    All My Secrets 17
I hadn't smiled that much in a long time, and my smile quickly faded when I remembered only one of my daughters was safe-Natalie was still lying in a bed somewhere in the hospital, hurt, scared, and alone.
"I wanna see her." I said, hugging Kara close to my chest.
    "See who?" Mom asked earnestly.
"Natalie." I kissed the top of Kara's head as she wriggled in my arms.
Shannon and Mom exchanged a look. "Honey, maybe that isn't such a good idea-"
"She's all alone!" I cried, cutting her off. "I need to see her!"
"She's not alone," Mom said, moving to my side and patting my hair. "Dad's with her."
"It's not the same!" I gulped. "She needs her mom."
"And her mom needs rest." She argued.
Glaring, I hit the "Call a Nurse" button with my palm. Moments later, an older brunette woman came in. "Do you need something?" She asked pleasantly, smoothing my sheets. "Oh, what an adorable baby." She cooed, tickling Kara's chin.
Kara giggled, and her eyes sparkled. "When can I leave the bed?"
"It's a little soon. You should be able to walk around again in a few days. You're going to need some physical therapy and exercise before trying, though."
"Do you think-" I wiped away a tear with Kara's little finger. "Do you think you can bring her up here?"
    "Bring who?"
"Natalie McTill." Mom interrupted. "Room 326."
The nurse nodded. "I'll see what I can do."
"Thank you." She smiled back at me as she left, shutting the door behind her. I sighed.
"We going see Nattie?" Kara exclaimed.
"I hope so, sweetie." I said, burying my head in her golden halo. "I sure hope so."

I kept my eyes locked on my beautiful baby girl. "Everyone out." I said. I saw Adele and Paige exchange a look over my head.
"But, Char, we just got here." Danielle said, confused.
"I'd like to be alone with my family. Sorry, guys. Come back later. It was really great to see you!"
My friends exchanged glances and muttered as they headed toward the door. Shannon stayed seated, and Adele turned around. "How come she gets to stay?" Adele complained, gesturing towards Shannon.
"I'm her best friend." Shannon said simply.
"I'm her best friend." Adele corrected.
    "Really?" Shannon countered. "Because-"
"It's not a big deal!" I interrupted. "Adele, Shannon has nowhere else to go. She flew here from Texas, remember?" I still hadn't looked away from Kara.
"Sorry." Adele murmured. "Bye, Char. I'll be back later, k?" I nodded, and as soon as she left, I burst into tears. Mom, Dad, and Shannon immediately jumped up to comfort me.
Above Kara's left eye was a nasty looking bruise, and a small row of stitches adorned her right leg. 3 Hello Kitty bandaids were lined up on her shoulder. Hiccuping, I held out my arms. Mom gently placed Kara down on the bed with me.
She threw her arms around my neck, and I buried my face in her uninjured shoulder. "Oh, baby." I sobbed. "I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry, Kara."
She poked my back with her little finger. "Why you crying, Mommy?" She asked earnestly.
I looked up, and met her eyes. "I just love you so much." I explained, gazing into her big, sky blue, eyes.
A laugh burbled out of her mouth, revealing two small rows of pearly white teeth. "I love you too, Mommy!"

    "Where is she?"
Mom looked over. "Natalie's in ICU, honey, and Kara's at home with a babysitter."
    "Bring Kara here."
"Sure thing, sweetie." She got up to make a phone call, then returned shortly. "I'm going to pick her up now. Okay?"
"What about Nat?" I asked. I could hear my voice shaking, and I gulped back tears.
"She has to stay downstairs, Char, but as soon as you're okay you can go visit."
"But you and Dad and Grandma...you're all here. She's all alone. She can't be alone! She'll be scared!" My voice rose uncontrollably, and my heart raced.
"Calm down!" Dad said, jumping up. "Calm down," He repeated, calmer. "Don't panic Char. I'll go down right now. Do you want me to go see her?"
I nodded slightly, and a salty tear slid down my cheek and stopped on my upper lip. He bent down and kissed my forehead. "Tell her I love her," I called as Dad left the room, and he nodded.
I turned back to Shannon. "It's gonna be ok," She whispered, squeezing my hand.
    "You don't know that."
"Not for sure." She answered. "But the doctors are gonna do everything they can to save her." A knock at the door distracted me, cutting off my reply. "Looks like you have a visitor." Shannon said, hopping off the side of my bed and strutting to the door.
She pulled it open, and in came Adele, Darlene, Sarah, Danielle, Macy, Ian, Kyle, Grant, Bradley, and John. My entire lunch table. A few cheerleaders followed them in- Georgia, Emily, Marie, Katie, and Paige. They carried more flowers, balloons, cards, and presents than there were on the entire floor.
One at a time, they came forward with a hug, and when they had all greeted me, they stood there awkwardly. Adele perched herself on the side of my bed, next to Shannon.
"I was so worried about you!" Adele started, and the others pitched in. "We were so scared." "I love you Char!" "Everyone wants to know when you'll be better." "I don't know what would've happened if I lost you!" "You're my best friend!"
I exchanged a glance with Shannon. She smirked, and I bit my lip, holding back a smile. "Thanks, guys." I interrupted. "This is Shannon- my best friend, from Texas." Darlene gave her a tight-lipped smile, but Adele shook her hand and greeted her warmly.
I introduced them one by one, and we sat there chatting until the door pushed open again. "What is going on in here?" It was Mom's voice, and I could hear Kara squeal. My heart pounded again.
"Move!" I commanded everyone, so I could see her. And then, there she was.
Bouncy blonde curls, big sapphire eyes, slightly flushed forehead.
I had never been so happy to see her before in my life.

"....broken ribs, crushed skull..." My mom was saying. I couldn't talk. I couldn't breathe. She was alive. Thank God. She was alive. Mom broke off suddenly and touched me gently on the shoulder. "Char?" I looked at her, suddenly aware of the tears streaming down my face.
"Char," She whispered. "It's still touch and go. Whether she makes it or not, baby, I don't know." And then the waterworks started up again; tears stung my eyes and I tried to wipe them away. But with both hands pinned by my sides, I had to settle for blinking consistently, wiping away the drops with my long eyelashes.
"I know, Sweetie," She said, stroking my hair. Just then, the door creeped open and a petite figure stepped in hesitantly.
"Shannon!" I cried, recognizing her immediately. Her freckly face lit up, green eyes shining like emeralds. I'm sure I wore the same ecstatic expression.
"Char!" She said, rushing to my bedside. I saw her brush a tear out of her eye, and she squeezed my hand, handing a gorgeous bouquet of purple and pink flowers to my mom. I watched her swallow a lump in her throat, and I knew this was as hard for her as it was for my mom. After all, she was my best friend.
"Don't worry about me," I said lightly. "It's Natalie I'm worried about."
"I know, hon." She said, her smile dimming a notch. "Your mom told me everything. But she's strong." Shannon added, squeezing my fingers again. "And I know she can pull through. Ok?" She asked, leaning in close. "Just think positive."
"Easier said than done." I mumbled, and Shan bit her lip sympathetically. "You can do this. You both can." She whispered.
She had faith in me, and Natalie. They all did.
    Everyone except me.

I shot up, to the shock of my guests. "Charlene!" Dad cried as I blinked rapidly, trying to shake off the overwhelming rush. Mom and Grandma steadied me as I laid back down. I tried to get back up, but they held me down.
"What has gotten into you?" Mom exclaimed. "Char, don't hurt yourself!"
"Cause it could get so much worse than this." I said sarcastically. Mom looked hurt, and I bit my lip. "Sorry." I mumbled. I looked down, then back up and into Mom's eyes.
    "Where are they?"
For a minute, she was quiet. I tried to read her expression, but she had on her poker face. "Charlene..." She started quietly.
"God dammit, just tell me!" I screamed. Grandma stepped back, and I breathed heavily, scrunching my forehead. A wave of pain had passed through my body, and I made a mental note: no more sudden movements.
Mom and Dad exchanged a look, and I fell back, frustrated. Tears stung my eyes as I stared at the empty ceiling. I felt someone moving closer to me, and I glimpsed a purple fabric out of the corner out of my eye.
Mom tentatively placed a hand on my shoulder. "Sweetie, look at me." She whispered. I stayed perfectly still, and she sighed. Finally, she took my chin and gently turned my head towards her.
"Kara's okay." She whispered. A wave of relief washed through me, but it was quickly replaced with nausea. Kara. KaraKaraKara. Mom must've read the fear in my face, because she quickly started talking again.
"She just had a few bruises, luckily her car seat kept her safe." The words barely registered in my mind.
"Kara's okay." I repeated. She nodded, and took my hand.
"Honey-" She began. I shook my head, bringing on another bout of pain.
"And Natalie-" She continued. I couldn't talk. If I tried, I would throw up for sure.
    So instead, I listened.

When I woke up, I was in an unfamiliar room. The walls were pale blue, the windows masked by plastic white shades. The bed was slightly lumpy, and metal sides framed it. My whole body ached, and I groaned. Even blinking was painful.
"Char?" I recognized Mom's voice. She hurried over and stood at the bedside. I looked at her out of the corner of my eye. Her hand fluttered hesitantly over my bandaged arm, like she wanted to comfort me but was scared to hurt me.
"Mom?" My voice cracked, and my throat was dry. It hurt to speak, too.
Mom's face softened, and a tear glistened in the corner of my eye. "Honey," She cooed. "I was so worried."
I blinked, and tears stung my eyes. "What happened?"
"The car crashed, sweetie. Do you remember?"
"I think so." I tried to nod, but I couldn't move. Something was holding my head in place. I shifted my body slightly, so I could see more of the room. Mom was there, and Dad too. An older woman sat in the corner, and when I squinted my eyes, I realized it was my grandma.
"What happened to me?" I whispered, my voice wobbling. My throat was scratchy, like someone had dragged their nails across it.
Mom's voice was sympathetic. "Well, you had a concussion when you came in- 3 days ago-"
"Three days?" I interrupted her, momentarily forgetting my pain.
"Most of it you spent in surgery." She explained. "Then you needed time for the anesthesia to wear off." I nodded, encouraging her to go on. "You broke your leg, fractured your elbow, broke two ribs, and had part of the car frame stuck in your stomach..." She trailed off, and I noticed she was crying again.
"Don't worry, Mom." I tried to console her. "i'm okay now." I told her, forcing a smile.
"Oh, baby." She said, smoothing my hair. I winced, and she sprang back and pouted apologetically. "You're so brave." She continued. "I'm so glad you're okay."
Dad came over, then. "You'll get better soon." He told me. "I was so scared that I wouldn't get to see my little girl again." I gulped down a lump in my throat and blinked back tears.
Grandma walked over too, and they both started talking to me. I tried to listen, but something wasn't right. That's when it hit me. There were three of them in the room- Mom, Dad, Grandma.
    Just the three of them.

    Part 2
When we were done eating, I excused myself to go to the bathroom, peeking into the corridor on the way there. Nicolette and Paul were gone, but I still had my proof. And that was all I needed.
Two stalls were taken in the bathroom, and I popped into another. When I finished and came out, who was standing at the counter re-applying her makeup...but Nicolette.
I awkwardly approached the sink and rolled up my sleeves. She paid no attention to me as I turned on the cool water and rinsed my hands. I examined her in the mirror.
She was gorgeous. Fire red hair cascading over her shoulders and down her back, cherry-red full lips popping against her white teeth and slightly tanned skin. She had on gold eyeliner, accenting her emerald eyes. She wore a tight, black tank top over skintight denim jeans, ripped in all the right places. Her skinny legs disappeared into an extremely hot pair of knee high black leather boots. She wore minimal jewelry- a charm bracelet around her wrist and quarter-sized silver hoops.
I felt so plain and small next to her, in my dark wash jeans and green t-shirt.
As I turned off the faucet and tugged down a paper towel, Nicolette turned to me. "Don't you go to my school?"
    I paused. "Yeah."
She nodded. "That's what I thought." And that was it. She smacked her lips, tousled her hair, and walked out of the bathroom, leaving nothing but the swinging door.
I left moments later, and Sadie was waiting for me at the door. "Ready to go?" She asked, swinging her purse.
"Yup." And together we walked out to the parking lot where my moms black Toyota was waiting. We climbed into the car, and I tried not to be jealous as I watched Nicolette back out of the parking lot in a pristine white Mercedes.
Oh well. I thought. That's life.

Before I headed over to the daycare, I stopped at home to get the car. After the twenty minute walk, I climbed into the silver Acura. I immediately flicked on the windshield wiper and the radio, singing along to the familiar tune of S&M by Rihanna.
"Cause I may be bad, but I'm perfectly good at it..." I sang aloud as I spun the steering wheel. The road was slippery from the downpour that had started again, so I drove slow to the daycare.
Once there, I pulled into a parking space closest to the front door. I stepped out, smoothed down my frizzy hair, and pulled open the see-through door. A pink, blue, and yellow room greeted me with the overwhelming scent of apple juice and fresh cotton Febreze.
I waved it away and stepped into the room. Natalie and Kara sat at a miniature table in the corner with three dolls, having a tea party. I nodded hello to Elma, one of the owners. Phone tucked under her ear, she waved back as she gabbed away. "Hi girls!" I cooed as I approached the table.
Both girls spun around, and their faces lit up. "Mommy!" Kara squealed.
"Hi baby girl." I said, scooping her up and planting a kiss on her cheek. "C'mon, sweetie." I said to Natalie, taking her hand and leading her to the front desk. Elma's co-owner Maura was waiting for me.
"Sorry I'm so late." I apologized.
"No problem." She said dismissively. "I have three kids with parents on the way." She jerked her head towards the door, sending her ratty split ends flying. "It's the rain. No one wants to drive in this mess."
"Two accidents on the way over." I told her.
She looked out the window again and I followed her gaze, noticing the darkening sky. "Do you want to wait here until it lightens up?"
"Nah," I said. "We'll be fine."
    "You sure?"
"Yeah. Why, do you think I should wait it out?"
"No, I'm sure you'll be fine." She said unconvincingly. "It's just, you aren't a very experienced driver..."
"I'll be careful," I promised, heading for the door. We exchanged waves, and I pushed open the door. We approached the car, and I settled the girls into their car seats.
"How was your day?" I asked them, pulling out of the parking lot and onto the busy road.
"We played with Ren-reen-rain-" Kara sounded out in the back seat.
"Renee?" I helped her. She nodded eagerly.
I twisted the steering wheel, narrowly avoiding a tree. The road was slick, and it was making me nervous. I turned around briefly to check out the road behind me.
"Mommy?" Natalie said anxiously. "Why isn't that one moving?"
I turned around, but too late. The car in front of me was still on the road, and I tried desparately to stop, slamming on the brakes. The car screeched, but slammed into the car before I could help it.
I heard Kara and Natalie let out screams in the back seat, but all I saw as we tumbled down the hill was blackness.
    "Mommy!" One of them cried.
That was the last thing I heard before I blacked out.

    Part 1
I've never really been one of the popular crowd. At my school, that clique consists of Marnie Witherspoon, Rachel Lamberg, and Nicolette Vine-the followers. And then there was Carlin Fuller- the queen bee.
Its never really been my dream to be popular, but when the opportunity opened up for me, there was no way I was going to let it pass.
It started one Saturday in October, beginning of Junior year. I had just walked in to the nearest sushi house when I caught a glimpse of Nicolette's unmistakable scarlet hair. Curious, I followed, peeping my head around a corner.
Pressed up against the exposed brick was Nicolette- making out with Paul Christiansen- Carlin's boyfriend.
Shocked, I ducked back around the corner. Major. Scandal. Then that thought ran through my head. I could totally sell out Nicolette. And then- I could take her spot! Happy with my plan, I slipped back around the corner and pulled my camera phone out of my pocket, snapping a picture.
Grin on my face, I hurried back to the table where my best friend Sadie was waiting. "Where did you go?" She exclaimed. "I was following the waitress to the table and then- BOOM. You were gone!" She waved her chopsticks in the air as she talked, and I had to laugh as I pushed down her arm.
"Calm down!" I said. "You're gonna poke someone's eyes out like that!" She laughed and dug into her sushi. I debated telling her what I had just seen, but for some reason I held back. Maybe it was because Sadie had always hated- and publicly made fun on- Carlin and them. Which was exactly why they hated Sadie. And because I was Sadie's friend, I was an accomplice, and they hated me too. So this was the only chance I had.
So I picked up my sushi and took a bite like nothing unusual had just happened.

I headed towards Adele's, hurrying to get out of the freezing rain that had just started. I brushed my hair out of my face and lifted up my purse, covering my hair with it.
After a few minutes, the dreary gray sky began to clear up- just as I was arriving at Adele's. I knocked on the smooth white door, and glanced in through the window to the left of the door, only to see Adele rushing toward the door.
"Hey!" She said, cracking the door open. "Come on in," She invited, opening the door wider.
I smiled, grateful to be out of the cold, and walked in. I followed Adele to the basement, waving to her little sister Melody on the way down.
The group down there consisted of Darlene, Sarah, Danielle, and Macy, as well as Emily McCann, Georgia Maguire, and Katie Fields, our "sometimes" friends.
They greeted me as a group as I pulled off my jacket and sat down. I hadn't been there more than two minutes when Mom texted me.
Where ARE you? Just got a call from the daycare. The girls need to be picked up!
I ignored it and stuffed my phone back in my pocket, but that didn't work. Moments later, my phone buzzed incessantly, indicating a call. "One moment," I said, excusing myself from the circle.
Out in the hallway, I picked up. "What?" I hissed.
Mom's voice was muffled through the phone. "Where the hell are you? Kara and Natalie need to be picked up."
    "Can't you-" I started.
"No! I can't. I'm at work. And they're your daughters, Char. Be a responsible parent." And then she hung up.
I pulled the phone away from my ear and stared at it, trying to make up my mind. I debated staying, but I knew that it would only result in a grounding. So I popped my head back into the room.
    "Sorry guys. I gotta go."
"But you just got here!" Macy whined.
I shot her a look. "I know. But I have somewhere else to be."
"Whatever." Darlene mumbled. "Let her leave." I looked at her, but she wouldn't make eye contact with me. "Bye, Char."
I headed up the stairs, pausing once to turn around. "Bye."

    All My Secrets 7
I scribbled a quick note for my mom before heading out the door. The air was cool, and I walked briskly. After a few minutes, I arrived at Cafe Rosa. I saw Conner through the window, and he waved happily. Pushing open the heavy glass door, I spotted my phone on the table in front of him. "What the hell?" I spat, approaching him.
His smile quickly faded. "What do you mean?" He sounded sincerely confused.
    "You stole my phone. Why?"
He hesitated. "I wanted to see you again." I rolled my eyes.
"You could've just asked." I said, reaching down to scoop up my phone. "Bye, Conner."
He scrambled to his feet and ran over, blocking the exit. "Wait! Do you, uh, wanna get some coffee or something?" His eyes were hopeful. I sighed, and sat back down at the table with him.
His smile gradually returned, and I stood. "I'll be right back. Get me a latte, please?" He nodded, and, phone in hand, I headed to the Ladies Room. It was empty, so I turned on my cell and pressed number 3 on Speed Dial. I tapped my foot listening, and hating, Shannon's ringback. Finally, she picked up.
    "Hey. Got your phone back?"
    "Yeah."
"You don't sound happy." I stared at myself in the mirror.
    "I'm not."
"Why not? You looked so excited before."
"Shan...I don't need him stalking me. All my contact information's in my phone. Who knows what he did with it? He stole my phone to see me again....how else is he going to find me?"
Shannon let out a small laugh. "Char, you're being a little overdramatic, don't you think? I mean, he admitted he wanted to see you again. He likes you, that's not a crime."
I sighed again, blowing my hair away from my face, and checked my watch. "I gotta go, Shannon. He's probably wondering where I am."
"Kay," She said in a sing-song voice. And then, teasingly, "but don't have too much fun."

    All My Secrets 6
The rest of the day flew by, and I trudged home from the bus stop thinking about the day's events. In the halls after last period, Conner had met up with me at my locker-again- and slipped my cell phone out of my bag. I didn't notice until I was on the bus, and he was gone. God damn it. I thought. Why the hell did he do that?
As usual, the first thing I did when I walked in the door was hang up my bag and head to my room. My laptop was on my desk, open, and I waited patiently for Skype to open. When it finally did, I clicked on Shannon's name and waited for her to get home.
Shannon Tanner and I had met in a counseling group for teen moms. There were girls from all over the country, and Shannon and I had immediately clicked. Unfortunately, while I was in Kissimmee, Shannon resided in Fort Worth, Texas.
"Hey!" Shannon's cheery voice got my attention. There she was on screen- dark brown hair, green eyes, freckles, welcoming smile. "How was school?"
    "There's this new guy-"
"Oooh!" Her eyes grew wide and she leaned forward eagerly. "Tell me everything!"
I blushed. "His name is Conner-"
"Are you in love?" She teased.
    "No! But he-"
    "What's he like?"
"I would tell you if you let me get in a full sentence!"
    "Oops. Sorry, ok, go!"
I laughed. She had constant peppiness and energy at all hours of the day. "This is what I know so far- he has blond hair, brown eyes, around 5'7", muscular, followed me around, stole my cell phone, he called me pretty-"
"He called you pretty?! Damn, he moves fast."
    "Shannon!"
"What? Ok, so he probably stole your phone so he could say he "found" it, then you'll have to meet up so he can give it back to you. Also, he'll have put his number in your phone, and yours in his."
I contemplated that. "Ok...I'll let you know when that happens. Anyway, I totally slipped up. He paid to much attention to me, meaning he noticed that I love my "sisters" way too much."
"You'll be fine. You can handle it!"
"If I let this get out...I'd have no more friends."
"You're telling me this? I'm a complete leper at my school, so believe me, I know. But you'd still have me!"
"And you," I reminded her, "are about 1,200 miles away."
    She shrugged. "I manage."
Just then, my phone rang. "It's my number." I told Shannon.
    "It's Conner! I knew it."
I listened patiently to Conner. He was saying that we should meet up, so he could give me back my phone. Shannon waited to be filled in. "Your prediction came true." I informed her when I'd hung up. "I've gotta go, but I'll talk to you later."
"Have fun!" She said in a sing-song voice.
I waved and turned off the monitor, then grabbed my coat and headed out the door.

    All My Secrets 5
The cafeteria greeted us with the dim sound of chatter. Adele and I weaved our way through the crowded room until we got to the table smack in the middle of the cafeteria, reserved for the "popular people", as we were referred to. The table consisted of me, Adele, Darlene, Sarah Trent, Danielle Monroe, Macy McGuire, Ian London, Kyle, Grant Steeler, Bradley, and John O'Dillard.
It was a full table, and everyone knew better than to sit there without an invitation. Everyone except, apparently, Conner. "Charlene," He greeted me, pulling out the chair next to mine and taking a seat. Adele and I, the only two at the table so far, stared at him.
"What are you doing?" I hissed.
"What do you mean?" He asked, oblivious. I could see Kyle, Bradley, and Sarah entering the caf. I had to get rid of Conner, now.
"She means," Adele interrupted. "That you can't sit here. So, buh-bye!" She gave him a little wave, then spun around and opened her lunch bag.
"What does she mean I can't sit here?" Conner's expression looked slightly hurt.
"We already have a full table," I said hurriedly. Kyle, Sarah, and Bradley were approaching. "Sorry."
He nodded, not making eye contact with me. "Ok. Bye, Charlene." My eyes followed him, but my body stayed seated.
"What was that about?" Sarah snorted as she dropped into the seat next to me. "Why was he sitting here?"
"Who knows?" I rolled my eyes, feeling a slight pang of guilt as I did so. "But it's ok; I got rid of him."
"Thank god." And that was the end of it. Seconds later, Darlene and Danielle came in and took their seats, shortly followed by Ian. Minutes after, John, Grant, and Macy came bounding in.
I detached myself from their gossip for the rest of the lunch, quietly eating, glancing over at Conner every now and then. He wasn't sitting at an empty table, but he was sitting with the soccer team, at an empty end. I felt bad for kicking him out, but my table was already established- no room for anyone else.
"Char?" I looked over to find Danielle staring at me intently. "You ok? You've barely said a word all lunch."
"I'm fine," I said, forcing a mouthful of food down my throat. "Just...tired."
"You were checking out the new kid!" Darlene interjected. "I knew you liked him!"
"No! I don't. So drop it, Darlene. Ok? Is it possible that for one minute, you can keep your nose out of everyone else's business?"
She shrank back. "Jeez. Say what you really think, why don't you?" I ignored her and gave my attention to Kyle and Ian, trying, but failing, to get Conner out of my mind.

    All My Secrets 3
Once in class, I slid into my spot next to my friend Darlene. "What happened to Emily?" I asked, noticing that her usual seat on my other side was empty. Darlene didn't look up from her notebook; she just kept doodling with her sparkly pink pen.
"She got moved to another class." I peered over her shoulder, and rolled my eyes upon seeing "Kyle and Darlene" or "Mrs. Darlene Williams" splattered all over the page.
    "Why?"
"Because," Darlene said, finally looking up, "we both know she's not the sharpest knife in the drawer." I contemplated that.
    "Interesting analogy."
Darlene ignored me. "I guess Ms. Hathaway finally realized she wasn't smart enough for this class." She shrugged, capped her pen, and tossed her long honey colored locks over her shoulder. "Wonder who's gonna take her place."
I just nodded and pulled out my geometry book. "Class!" Ms. Hathaway called, attracting my attention. "We have a new student joining us today. Please welcome Conner Mills." She made it sound like he was a celebrity. Classic. I thought. It's like a predictable movie. Popular girl meets cute, nerdy new guy. They get to know each other. When do we fall in love?
I rolled my eyes again and snorted. "Excuse me?" Conner said, leaning over to my desk.
"Nothing." I blushed. "I didn't say anything." He grinned and returned to his own desk.
"So," He said. "Geometry." I just looked at him, and he gave me that cute, lopsided grin. Hold it together, Char. He's just a guy. My math binder was covered with pictures, as most of my possessions were. I scanned them, my eyes falling on three in particular.
One of me and my best friend, Shannon. Another of me and my ex-boyfriend Bradley. A lump formed in my throat, but I ignored it. Last, another of me, Natalie, and Kara. "You really love your sisters."
"What?" I asked, startled. Conner gestured to the picture.
"You're really close with your sisters. Hell, I hate mine." I shrugged.
"I love them. You'll understand when-" I cut myself off and looked back to my book.
"When what?" He pestered. I shook my head frantically.
    "Nothing."
    "Tell me!"
"Just drop it!" My tone surprised even me. When you have kids of your own, I was going to say. But I'd worked so hard, for so long to keep this a secret and I was not going to blow it over some guy.
