock him off balance.
The next thing I knew I was on the ground, and Jason was towering over me. The pain was blurring the edges of my vision.
“I told you that you didn’t want to fight me,” he said, and then the world faded to black.

    chapter fourteen ------------------------------------------------
When I couldn’t bear Jason’s stare anymore, I turned away from his face to find both Daniel and Annabelle gone. My friends whistled at us in the mocking way friends do, not understanding that the previous night I had refused to kiss Jason.
“We, um, need to get to class,” I said, taking Jason’s hand and pulling him towards the hallway. We walked until we were alone.
“Now, I’d be a fool not to have enjoyed that, but I must admit I’m a little ticked off. What, so you won’t kiss me unless someone’s watching? Did you think if you didn’t agree to be my girlfriend I’d stop your little show?”
“No, no Jason it wasn’t like that!” I insisted. He raised one eyebrow in reply.
“I didn’t kiss you last night because I don’t do that. I still can’t believe I just pulled that back there. That’s not who I am, I-I just lost control and-“
“So it’s difficult for you to want to kiss me, is that it? Forgive me if I’m being unfair, but I feel insulted,” he cut me off.
“Jason,” I said, taking a step closer and putting my hand on his chest. “I want to kiss you. Believe me. But I shouldn’t have. Our first kiss shouldn’t have been in front of my ex-boyfriend and a bunch of other random people. I’m so sorry,”
Jason looked over my head and let out a breath considering how to respond. He took a step towards me and put his hand behind my head. Ever so gently, he tilted my head up so that my lips met his. He kept one hand under my chin, and the other he put on the small of my back to pull me closer. The kiss was much less demanding, and was instead sweet. He pulled away while keeping our foreheads pressed together.
“I suppose we could always pretend that was our first kiss,” he suggested.

    chapter thirteen ------------------------------------------------
“Erika… I’m legitimately dating him now,” I assured her for the hundredth time.
    “I love it!” she squealed.
“You guys are so cute,” assured Jessica.
“What I’m mad about is the fact that you started having feelings with this guy and didn’t tell your best friend!” said Erika.
“I didn’t even know I had feelings for the guy. I mean, I did, but I was denying them I guess. Does that make sense?” I asked my group of friends.
“Nope, good thing when you’re in love it doesn’t have to!” said Emily. I rolled my eyes.
“Speak of the devil,” said Erika as Jason came and sat down next to me. He grabbed my hand.
“Well Erika, I didn’t know you were so fond of me,” he spoke.
“Ha ha prince charming. Ooh. And speaking of the prince, looks like the toad is heading this way,” she said. Sure enough, Daniel was walking over to our lunch table holding hands with redheaded girl named Annabelle.
“Well, if it isn’t the fake couple,” Daniel mocked, gesturing in our direction. “As if I care anymore,” he said, while pulling Annabelle into a deep kiss. I know I shouldn’t care, but I found myself blinking back tears, unable to turn away. Annabelle broke the kiss and shot me daggered eyes partnered with an innocent smile. Your turn, she mouthed.
“Ali and I are a couple now Daniel, now get lost before I make you get lost,” he spat.
“Please Jason. I bet she won’t even kiss you,”
Letting my anger get the better of me, I pulled Jason’s hand to bring him closer, and before either of us could react I pressed myself up against him, embracing him into a deep kiss. I felt his fingers wind into my hair, and my lips part under his. Jason pulled away first, so that I could see the thinly veiled hurt in his eyes.

“No you don’t,” I said shaking my head. “Everyone gets tired of me eventually.”
“Not me,” he insisted while walking closer.
“Do you really mean that?” I asked. I shook my head to clear it. My breath was getting caught in my throat and I didn’t know what to do. This wasn’t like me. I didn’t fall for guys so easily.
“Yes!” he insisted laughing. He clasped his hand around mine, and pulled me up against him. He tilted his head and began moving even closer.
My hand shot out, catching him by the chest. “I-I don’t do that,” I stammered, taking a step back. I realized I must have sounded stupid, but I stood my ground.
He put his hands up in a surrendering gesture. “That’s okay, as long as you give me the chance to convince you otherwise,” he said, again clasping my hand. He leaned in and pressed his soft lips up against my cheek.
“All I’m asking you for is one chance Ali. If it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work. Isn’t that what high school relationships are about? Taking chances? Trying something new?” he asked.
    “I wouldn’t know would I?”
“Come on Ali. I know you like me. I can see it by the way you blush when I get closer,” he started, while inching towards me. I glanced down, but I couldn’t keep the blush from escaping onto my cheeks. I looked up, and was met with an adorable and cocky half smile.
“Will you go out with me?” he asked again.
I nodded my head and smiled. He laughed and closed the last few inches between us, embracing me in a hug that picked me off of my feet. He set me down, but he didn’t let go. I nestled my head into his shoulder where it fit perfectly, and with his strong arms around me I was met with the sense of security and being wanted that I had so dearly missed.

“Emma?” I called as I neared the door of Annabelle’s café. She was sitting in a booth holding hands with a boy. Looking closer I realized it was Ben. Emma was laughing. I grabbed Jason’s hand and pulled him inside with me.
“When did this happen?” I asked them.
“About five seconds after I ran out and he came after me,” said Emma. “Although from the looks of things I’m not the only one who is now dating my fake boyfriend?” she asked.
I glanced down to where I was still holding Jason’s hand. It had felt so comfortable I hadn’t remembered to let go.
“We’re not dating,” I said, dropping his hand.
“Well you don’t sound so happy about that,” she replied.
“You don’t even know what you’re talking about Emma,” I snapped.
“I came after you to see if you were okay, but it seems to me like your fine.” I stormed out of the café and began walking down the street. I didn’t know where to go. I had no cell phone and no car with me because Jason drove me here.
“Ali, slow down!” spoke Jason grasping my arm. I was so scared, I let my feet slip out from under me and landed hard on my butt on the pavement.
“Oh my gosh I’m so sorry,” Jason exclaimed, offering a hand to help me up. I swatted it aside to get up by myself. “Ali I didn’t mean to knock you down I swear-“
“I don’t care that I fell down! What I care about is that everyone can seem to find love. My cheating boyfriend will probably have a new girlfriend by tomorrow, the majority of my friends have boyfriends, and the girlfriend my boyfriend cheated on me with had a boyfriend. Daniel was my first boyfriend ever Jason. I’m seventeen! That’s not normal! I should have been heartbroken more times than I can count by now. I should know how to deal with this by now but I can’t. Daniel was the first boy to ever find me attractive or to tolerate me long enough to date me. Do you have any idea how that feels?” I spat.
“Ali, please. Just listen to me-“ he started.
“No Jason. You probably had girlfriends to spare at your old school. You don’t get how this feels. No one does. I’m alone. No one ever wants me, and that’s just something I have to live with.”
“Did you ever think if you gave people a chance and let someone in for once you’d have a boyfriend Ali?” He strode foreword and grabbed my hand. He put it up against his chest. “Feel that beat Ali? I haven’t known you long, but ask and it's yours.”
    I couldn’t breathe.

“You’re going to leave Ali alone now Daniel. You’re going to stop falsely apologizing, and you’re never going to ask for her back again. Got it?” asked Jason.
“Please, I’ve got three friends with me. If you want to threaten me, I’m telling you now you stand no chance” he said.
“Really? Harry, John, Michael, would you really fight me with Daniel after you’d just seen what he’s done?” asked Jason. He smiled at their chorus of no’s.
“Bye Daniel,” I said as Jason and I walked out of the ice cream shop. Leaving that place, I couldn’t stop the tears as they flowed from my eyes.
As soon as we rounded the corner from the ice cream shop, Jason embraced me a huge hug. He pulled me tight up against him,and I laid my head on his chest. I felt his biceps flex as he picked me up. Laughing, I swatted his chest.
“Put me down!” I said looking into his face.
“Not until you smile again,” he said. I gave him a very sarcastic smile.
“Fake, but I’ll let you go,” he said setting my feet back on the ground. I wiped the few smears my tears left in my mascara off my face.
“We need to find Emma. As much as I hate her for being the one Daniel cheated on me with, she didn’t do anything wrong.”
“Already on it,” said Jason flipping out his cell phone and dialing Ben’s number.
I smiled. It was getting harder and harder to think of Jason as my fake boyfriend. He was always there, always watching out for me. I liked it.

    “Ready Ben?” asked Jason.
“Definitely. This will be fun,” he answered.
Emma and Ben clasped hands. Jason had convinced to pretend to be the guy Emma was “cheating” on Daniel with. Daniel was currently inside Maggie Moo’s Ice Cream Shop with some friends. Jason and I walked through the doors and sat down at a table. Daniel gave us a look, but ignored us for the most part. Emma and Ben walked through the door holding hands and making sure they didn’t look in Daniel’s direction. They sat down at a table.
“I’ll go buy us ice cream,” said Ben. He leaned down and gave Emma a kiss on the cheek.
“Emma!” asked Daniel stalking up to her table.
“Daniel! I uh, Ben is just my cousin!” she said. I had to admit, she was good at feigning innocence.
“You were cheating on me? That’s it we’re done,” he said.
“But please, Daniel it was just a mistake!” said Emma exactly copying what Daniel said to me.
“It doesn’t matter, you’re nothing but trash,” he spat.
I got up and walked to the table. Emma and I locked eyes and both started laughing.
“Now Daniel, that sounds quite a lot like my response when you said the exact thing to me,” I told him, watching realization flash across his face.
“Really? Telling Emma I was a jealous ex? And then asking for me back? If I’d have gone back out with me, you wouldn’t even have broken things off with your other girlfriend!” I exclaimed.
“And you called me trash,” said Emma. “You are nothing but a player. You played me, and I was fool enough to trust you. I defended you when Ali confronted me Daniel. Do you even care?” Tears began to brim in her eyes when he didn’t answer.
“I thought so.” She said. She turned and ran out of the ice cream shop. Ben went after her, and Jason came beside me and put his arm protectively over my shoulder.

“This is crazy Ali! A fake boyfriend?” Erika.
“Shh! Not so loud please!” I said.
    “I love it,” said Emily.
“It wasn’t my idea,” I admitted.
“Jason came up with this?” asked Erika.
“Yep, so… topic change?” I asked as we walked into a store at the Miami outdoor mall’s plaza.
    “Or not,” said Emily pointing.
In the corner of the boutique, Emma was trying on a bright pink dress that made her blond hair pop. Just looking at the girl Daniel cheated on me with had my hands clenching into fists. Listening, we heard the sales lady tell her that her boyfriend would love the dress on her.
“Hey Emma, already got a new boy too?” I asked her.
“No. But get away from me. Daniel told me all about how you are just his jealous ex-girlfriend. He told me that you were trying to make me think he was cheating on me. I know he would never do that. Daniel is the best boyfriend ever, and you’re just jealous because he dumped you. I’m celebrating my three month anniversary today with him. Get over it,” she spat.
Erika stepped up like she was going to slap Emma, but I put my hand on her shoulder.
“Emma, I’m telling you this because I take pity on the stupid. If I hadn’t caught Daniel and you at the mall, it would have been our year anniversary next week. I was just as blindsided by him as you were” I snapped. I could tell she still didn’t believe me.
“Need proof? Check the comments on the picture I took of the two of you,” I said while thrusting my phone at her. She took it hesitantly, but her face started drop as she began to read all of the comments about how sad It was me and Daniel broke up.
“This is all real. He lied to me. How could I have been so stupid?” she asked me. All of my friends shared a look.
“You said it was your four month anniversary right? That means he’s been lying to me for a long time,” I said.
    “So what now?” she asked.
“How about we both go to that anniversary date, and give Daniel a taste of his own medicine?” I suggested.
“How could I cheat on him?” she asked me.
“I’m sure we could find someone willing to play the part,” I answered.

“Ready?” whispered Jason in my ear.
    “Showtime,” I answered.
Jason and I clasped hands, and walked into the cafeteria. We were met with the irrevocable stares that come with rebounding so soon. Whispers arose and heads turned. I felt bad for Jason. I’d lived in Miami for a while, but he’s new. People don’t know him that well.

I shook out my freshly curled hair and applied an extra coat of my favorite lip gloss. Daniel was in my first hour, and intended to make it fully clear how over him I was- even if I really wasn’t. I walked through the door of our Biology class in my three inch heeled black strappy sandals (that made my legs look great) and walked up to Erika.
“Look at you,” she said approvingly.
“Well, considering we’re both now happily single, care to join me in a round of shameless flirting?” I offered.
    “Wouldn’t miss it.”
We walked up to Daniel’s group of friends to start a conversation before he got here. I wanted him to walk in and have to awkwardly approach just so I could laugh on the inside.
“Wait, there is no way you could lift that much. How big are your biceps?” squealed Erika. She was overdoing it a tad, but it made for a convincing show.
“Why don’t you find out?” said Cameron flexing his arm. Erika and I both felt his rock hard bicep. I had to admit, it definitely wasn’t a burden to have to flirt with Cameron. He was definitely attractive.
“Nice,” I said taking my hand away. “You really must work out tons.”
“Really Ali? I’d thought you’d be above this,” commented Daniel from behind me. I composed my face and blinked back the tears that sprung up from hearing his voice before turning around.
Flashing him the fakest smile I’d ever have to wear, I replied, “Above what? So just because you cheated on me I’m not allowed to talk to people you talk to? Sounds like you’re the one who should be above this. But it doesn’t really matter does it? You stopped being able to tell me who to talk to a long time ago. Even while we were dating I never let you boss me around. Maybe that’s why you did what you did, isn’t it?”
“Ali I’ve told you it’s not like that. You didn’t do anything wrong, and I was just being stupid. I shouldn’t have-“
“But you did Daniel. You cheated. And now you’re coming in here, acting like we’re a couple because you caught me talking to an attractive guy.” Daniel opened his mouth to speak, but I cut him off continuing, “take a good look at what you’re missing Daniel, because I sure won’t be missing you.”
A chorus of ooh’s emitted from the students in the classroom watching this scene unfold. With one last plastic smile over my shoulder, Erika and I walked back to our seats.

“So this is home,” I said, tossing my bags on the counter.
“Home? More like mansion,” said Jason. I lived in a ten bedroom four floor house, so it was pretty big.
“Both my parents are Miami lawyers, we aren’t exactly middle class,” I said.
“So, with what happened at the mall-“
“Please,” I cut him off, “can we talk about something else? Anything else?”
“Uh sure… what did you buy?” he asked. I could tell he wasn’t the best conversationalist.
“A blue sundress that I was going to wear tomorrow. I bought it because he loved me in blue, but it doesn’t matter. I’m returning it.”
“You should wear it tomorrow anyway. Show him what he’s missing,” said Jason.
“You mean make him jealous and flirt with other guys?” I asked.
“Yes, well um… you could also…” he trailed off.
“I could also what?” I asked him.
“Alright, I’m not trying to come one to you an hour after your boyfriend cheated on you-“
“Way to be blunt,” I cut in.
“But,” he continued, “if you’d want to, I could pretend to be your boyfriend tomorrow, or at least flirt with you a lot. It might make him jealous enough to apologize again.”
“I don’t want him to apologize, I want him to realize what he’s done. But besides, how do I know you could even pull pretending to like me off? You were his friend remember?”
Jason walked towards me and put his hand on my shoulder. He trailed it down my arm and took my hand.
“Look Ali, you are the most beautiful person in the world,” he said. "You can do anything."
"Jason, I just got out of a relationghsip i can't get into another-" I snapped to my senses.
“Wait.” I said hitting his chest with my arm. Jason doubled over laughing.
“Jerk,” I said laughing. I rolled my eyes.
“I told you I was a good actor,” he said between chuckles. “Seriously though, we can do this if you want to.”
    “I’m in.”
