The Lies We Told
chapter one, part 1
Noella Cartier stared at herself in the full-length mirror. Her skin looked awful and washed out, her auburn hair seemed frizzy and not shiny enough, and her eyeliner looked smudged. "The lighting in these bathrooms always makes me look so bad." She sighed, readjusting her black ruffled Bird by Juicy Couture skirt.
Aimee Klein smirked at Noella's reflection in the mirror. "Yeah... The lighting." She fluffed her silky brunette hair and smacked her gloss-covered lips.
Noella whirled around. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"Come on, you know she's joking, Ell." Macy rolled her eyes. "You look fine."
The girls spent the next few seconds finishing their makeup in silence, which was interrupted by the annoying iPhone ringtone coming from Aimee's handbag.
"God," Lauren Pamfield slammed her mascara down on the sink. "Put that thing on vibrate, it's going off every 2 minutes!"
Noella hopped up onto the sink, peeking over Aimee's shoulder as she quickly hit "ignore". "Better yet," she added, "Put it on silent, since you never seem to answer it anyway."
"Yeah, who keeps calling you?" Lauren grabbed for the purple-encased phone. Aimee quickly snatched it away and dropped it into her bag.
"Some loser." She rolled her emerald eyes and puffed her hair for the 6th time in the last 3 minutes, not making eye contact with anyone besides her own reflection.
Macy jumped in, "is it that Brian kid that you blocked on Facebook?" She always remembered every detail of Aimee's petty life, almost scarily.
"Yeah, that kid." Aimee replied hesitantly. "It's so annoying."
Noella exchanged a look with Lauren. They both knew something was up. Usually Aimee would brag about her stalkers, so why was she lying like that, so obviously?
"Well, come on, we're gonna be late. Not a good impression on the first day of high school." Aimee started down the hallway, her silver heels clacking on the ground and her silky hair bouncing behind her, obviously dropping the subject. The three other girls shrugged at each other and followed. It probably hadn't meant anything anyway.
