All My Secrets 15
"Where is she?"
Mom looked over. "Natalie's in ICU, honey, and Kara's at home with a babysitter."
"Bring Kara here."
"Sure thing, sweetie." She got up to make a phone call, then returned shortly. "I'm going to pick her up now. Okay?"
"What about Nat?" I asked. I could hear my voice shaking, and I gulped back tears.
"She has to stay downstairs, Char, but as soon as you're okay you can go visit."
"But you and Dad and Grandma...you're all here. She's all alone. She can't be alone! She'll be scared!" My voice rose uncontrollably, and my heart raced.
"Calm down!" Dad said, jumping up. "Calm down," He repeated, calmer. "Don't panic Char. I'll go down right now. Do you want me to go see her?"
I nodded slightly, and a salty tear slid down my cheek and stopped on my upper lip. He bent down and kissed my forehead. "Tell her I love her," I called as Dad left the room, and he nodded.
I turned back to Shannon. "It's gonna be ok," She whispered, squeezing my hand.
"You don't know that."
"Not for sure." She answered. "But the doctors are gonna do everything they can to save her." A knock at the door distracted me, cutting off my reply. "Looks like you have a visitor." Shannon said, hopping off the side of my bed and strutting to the door.
She pulled it open, and in came Adele, Darlene, Sarah, Danielle, Macy, Ian, Kyle, Grant, Bradley, and John. My entire lunch table. A few cheerleaders followed them in- Georgia, Emily, Marie, Katie, and Paige. They carried more flowers, balloons, cards, and presents than there were on the entire floor.
One at a time, they came forward with a hug, and when they had all greeted me, they stood there awkwardly. Adele perched herself on the side of my bed, next to Shannon.
"I was so worried about you!" Adele started, and the others pitched in. "We were so scared." "I love you Char!" "Everyone wants to know when you'll be better." "I don't know what would've happened if I lost you!" "You're my best friend!"
I exchanged a glance with Shannon. She smirked, and I bit my lip, holding back a smile. "Thanks, guys." I interrupted. "This is Shannon- my best friend, from Texas." Darlene gave her a tight-lipped smile, but Adele shook her hand and greeted her warmly.
I introduced them one by one, and we sat there chatting until the door pushed open again. "What is going on in here?" It was Mom's voice, and I could hear Kara squeal. My heart pounded again.
"Move!" I commanded everyone, so I could see her. And then, there she was.
Bouncy blonde curls, big sapphire eyes, slightly flushed forehead.
I had never been so happy to see her before in my life.
