Unforgettable
CHAPTER 19
-------------------
"Lauren,
are you crazy? Kendall doesn't even have a REASON to do
something like that! No, it had to have been Emma," I said
defiantly.
Lauren touched my arm lightly. "Listen, Mia. I've known
Emma since the fourth grade. I know her; I know what she is and
isn't capable of. KIDNAPPING HER EX-BOYFRIEND is not
something she'd do."
"Well how do you know that!? You never know how far someone
can go till they're pushed to their edge!"
"True, but Emma..she just wouldn't. Trust me. Kendall,
on the other hand, is the biggest attention-seeker ever. She did
this so the attention wouldn't be directly on her, but boy,
there's attention on the issue. And did you see how she
acted? SO guilty. We just need proof," Lauren said.
"PROOF? How are we supposed to get PROOF?" I
screeched.
"Well, for one, we can ask neighbors if they saw
anything."
"They would have reported suspicions to the police
already," I said.
"Ugh," Lauren said. "Everything is leading
nowhere. What are we even supposed to do? We can't solve this
on our own."
"We can try and help the police?" I asked.
"No. They don't want to give us the time of
day."
"Well, at least we have two main suspects: Emma and Kendall.
Maybe that'd help them," I said.
"Okay, it's worth a shot," Lauren agreed.
"Great. I know exactly what to do."
~
Lauren and I were standing in my kitchen on Sunday afternoon,
with my phone on speaker.
"Hi, Detective Pernell?" I asked. He had given me his
direct office number.
"Hello. May I ask, with whom am I speaking?"
"It's Mia Hartley. I have some information about
Braydon's case."
My lip quivered. I still couldn't believe he was gone. For
all we know, Kendall or Emma or someone else could have KILLED
him.
"Well please, go ahead," he urged.
"My friend Lauren Matthews and I have been thinking about
it, and the main suspects seem to be Emma Cerrall and Kendall
Mahoney. Emma had broken up with Braydon somewhat recently before
the party and night of the kidnapping, so she may have had
motives." I paused.
Lauren was whispering that I should talk more about Kendall, but
I ignored her.
"Well, we can't go based off that, Mia."
"Will you please just look into it?" I pleaded.
"Of course. Thank you very much. We'll
investigate."
After the call, Lauren asked,
"Why didn't you talk more about Kendall?"
"I didn't know what to say," I mumbled.
She could tell I was sad.
"It's alright. They'll solve it, girl! Keep your
chin up! I have to go home now; do my homework and stuff.
I'll see you tomorrow at school. Don't talk to Kendall on
the bus, just observe her."
"Got it. See ya," I said, as I showed Lauren out the
door.
~
That night, I was flopped on my bed.
Tears were falling softly down my cheeks.
What was going on? Why had nothing happened yet?
Lauren and I were doing the best we could do, but we weren't
cut out for this. It wasn't our job, yet I still felt
responsibility for Braydon. I was worried, and I still didn't
know what to do with myself. All I could do was hope and pray for
it to work out.
Later that night, my wishes were answered. The landline rang and
my mother said it was for me. I picked up.
"Hello?"
"Hello, Mia. It's Detective Pernell. Sorry to call so
late, but-"
"You found Braydon?"
"Not that good of news, no. I apologize. But what I did have
to tell you is, my team investigated the case more this evening,
including Emma Cerrall and Kendall Mahoney. And we have a job for
you."
