Endless Summer
Chapter 3
Unsurprisingly, the flight to Montauk was horrible. I absentmindedly flipped through the glossy pages of Teen Vogue while my father droned endlessly on his Blackberry about his new book. I swear, he gives that thing more attention than he gives me. As we soared above rolling fields of grain and deep blue oceans, a startling new emotion washed over me. Insignificance. For some reason, this terrified me. I dozed off for the remainder of the flight and was awoken by the plane landing smoothly on the runway of Montauk Airport. As we drove to our new beachfront abode, I slumped against the windows of our rental car and took deep breaths. After 5 minutes that felt more like an hour, we arrived at the house. I inhaled, applied lip gloss for good luck, and stepped out of the rental Lexus. My five-inch-heels promptly sunk into sand, sending me splawling on my face. I felt lower than low as I looked up, spitting sand out of my mouth. The first thing I saw was a crashing, dark ocean. The second? A totally hot guy, dressed in swim trunks and holding a surfboard, walking towards me. Oh God. I stood up, smoothed my floral sundress, and finger-combed my hair. Maybe something good could come out of this summer.
Hot guy approached me, his golden blonde hair shining in the sun. I was in a trance. He was much better than Mark.
"Hey there. I'm Jack. You're the new girl?"
"Yes," I stammered. When had I become nervous around boys? "I'm Caroline."
"Cool. I'll be your neighbor."
"Great. Look forward to seeing you around."
I turned around, walking back towards the car. Yes, this could be a good summer. As long as Jack bas by my side.
