homerun
part #119
(*this is about 7 years in the future. the same time
of the year, just 7 years ahead. devon is 24 and pat
is turning 25*)
i opened my
eyes to the bright sunlight streaming in from the window. i
rolled onto my side to feel a pair of eyes staring at me. i
cracked my eyes open to see the blue eyes of my only true
love.
"good morning sunshine." pat said, smiling.
"good morning." i said, pulling my arms around his
neck, and stretching at the same time. he leaned over and
kissed me. i toyed with the ring around my left finger, and
he pulled away.
"happy birthday." i said, smiling.
"thanks. even better, i don't have to practice
today." he said.
"good, so you can help me."
"of course."
"no, i'm just kidding. it's your birthday, you
shouldn't have to." i smiled, then heard the wail from the
machine on my nightstand.
"good morning too." i said, as i rolled over and walked
into the hallway. he jumped up and followed me.
"you get jake, i'll get maddie." i said, and turned
left into the all pink room. maddie was pat's and my
daughter. she was about a year and a half old. jake
was her older brother. he was almost 4. a couple of
years ago, when pat and i were in college, pat played football
for USC. he came home and visited a lot, and i went up to
visit. we mised each other terribly. one night we
were just playing around, and he proposed to me!
shortly 6 months after, that summer, we got
married, on july 24th. we decided to
wait until we both had jobs to go on a real
honeymoon. just as the new school year started, i
conceived jake. i never regretted having him so
young, though. i'd always knew i wanted to be with
pat, it just happened to speed up a little bit. being
pregnant, i transferred to USC (who gladly took me, thanks to my
amazing SAT scores) i had jake and was able to finish
school with a nursing degree, thanks very much to both of our
support from our families. delaney and erin were too happy
to have a little niece. danny took on the role of an uncle
smoothly, and mrs. lickham, who didn't work, she took care of him
for us. pat signed with the chargers, so we got to stay in
sunny california. pat bought us a house with the deal he
signed. 2 years after we had jake, we had maddie, so they
were somewhat similar in age. her bright blonde hair and
blue eyes were staring at me when i walked into the room.
"hey maddsie!" i said, and she giggled. i picked
her up and kissed her cheek. she giggled again, and then
was staring at the door as she heard pat walk around with jake in
his arms. jake had pat's blue eyes too, but with my dark
brown hair.
"mommy!" he exclaimed, and pat put him down, and he ran
to my leg.
"morning buddy!" i said, and hugged him.
"mommy! daddy doesn't have practice today, we can play all
day long!"
"yea, buddy, you do! let's go get you and your sister
some breakfast!" i said, and we walked downstairs to
eat. i sat maddie down in her chair, and pat put jake in
his booster seat. i walked over to take my medicine, and i
gave pat his. one thing that i had nightmares over when i
was pregnant with jake, would they have the disease that i
had? i wouldn't wish it on my best friend, or my worst
enemy. i had to go off the medicine when i was pregnant,
and pat would never leave my side when i was tired, just in
case. i didn't have a seizure, reluctantly. and as
soon as they were born, i was put right back on it. the
doctor said when they were of age, he would test their blood for
the genes. i'd cried over if they would have it, and it
scared me. pat knew this, and he would try to comfort me,
but we had to face facts, we were both carriers of the
disease.
"mommy, can i have frosted flakes?" jake asked.
"sure sweetie!" i said, as i put some cereal dry
cheerios into a bowl and a bottle of milk for maddie. i got
jake his frosted flakes, and pat poured him and i some
cereal. we sat down and ate breakfast together. i was
expecting blake over with chris, and anthony and alyssa to come
over later today. we'd surprisingly all made it through
college together. chris and blake had a rough spot, around
our sophomore year. they didn't come to our wedding
together, but they made up after. alyssa and anthony had
plans to get married in the spring.
"jake, do you know what today is?" i asked him.
"christmas?!" he asked, excitedly.
"noo, it's daddy's birthday." i smiled.
"oh. then do we get cake?"
"noo." pat started.
"later." i promised. "aunt erin and uncle
danny are coming over tonight. and so are uncle chris and
anthony, and aunt blake and alyssa."
"don't forget uncle ray, rockne, and johnny." pat
reminded him. he smiled, and i still saw the senior
quarterback i fell for. it wasn't that long ago, but he
still continued to amaze me. for his birthday, i got us
tickets to go to italy for 2 weeks. blake, alyssa,
delaney, and erin were going to all stay here, in our huge house,
to watch the kids. i didn't see the necessity in big
mansion, considering it was just the 4 of us. but pat
wanted one, and i really didn't mind it.
"yaay! uncle rocckiieee!" jake shouted.
maddie smiled. rockne was jakes favorite.
johnny had met a girl at UCLA that he was crazy about. she
was really nice, and her name was megan. rockne was dating,
but he'd recently met a girl named katie. they were perfect
for each other, but rockne wanted to take it slow. ray had been
dating, but he hadn't found anyone he was interested in.
jake screamed, disrupting me from my thoughts, and i decided we
had to start the day.
