CHAPTER SEVENTEEN ~  HOME

Part Three
Alex

Her mom nodded suspiciously. "We're going back today," Kate went on, "since Alex has been gone for too long. Plus, I have jet lag, and I really need to go home." Her mother sighed, "But I just got you back. I was hoping you would at least stay a while, if not to have your babies here." Kate's eyes widened, and so did mine. "No, Mom, I'd rather have them in Sanatoria. That's where they belong." She added softly under her breath so her mom wouldn't hear, "That's where I belong, too." I put my arm around her and squeezed her bony shoulders. "Well, I'll go make some breakfast. I'll call you in when it's ready," Mrs. McCartney told us, heading back into the house. "Did you lose weight?" I asked her when we were alone. "Yeah. Before I knew I was pregnant I kind of went a little crazy. I didn't eat for almost a week. I looked awful." Again, I felt terrible for doing this to her. "Impressive story," I laughed, changing the subject before I started to beat myself up over it. "Yeah, I know. That was some great on-the-spot thinking, I have to say," she agreed. "You know what? I'm going to call and get our plane tickets home. Then we can talk some more, okay?" She nodded and went into the house after giving me a quick kiss. I turned around and put my head in my hands. I walked over to Nate's sleeping body. "Nate," I groaned, kicking him in his side, "Nate." There was no response. "Nate!" I called, kicking him harder. He was so annoying, he couldn't even wake up without irritating me. "Nathaniel!" I yelled and got him square in the head. "What the-" Nate cried, startled awake. "Oh my God, ow," he complained. "Sorry," I shrugged. "You wouldn't wake up. It's your fault." Nate rolled his eyes and then closed them again. "Yeah, whatever. Go away." I pulled him up. "Nate. Come on, seriously." He opened his eyes and looked at me for the first time since he woke up. "Whoa, dude, what happened? You look torn up. Kate oka-" He looked around. "Where are we?" he asked, noticing for the first time that he wasn't in his bedroom. "She didn't eat for a week." I didn't say it as a question. "Yeah. The first week. It was bad," Nate nodded, yawning. "And the nightmares. All she did was cry, but sometimes she would scream. I thought I told you this when you came home. Guess you weren't listening?" He rolled his eyes. "No, I guess not," I choked out. "I was kind of freaking out that she was gone, you know?" Nate nodded sleepily. "Mhm. I'm tired. It shouldn't be daytime right now, it should be night. That's why I hate traveling, it's confusing. Can we go home? Please?" Nate moaned. "Yeah, I just have to buy the tickets. We aren't going to do it like last time," I said, and we both laughed. I called the airport and bought three tickets home for two this afternoon. Since it was eleven when we woke up, we only had three hours left in America before we saw Sanatoria again. I couldn't wait. I was glad everything was back to normal, or so I thought.
What do you think? (: More tomorrow!
