    Chasing Woods
    Chapter Sixteen
Cam in love with me? That was crazy talk. She just continues to mess with my head. But what if it was true? I needed to know if this was true. But who could tell me for sure? LeeAnn may have said it but that didn't make it true. And again she sabotaged us over a guy! Come on! Cam in love with me just didn't make sense. He could have any girl he wanted and we were best friends. He couldn't. He didn't.
    *********************
On the way to super sectional championship, I found myself sitting next to Austin and across from Cam. I caught Cam looking at me at one and snuggled closer to Austin. I'd be lying if I said I didn't over analyze Cam's every move since LeeAnn said that he was in love with me. I needed to talk to someone about this. I looked around the bus. Who was as close to Cam as I was? Bingo. I wiggled away from Austin.
"I'll be right back." I got up and walked a couple rows forward. "Josh beat it. I need to talk to Fitz for a minute." Fitz paused his music and tossed his headphones around his neck.
    "What's up?"
"I need to ask you something about Cam."
"Why aren't you just asking Cam?"
"Because I can't. Look the other day when I confronted LeeAnn she said Cam's in love with me. Is that true?"
    "Woods."
"Brandon Fitzhenry tell me. Is it true?"
"Yes Woods. Cam's always had a crush on you but we all figured you weren't interested in him and then you started dating Austin."
"But then why did he help me get back together with Austin."
"Because he'd rather see you be happy even if he's not the one that makes you happy."
    "Ughhhhh."
"I know thats a lot to take in." Fitz threw his arm around my shoulder and pulled me close.
"How did I not see it all this time."
"We've been all saying that since like sixth grade."
"I feel like I need to talk to him."
"Maybe you should. But not now."
    "Why?"
"Because we're one game away from making it to state. Cam's emotions will be in a funk if you talk about it now."
    "But mine are right now."
"Yeah but remember your with Austin and I have complete confidence you can ignore it for the game. Just please don't say anything to him right now it would be the worst timing ever."
    "Fine I won't say anything."
We won the super sectional and were headed on to state. But Fitz was wrong I could have worse timing because leaving the locker room to go warm up to the state semi-final game just as Cam waswalking out the door I blurted out.
"Cam are you in love with me?"

    Chapter Fifteen
Games were going by and we were one step away from playing for the state championship. It was incredible. There was one thing bugging me though. I still didn't know why LeeAnn did this to us. She avoided school for a week after the incident at the dance and when she returned everyone was giving her the cold shoulder. No one was sitting her at lunch, not even her partner in crime Julie. I almost felt bad for her, but then I remembered what she did to us, our school, our team. But I still wanted to know why.
"One more win and were in the finals!" Fahey shouted sitting down at the table.
"Hey were already elite eight technically right?" Josh asked.
"We're making it to the final four." Austin stated like there was no other option. To be honest I felt that way too. It was too close to go this far to not win it all.
"Thank god we got to do this because you know someone tried to prevent us from making history!" Fitz shouted. Then he coughed LeeAnn's name. She sunk down in her seat and tried to hide her face behind a brown lunch bag she had.
"We can still see you Randerson, even though we wouldn't mind not seeing your face around here anymore." JR yelled in her direction. The guys brust out laughing and that was all it took for LeeAnn to bolt from the cafeteria. I got up and went to the bathroom, knowing that was exactly where I would find her. When I opened the door she was dabbing her eyes with a paper towel.
"What do you want?" She asked me. Refusing to look at me she checked her eye-make up in the mirror.
"Look I just want an answer. Thats all I want."
"Woods let it go. You've got your stupid state tournament and everyone in school on your side. Just drop it."
"I can't LeeAnn I have to know why you would do this to the guys, the program, me. We were teammates."
"It has nothing to do sports Woods."
"Then what is it? Is it Austin?"
    "No! It's Cam."
"Cam? What does Cam have to do with this?"
    "Everything!"
"Your going to have to explain this to me."
"I've been in love with Cam since like fourth grade. And then Austin comes along and I think to myself I could see myself getting over Cam and then you go and like him and ofcourse he likes back because everyone loves you Woods."
"I still don't get what Cam has to do with this."
"Cause he's never gonna like me he's into someone else."
    "You don't know that."
"Don't play dumb Woods. You know as well as I do who that boy likes."
"I seriously have no clue what your talking about."
"You're seriously stupid if you don't know Cam's in love with you."

    Chapter Fourteen
The guilt ate me up so badly the rest of the night me and Austin ended up leaving the dance early becuase I didn't want to be there.
"I know you feel bad but I think she got what she deserved." Austin said breaking the silence of our quiet walk.
"I don't know if public humiliation was the route to go.I wanted her to tell me why she did it. That won't happen now." I was so confused. I wanted her to get what she deserved but wasn't happy once she did. I didn't like being mean to people.
    "She may come clean."
"I don't like being mean to people."
"I know and you're not. She had that coming plus she was all over your awesome boyfriend."Austin grinned at me.Butterflies flew through my stomach anytime that grin was directed at me. We got to my front door. "You gonna be okay for the game tomorrow?"
    "Yeah nothing could change that."
"I'm kinda nervous." Austin shoved his hands in his pockets.
"Don't be first round should be nothing for us."
"I think I know something that could help me relax."
    "What's that?"
"This." And next thing I know Austin's lips were on mine.It was the cliche walk you home kiss you at the door kiss but I didn't care. Most people probably thought me and Austin were like crazy all of eachother byut that wasn't true. In actuallity this was the first time we kissed. And it was incredible. He finally pulled away.
"Well I feel better now." Austin said. "I'll see you in the morning Woods." He jumped down the stairs and kicked his feet together in the air as he walked away. I giggled as he walked away. But as soon as I shut the door all the bad feeling came flooding back.
    ************
It was game day. This was it. The road began here. We were playing out in a different county so we got to take a bus to our game. Cam came up to me as we got on.
    "You okay?" He asked.
    "Never better."
    "Woods."
    "Not the time Cam."
"Woods we need to talk about it."
"Why? Is it not enough the guilt ate me up all night ? Not enough that I barely slept last night? Not I enough that I feel like the meanest person in the world? Cam trust me I think I've got the guilty thing covered, but I perfer to focus on basketball right now." That was all it took for Cam and make that the rest of the team silent. I sat in the very back by myself even Austin gave me my distance. After an hour into the drive Cam plopped into the seat beside me.
    "I didn't mean to hit a nerve."
    "I know."
"You know you aren't a mean person. The sacrifice you've made for this team Woods to help us get here. LeeAnn deserved that, no matter how bad you feel. We deserve this, use your speed and make them chase you Woods." Cam got up vacating the seat next to me leaving me with too much thinking to do before game time.
    *************
The game started and they were much better than we expected them to be. In the fourth quater is was all knotted up at fourty-one. We needed to do something. I needed to do something. Thats when Cam's words came back. "Make them chase you Woods." We weren't here to lose first round we were to go all the way to the finals. I pounced on their point guard and took off down court with the ball. They were sprinting after me but it didn't matter because they may have been Chasing Woods, but I was chasing my dream.

    Chapter Thirteen
There were days until our first game of the tournament and I wanted LeeAnn to crack before that. Also our school's dance was Friday night, which was the night before game one. Maybe I'll let it go until after game one. LeeAnn was constantly on pins and needles around me, it was fabulous. I know I shouldn't enjoy someones misery so much, but she deserved it. Anyone who tries to mess with me and my team had everything coming to them that I had enstore for them. Friday at school, everyone was buzzing about the dance and it was nice to put the nerves of the game aside for now.
"So is there a certain color I should wear tonight?" Austin asked slipping into the seat next me to at lunch.
"I have no idea. Wear whatever color you want."
"Well don't couples match at dances?"
"When its more formal but tonight I'm nout sure it matters."
"Well wanna give me a hint to the color your top is?" Austin asked wiggling his eyebrows. Oh.my.god. he was so cute.
"Green." I smiled at him. I was actually really excited about my outfit for the night. Cute green sweater that went to my elbows , a jean skirt and grey toms. Simple but still cute enough for the dance. Allie leaned over and whispered in my ear.
"Anything planned for tonight on LeeAnn?"
"No. I'm gonna wait till after the first game. But you know what let's just have fun tonight." My best friend smiled. Oh yeah it was gonna be a good night.
    ******************************
That night me and Allie arrived at the dance together. Allie had on a cute purple top that had a scoop neck and like me had a jean skirt on. Most of the girls had jean skirts on tonight. Some seventh grade girls were over dressed in fancy dresses but it was their first dance so you kind of couldnt blame them. Only kind of though. I saw LeeAnn when we walked in she was in a white v-neck t-shirt and a tight pink skirt and clearly flirting with Fitz and JR. Or should I say trying since they weren't really paying attention to her. Had to love my boys. Speaking of that where was mine. Thats when two arm slipped around my waist. Jumping because it starleted me for a second I whirled around and came face to face with Austin who I should not have been surpised was ina green polo and jeans.
"Like my shirt?" He grinned at me.
"Well I cant argue with a cute guy in my favorite color."
The night was going perfectly smooth. The guys on the team were snubbing LeeAnn and Austin was one heck of a dancer. That boy had almost as good of moves as he did on the basketball court. Late in the dance Cam stole me for a slow dance we were chatting like normal when suddenly he said,
    "Uh-oh."
"What?" I asked glancig to where he was looking to find LeeAnn attempting to drag my boyfriend onto the dance floor. "Let me go." Cam immediately released me but followed closely. "Get your hands off of my boyfriend."
    "You don't own him!"
"He's my boyfriend. Go dance with someone who actually wants to dance with you. Oh I'm sorry no one does."
"I think your boyfriend does but he doesn't want to hurt your precious feelings." She shot back.
"My boyfriend would never want to dance with you after what you did."
"What are you talking about?" She took a step back. She was scared. Good.
"You know exactly what I'm talking about and I think it's time everyone knew about it." I took off toward the D.J.
"Woods stop!" Leenn practicly wailed but it was too late the microphone was in my hands.
"Hey guys you know how the accusations of Austin were dropped because he was falsely accused of sabotaging the team right before our first round regional game. But the true culprit isn't Austin but they do stand among us tonight. Does everyone want to know who it is?" I didn't even wait for a response. "There is video proof that the person who faked a phone call from Austin's cell phone was LeeAnn Randerson." I pointed and the room gasped and turned to look. She ran out of the gym. It was public humiliation at its best. Allie ran up to me.
"You got her! Omg Woods that was great."
    "Sure was."
Too bad it didn't make me feel one bit better.

    Chapter Twelve
They were dead. DEAD! They were dead because I was going to kill them. Oh.my.god.Oh.my.god.I burst out of the securtiy office and my feet carried me to the locker room. I heard Cam and Austin begging me to slow but my body and mind were in over drive. I burst through the door and stood in the middle of it for a second. The boys came through the door, Cam sank down on the nearest bench to him.
"Woods. Let's talk we can't do anything irrational." Austin said calmly.
"How can you be calm ? You were impersonated and you're like public enemy number one right now."
"I'm angry Woods. Trust me I'm furious but I know if we do something stupid theres gonna be no state tournament at all."
"He's right Woods. We can't act too fast." Cam said.
    "I want revenge." I said.
"We do too. But I think the first thing we need to do is notify coach and tell him what we found and clear Austin's name." Cam said, taking his phone out. He stepped out into the hallway.
"I know this is hard,Woods." Austin whispered. I stared at the locker infront of me and threw my fist into it. I felt Austin's arms come around me as I sank to the floor and the tears came. We were teammates how could she do this us? What could possible justify this in here mind this was okay? There was no possible reason to why this was okay. It may not be the time now, but when the time was right LeeAnn Randerson was going to pay for this.
    ************************
Coach came to school immediately after Cam's call. We showed him the tape. How Julie played lookout and LeeAnn on Austin's phone chatting away for a good few minutes. The times on the tape and the phone call from Austin's phone matched up. There was no doubt LeeAnn did this. Coach called the state committe and explained how Austin had been framed and this was just a prank played by one of the kids. No one truly was threathened by us.
"Okay. Thank you very much." Coach said closing his phone.
    "Well?" Cam said.
    "What?"Coach asked.
    "What did they say?"
"Oh just that they have no choice but to reinstate us!"
"Ahhh! Yes! Oh yeah!" were heard amongst all three of us. We were back and it was sweet!
    **************************
The next morning on the morning announcements at school they said the magical words.
"In athletics we have wonderful news. All the accusations against Austin Filbin have been dropped and the eighth grade boys have been reinstated into the state tournament." Principal Meyer announced. The room exploded. What I would give to see LeeAnns face right now. But the face she had at lunch made up for it. When she entered the cafeteria she looked to where the guys team usually sat to find no one there. Then her gaze shifted to where the girls team sat, and all of us the boys and girls team were sitting together.
"What is this?" LeeAnn asked approaching the table.
"Well I was thinking, you were right. The tradition of teams having to eat together on game day was stupid." I said.
"So we decided to start a new tradition. The guys an girls eat together during the season. First come, first serve." Austin said.
"Plus it makes it easier on our girl Woods." JR whooped. I caught LeeAnn's gaze and she looked nervous for a second. And I intended to keep it that way.

    Chapter Eleven
I went straight to bed despite my parents attempts to get me to talk to them. I pulled the covers over my head. I wanted to be in a place where none of this exsisted. A world where I had never met Austin Filbin. I wasn't sure how much time had pasted but I heard my door open.
"Go away."I shouted through the covers.
"Not happening Woods." Cam's voice said.
"Cam what are you doing here?" I tossed the cover off my head and glanced at the clock it was only one o'clock. School wasn't out for almost two more hours.
"I'm pretty sure you know exactly why I'm here." He sat down on the edge of my bed.
"How did you get out of school?"
"Easy one phone call to my mom that you left school upset and she came and got me. She's downstairs telling your parents everything you very likely didn't." I flopped back down on my back.
"I don't wanna talk about today."
"We have to talk about it."
"He messed it all up. I borke up with him. I don't care."
"Really? Then why are there tears in your eyes."
    Damn.
"Woods, its okay to care about someone."
"Not when this happens.I should hate him."
"Riley," Cam never used my first name unless what he was about to be totally serious with me. "I don't know what that person on the phone said to you but I don't think Austin did this to us."
My jaw dropped. "You are kidding right? Its not like the lady lied to me."
"Woods, think about it. What reason would he have to do it? This was on the line for him too."
I let that sink in for a moment.
    "I didn't think about that."
"Despite what we all think Coach benched him until it can be proved he didn't do it."
"Well now theres five of you left to play. If they ever drop this darn investigation."
"I talked to Austin. We all did. After you left. He's a wreck woods. Devestated that you even think he would do this."
    "Is he really?"
"Hes crazy about you Woods. He was on edge of tears when you walked away today."
Wow. All those things online say if a guy crys over you he cares.
"Should I-"I was about to ask Cam if I should pull out my phone and text him but Cam cut me off.
"He'll be here when school lets out to talk."
"He still wants to see me despite what happened?"
"Like I said Woods crazy about you."
    ***************************
School was out and Austin texted Cam he was on his way. I didn't know what to say to him, even though there were so many things I needed to say. Cam went down and let Austin in. He looked like hell when he got into my doorway. I didn't hesitate, I jumped from my bed and into him arms.
"I'm sorry. So sorry. You have no idea." I whispered to him. He held on as if it was the last time he would.
"Woods.I would never do this to. Not to the team. Not to you."
    "Can you forgive me?"
"Ofcourse. Woods this is me and you."
"Is peace restored?" Cam asked poking his head into the room.
    "Yeah." I said.
"Okay everyone sit." Cam said."Show her your phone." Austin dug into his pocket and scrolled through his phone and then handed it to me. On the screen was the number to the state committee. I swear if I just told him to forgive me and he did do this.
"Now before you think, what I know your thinking," Cam said. "Look at the date and time of the call." I looked at the screen. The call was made three weeks ago at 8:10pm. Wait 8:10, that was impossible. We were playing a game that night. It wasn't possible Austin made the call. His phone would have been in out locker room. But who got in there? Wait, the locker room had a camera in it.
"We need to go to school right now." I said jumping from my bed and racing from the room. The boys were right behind me. I went striaght to our office and talked to our security guard. He got the tape and played it back to that date of the phone call. Then it all came clear on the screen.
    "Oh." Cam said.
    "My." Austin said.
    "God!"I screamed.
    They were dead. DEAD!

    Chapter Ten
Time was growing shorter until the first round was set to start and they were still "investigating". So in other words nothing had changed. This was so dumb, this didn't happen last year when we submitted our stud. There was no backlash about me being a girl. I sat down with Allie at lunch that day clearly showing my miserable side.
    "No changes?" Allie asked.
"Now, And I'm out of explanations for why." I told her.
"At least te guys have been taking it well."
"It's a front. I know for a fact Cam and Austin are as miserable as I am."
"I bet you and Austin have been making each other feel better." She was clearly trying to lighten the mood. Austin was the only silver lining in this whole thing, if it wasn't for him I might have lost it already. I just nodded. "Hey!I have an idea. Maybe you guys thought of this I don't know but have any of you asked the committee why you're under investigation? Like what made them even look into it in the first place? Allie asked. I just stared at my best friend or a moment, before throwing my arms around here.
"Allie you're a genuis!" I jumped from my seat and pulled my phone out once I was in the hallway. I had to listen to some boring recording before someone would actually talk to me.
"Hello my name is Denise. How can I help you?" A lady said.
"Hi, I'm calling about the Woods investigation." I said.
    "May I ask who's calling?"
    "Riley Woods."
"What can I do for you sweetheart?"
"I was wondering if you could tell me how we ended up under investigation?"
"I'm not really supposed to discuss that information."
    My heart dropped.
"But for you I'll make an exception."
    "Thank you so much."
"Okay Riley it looks to be that someone reported your team for having an unfair advantage by having you on the team."
"Do you have who reported us?"
"Let me look." I heard some clicking noises in the backround. "Ahh, here it is. The report was made by an Austin Filbin."
    WHAT?????????????????
I looked into the lunch room and just stared at the kid who was supposed to be my boyfriend and our teammate.
"Could you repeat that? I don' t think I heard you correctly." At that moment Austin locked eyes with me and winked at me. It made me sick to my stomach.
"The report was made my Austin Filbin." I hung up.I couldn't handle anymore. I looked into the lunchroom and saw Asutin had left his lunch table. And next thing I knew he was right infront of me.
"What's going on babe?" He asked.
    "Get away from me."
"Woods are you okay?" He was concerned now and reached out to grab my arm but I jerked away.
"Don't touch me!" I was shouting now." I never wanna see you again. We're over. Stay the hell away from me!" I had the attention of everyone in the room. Cam was now out of his seat and coming our way.
"Wood what's wrong?" Cam asked on his way over.
"Hey guys!" I yelled making sure I had all my teammates attention. "Austin's the one behind the report. He's the reason we're being investigated." A collective gasp was heard throughout the room. Austin started to say something but I didn't hear it. I bolted all the way to the office. I couldn't stand to be there for one more second. How could he do this to us?
feedback? sorry I needed a break for a bit from the story but we're back now.

    Chapter Nine
    Investigation? For what? And why?
"Coach what is going on?" Cam asked. Coach spun around, you could tell he was fuming.
"We're are under investigation by the state tournament committe. They're investigating the fact that Woods shouldn't play because we have six boys now, unless we can prove it to be neccessary."
"WHAT?" Everyone screamed at the same time.
    "But we need Woods."Josh said.
"Yeah our team wouldn't be what it is without her!" Fahey added.
"Everyone calm down. We have a week and a half to get this fixed and our story out."
"How are we gonna do that?" I asked.
"We live in a small town. And what does word do in a small town?" He asked all of us.
"Travel fast." Austin said. "I get it. The faster the story gets around here it might hit a higher authority and they could help us even more. Is that what your saying coach?"
    "Thats exactly it Austin."
As much as I wanted to feel happy that we were going to get the story out I was distraught at the same time. We were a step closer and now I was the reason we might not get it now. I walked across the gym to the bleachers and plopped down. A few seconds later Cam was next to me.
"We're gonna get this fixed. We're not gonna do this without you."
    *******************
Every type of social media was used to talk about what was going on. And soon enough it reached the local news channel. They set up a day to come an interview us. We were going to do it during a practice so it seemed natural. They only talked to Coach Larson, Cam, Austin and me. It would be airing that night at six and ten and everyday until we were reinstated to the tournament. That night I was sitting on a couch wedged between Austin and Cam, I have no idea how we agreed to watch this together but we did.
"Shut up its on." FItz yelled.
"Our feature story tonight, comes from a local grade school, St. Johns home of the Braves and Bravette who are looking to make a run to the state tournament for basketball. Theres a very special thing about this basketball team though. The Braves have seven players on our team Cam Stabler, JR Medina, Josh Fisher, Brandon Fitzhenry, Joe Fahey, Austin Filbin, and the thing that makes this team so special, their seventh player, eighth grade girl Rielly Woods. We took a trip to the grade school to chat with the Coach and a few of the players."
Coach Larson's face appeared on the screen.
"Coach Kevin Larson, you were the one who brought Rielly on to the team?"
"Well it wasn't exactly my idea but I was good with going ahead with it. And its been a huge benefit for both the team and Rielly. It taught the team acceptance and Rielly is an even better basketball player from playing both teams. Now it would be nice if the state committee would be as accepting as these boys have."
Then the it panned over to Cam.
"I've been friend with Woods since like fourth grade. I'd be lying I said I wasn't worried about how things would got this year because guys hit their growth spurt and get faster and stuff but she's kept up with us the whole way. Our team wouldn't be where we are without her."
Now Austin was on the camera.
"It was different coming on to a team that had a girl. And I was a total jerk in the beginning but she didn't take any crap from me. She doesn't take any crap from anyone. She's fearless in the best way possible."
    The it was me.
"I've just its all I've ever known. I wanted the boys to be able to have their team a few years ago and now I'm being punished for it. I don't see why its such a big deal anyways. Most teams are unthreatened by me. I'd give anything to get this shot with this team. We're good and we deserve this, its not fair we're under investigation."
Then they flashed a sign that anyone with any information to help was to contact Coach Larson immediately.
Who could of guessed things were about to go from bad to worse?

    Chasing Woods
    Chapter Eight
We had sent everything in for the state playoffs two days ago. Everything was set. We had to win three more games. Just three more games. The girls shot had fell out the window about a month ago. LeeAnn was being really unreasonable about the fact me and Austin were together. But in my head none of that mattered anymore. Three more games, three more wins and we 'd be getting ready to head to our first regional game. These next three games were crucial. The one that night was the most important because this was the team that ruined our chances last year. I wasn't going to let that happen. We had come to far. We deserved this.
    *****************************
It's the fourth quater and we were down by six. Coach Larson called time-out.
"What is going on guys?" He asked me. No one answered. I looked around Cam looked extremely p.oed Austin was sweating and looked nervous. And me I wanted to puke. It seemed like everything was going wrong. On top of how badly the game was going, for the first time since me and Austin started dating, LeeAnn showed up to a home game. She smirked every time I did something wrong. She was enjoying the fact I was messing up.
"Guys let's get it together." Cam said. "This is so not the place to start getting scared."
The refs blew the whistle and the time-out was up.I grabbed Austin's arm as we headed back on to the floor.
    "What's the matter?"
    "What you mean?"
    "You seem nervous."
    "I'm fine."
    "You sure?"
    "Yes Woods." He snapped.
"Alright." I was not going to push this right now.
There was a minute and a half to make a six point comeback. I decided to drive and plow through the defense.
"And one!" Cam shouted as the ball went into the basket and my butt hit the floor. I sunk the free throw and we were now down by three with a little over a minute left. They were trying to kill time but thanks to some killer defense from Fitz we got the ball back with fourty seonds left. The other team made a defensive mistake deciding to double team Cam, leaving JR open right under the basket. I whipped him the ball as fast as I could and he easily laid it in. One more good stop and we had to go for last shot win. We were down by one. Twenty seconds left. Thanks to another great defensive play Fitz got us the ball back. As I was speeding down the court I was debating who hands to put the ball in. Cam was double teammed and JR wasn't going to be open like that again. I threw Austin the ball with ten seconds and he put the shot up. I could tell when it was released it was going to miss. I bolted into the lane, snatched the ball up and off balanced put it up. Seconds later the buzzer went off and Austin was tackling me to the ground. It went in. The worst was over. We were safe. The run was in sight and we knew it was possible now. After we shook hands a man approached Coach Larson. The more he talked the more upset coach seemed to get. Then the man spoke loudly enough for all of us to hear.
"The Braves are under investigation until further notice."

    Chapter Seven
The girls game that night was awful. LeeAnn was being ridiculous. She wouldn't pass me the ball at all, actually she did at one point but the pass went to the back of my head. Im lucky she didn't give me a concussion. I would of ended up not playing for either team. But now it was the night of the boys first home game. I was just about to step into the lunchroom when someone grabbed my arm, Austin, what a surprise.
"So which one of these girls should I give my jersey to?" He asked me.
"Why does my opinion matter?" I asked.
"Well I've had a lot of girls ask me to wear it today and I've been keeping my options open."
"Sound likes you should have no problem picking out a girl."
I really wanted this conversation to end.
"Well don't you have any opinion?"
    "It's your jersey Austin."
"Well I guess I could always give it to LeeAnn. I mean she really wants to wear it."
    Was he really doing this?
I turned around and gave him a glare.
"You know what Austin, I really don't care. Give the jersey to whoever you want."
    "But I can'tdo that?"
    "Why?"
"Because the girl I would love to have wear my jersey in the stands tonight will be out on the floor kicking butt with me."
    Ohhhh. OHHHHHH!
"Are you saying what I think you're saying?"
"I like you Woods. But I don't want to give you the idea I don't by giving some random girl my jersey, but I know it's tradition. So you sure you don't want to tell me who to give it to ?" he smirked at me at the end of the sentence.
"How are you sure I even like you ?" I said trying to sound as serious as possible.
"Oh come on are you saying my boyish cham didn't work yet?"
"Okay you got me. I do like you." I thought for a moment. "Give your jersey to Erica. She's really nice and she'll figure out what's up."
"Got it. So you know what happens when two people like each other right?"
"I do. But god only knows where your going with this."
"Well they usual date you know?" He said turning red. I'd never seen Austin so nervous before.
"Well I guess that would be okay."
And it ended up being more than okay becuase that night we were a triple threat, me Austin and Cam and thats when I knew this was it. We were going to make it to state playoffs this year.

    Chasing Woods
    Chapter Six
We were days away from the boys first game. Thankfully the first one was on the road so I didn't have to worry about who the guys would be giving their jerseys to. Granted the pattern was usually the same but Austin would change everything. I know I wasn't supposed to care but I didn't want to see LeeAnn wering Austin's jersey. I don't know what these feelings I were having but they needed to go away fast. Falling for a teammate had bad news written all over it. But with the way he looked at me, I had a feeling we were in the same boat.
    **************************
The girls team had a road game tonight. When me and Allie got to the girls team table, LeeAnn wasn't there.
"Where's LeeAnn?" Allie asked. Julie was chewing so she pointed. I turned to see where she was pointing. LeeAnn was seated right between Ftiz and Austin. Not that she was paying any attention to Fitz or anyone else at the table. I was not going to let this go on. She was not going to walk away from the team on game day. Especially for a guy. I got up and headed over there.
"Woods what are you doing?" Allie asked me.
    "I'm going to fix this."
When I got to the table, I was greeted with "What's up Woods?"
"Hi guys. Hey Lee you suddenly playing for the guys team too?"
"No. I'm all girl. Unlike some of us."
    "Is there a problem here?"
    "Not at all."
"I think we need to talk."I hissed.
"I couldn't agree more." She said getting up. We walked out of the lunch room.
"What are you trying to prove?" I said once we were out the door.
"What we don't always have to sit together on game day?"
"It's tradition. You don't ditch the team."
    "It's a stupid tradition."
"Don't tell me this is about Austin."
    "Why would it be?"
"Because you've been mad since the home game about Austin wearig my jersey."
    "Whatever."
"You can't make the boy like you LeeAnn." Her face changed and she eyed me suspiciously.
"Why do you care if I like Austin or not? Unless, you like Austin?" I didn't answer her. I didn't know what to say because I didn't know what I was feeling. I heard footsteps and suddenly there was a hand on my shoulder. LeeAnn looked at the person then at me.
"Scr*w you Woods!" She turned and walked further away from the cafeteria.
"Everyting okay?" I turned and saw it was Austin. I shrugged his hand off my shoulder and walked back into lunch.
When did I lose control of everything?

    Chasing Woods
    Chapter Five
Game one for the boys was around the corner. Austin's attidue basketball wise had somewhat improved. He was still a major jerk now and then but we were usually able to laugh it off. But for now tonight was the girls home opener. In years past the girls would give the guys their away jersey to wear during the games, like how guys do in football with girls. Ofcourse the guys do it for the girls. Most of the girls were too shy to just hand their jerseys over to the guys, so the guys usually asked the girls for their jersey for the game. On the way to lunch Austin intercepted me from heading to the table with my girls team. The teams usually eat together. I sat mainly with the girls team but on boys gameday I sat with them out of loyalty.
    "Hey Woods." Austin said.
    "What's up Austin?"
"So the guys are all talking about wearing girls jerseys tonight. I was wondering if I would wear yours?"
I was so not expecting him to say that. And this threw me for a loop because Cam always squezzed his way into my road jersey.
"Well, I usually give mine to Cam." I told him honestly.
"What if I made you a deal?"
    "Like?"
"You let me wear your jersey tonight.I'll let you wear mine at the boys first home game." He smiled clearly thinking this was a great deal.
"That's a very appealing offer but theres one problem."
    "What?" His face fell.
"Coach might be a little mad if I wear ther wrong jersey on game day."
"Ohh man brain-fart. My bad. But seriously can I wear your jersey?" That when I noticed Cam was standing with us.
"I told you Cam usually has mine."
"It's cool Woods. Let's Austin wear your jersey.I'll ask Allie tonight." Cam said.
"Ask Allie what?" Allie said now joining us to.
"Can I wear your jersey tonight?" Cam asked her.
"Your not wearing Woods?" She asked clearly confused.
"Nah. Austin's going to. So can I wear yours?"
"Yeah sure. Come on Woods let's go." Allie said taking me to the table with her.
The rest of our team was sitting at the table talking about which guys would ask for their jersey tonight. Ofcourse LeeAnn was talking the loudest.
"So I think he's going to ask me for my jersey for the game tonight." She said as me and Allie joined the table.
    "Who?" Ally asked.
"Austin!" As if it should have been obvious to all of us. Allie's eyes darted me to mine quickly. We knew this was trouble. When LeeAnn liked a guy it was hell for the rest of us. If she found out about Austin wanting to wear my jersey she was going to flip. "Maybe I'll just go ask him myself." She said suddenly, got up from the table and was gone.
"This is not going to be good." Allie said.
"You think?" I glanced over at where LeeAnn was now talking to Austin. He responded to her answer and now the death galre was shot in my direction. Oh boy this was not good.
    *****************
At the game that night LeeAnn hadn't said a word about the jersey thing to anyone but I knew she was angry with me. In the first half anytime she had the ball and I was open she would either force the shot or give it to someone else who wasn't up. We were actually down at half. When we went into the locker room I was ready to scream. I was the captain of this team and we didn't play like this. Just as I opened my mouth Allie beat me to the punch.
    "What is your problem LeeAnn?"
    "No problem here." LeeAnn said.
"Then tell us why you won't pass the ball to Woods?"
    "She's not open."
"Thats b.s. and you know it! Does this have to do with Austin? Because no guy should come between this team."
"I don't evenlike him LeeAnn, not like that." I chimed in.
"Then why is he wearing your jersey?" She snapped.
"He asked me! I was trying to be nice and he's my teammate." She looked at me for a long while.
"Whatever let's just go beat these loser and be done with this."
She may have said we were done with this but I knew this was far from over.

    Chasing Woods
    Chapter Four
Cam: Woods if you a$$ is not outside in the next five seconds I'm leaving you.
Only my best friend threatens to leave me on the the first day of school. Today was the start of everything. Our last year in grade school, all the 8th grade priveligies, the run at the state playoffs. Today was also the day Austin Filbin would be introduced to our class. Maybe I would be lucky and we won't be in the same room. When me and Cam finally reached school I immediately saw Austin with a few of the other guys. God only he could make our stupid school uniform look good. I spotted a bunch of the girls huddled together not to far from where he was clealry squealing and giggling about them. LeeAnn and Ally broke from the circle at the same time. But whereas Ally was headed in my direction LeeAnn was headed for Austin
"Hey Woods. Hey Cam." Ally said to him as he broke off from us to the rest of the guys.
"Let me guess. He's all they talked about all morning?" Like it wasn't it obvious enough.
"What gave it away?" I looked at where LeeAnn was clearly flirting with Austin and he was loving every seocnd of it. It was moments like these I really hated LeeAnn. Yeah, we were teammates but outside of basketball I really didn't like LeeAnn. She was self-centered, and thrived on drama, usually she kept it away from basketball though. I walked with Ally to where the rest of the girls were.
    "Hey Woods." Austin called out.
    Wait what?
I looked over at him. Even LeeAnn looked baffled, that he had stopped paying attention to her to say hi to me.
"Ummm, hey." Needless to say my greeting was not as warm and welcoming as everyone elses probably had been so far today.
When we got upstairs, I was happy to discover LeeAnn was not in my class but sadly Austin was. Our teacher thought it would be fun if someone would show Austin around the school. Everyones hands shot up immediately, except mine. I had no interest in spending anymore time with him then I had to.
"Riley." My teachers said sweetly, school was the only place my frist name was used, "Would you mind showing our new friend Austin around?" I was so tempted to say no but I didn't want my teacher to see me as a disrespectful brat.
"Sure." I shrugged getting up. "Let's go."
We were silent when we stepped outside the classroom and when the tour started I sounded like a cranky museum tour guide who'd given the same tour all day. About halfway through the tour Austin stopped me in a stairwell.
"Do you like hate me or something?"
    "Um kind of."
"Why? I've been in this place like five minutes."
"Hello, do you remember what you said to me at th first practice?"
"Okay I admit, I was way out of line the other day, but I was just caught off guard."
"Didn't coach warn you there was a girl on the team."
    "I thought he was joking."
    Unbelievable.
    "Newsflash not a joke."
"I know. I know. Then I get in there and not only is there a girl but a gorgeous girl at that. Look can we start over?"
Did he just call me gorgeous?
"How do I know you're not just trying to butter me up with that compliment?"
"I never lie to a girl about her being pretty."
    There it was again.
"Fine we can start over. But I swear you better change your attitude on the court with me."
"I promise, you'll come to love me." He started to walk ahead of me. "Everyone does."

    Chapter Three
"Can you believe that kid?" I asked Cam as we walked home from practice. Austin had offically joined the team after todays practice.
"Well Woods you gotta admit despite the attitude, he's pretty dang good." Cam said. I didn't want to admit it but it was the truth. Austin was good. He was really good. And we're not gonna even talk about how good looking he is. But he had a great outside shot but at the same time is tall enough to play the post. I wonder if he'll take Josh's spot or something wait a minute. There were six guys now. Did that mean I was done with the team?
"Cam you realize there's six guys now."
    "Yeah so?"
"So does that mean I'm done with the team?" I was near tears. Just because I did this to help in the beginning, the boys team meant as much to me as the girls team did. And having played with them the past three years was a lot of fun. Challening, but it made me a better player.
"Woods calm down." Cam said slinging an arm around my shoulder. "Austin's been on this team for two minutes. Coach would never do that to you after all you've done for us. Plus I would pick you over Austin Filbin anyday."
"Awww Cam's soft side." I cooed at him. He hated when I joked around about his sensetive side.
"Shut up." He said shoving me away. He didn't lke being seen as anything but the tough guy that everyone else thought he was.And as much as Cams words reassured me, I still had to be sure.
    *********************
"Whats up Woods?" Coach Larson greeted me when I got to school. I asked him to meet me before the girls practice so we could talk before both practices today.
"Um, I just had a question."
    "Shoot."
"Well since the boys now have six does that mean I'm done with the team?"
"Ohh. Well I never thought about that since Austin joined the team." Everything got quiet for a moment and I was on edge of tears again. Finally Coach spoke again. "Well as far I'm concerned you've been on this team longer than Austin so you're first to me. You're staying with us Woods."
    Sweet relief.
"You okay now?" He asked me.
"Yeah." I smiled for the first time since yesterday.
    "Good go practice then."
    ***************************
As th girls practice went on, the boys started to trickle into the hallway.
"Oh.my.god. Who is that?" Our power forward LeeAnn Randerson asked. I didn't even have to look to know who she was talking about. All the other girls looked too.
"Woods who is that?" Center Julie Warchulski asked.
"His names Austin he's new. He's a major jerk."
"It can be overlooked when your that good looking. LeeAnn said. I knew they were all plotting ways to get his attention. I didn't want Austin but why didn't I wany any of my teammates to have him either?

    Chasing Woods
    Chapter Two
    -8th grade Riley-
"Woods! Let's get moving! Captains cannot be late to practice. It sets a bad example." My best friend Cam Stabler yelled to me. Three years ago I decided, I couldn't let the boys team down and decided I would play on their team with them. Thats how I became best friends with Cam Stabler. Baksetball formed some sort of bond in us that we've been inseperable since. I've proved to be a great asset to the boys that they voted me and Cam co-captians for the fianl season. Practices for any sport could start as early as the first week of school, even if school was not in session yet. Thats why we were headed to school now, well actually we were still at my house since I wasn't ready yet.
    "I'm coming, calm yourself."
"Who can be calm when a shot a the state playoffs is on the line this year. I don't want to miss again." He had a point we missed our first run in the state playoffs because we lost our final game of the year in overtime.
"Okay, you're right." I swung my bag onto my shoulder. "Let's go."
Once we made it to school, the door was already unlocked. When we entered the gym a few of the guys were already here.
    "Woods!" They all greeted me.
"Hey what about me?" Cam asked laughing.
"When you're as pretty as Woods you'll get that gretting you ugly monkey." JR said. Cam slugged him as we made way over to the bleachers. The thing about Cam was he was hot and he knew it. He was easily six foot one, dark hair and piercing green eyes. Also he was hands down the best player on our team. We were the perfect combo together on the court, probably the reason we were best friends.
"Where's coach Larson?" I asked Cam.
"Not sure. Gotta be around somewhere. The door was open."
After shooting around for ten minutes, Cam and I decided to take practice into our own hands. We stretched everybody out and started some sprint suicides. Better to get our butts back in shape now. Finally Coach Larson popped his head into the gym.
"Great initiative guys, but can you go sit in the middle? I'll be in, in a minute." He said. The middle was the center of our court with the giant B. We were the Braves and the girls were the Bravettes instead of being called the Lady Braves. Every home game both teams would touch the B right before the start of the game for luck. And if luck wason our side this year, we'd get the state playoff run. Finally Coach Larson walked in and he had someone with him. I felt like someone knocked the wind out of me. He was gorgeous. Easily as tall as Cam, spiky blonde hair and the brightest blue eyes the world had ever seen.
"Everybody, this is Austin Filbin. He's new to the school this year and is interested in joining the basketball team. Why don't you guys introduce yourselves?" Coach Larson said.
    "JR."
    "Fitz."
    "Josh."
    "Fahey."
    "Cam."
    "Woods." Austin's eyes landed me.
"Wait, you're a girl?" Austin was clearly baffled.
    Duh. Captian Obvious.
    "Yeah. So?" I questioned.
"This is a guys team, isn't it?"
"Do you have a problem or something?" It came out sounding as mean as I wanted it to.
"If I do?" He shot right back.
"Listen Filbin. I've been on this team for the last three years and I'm one of the captians. So your attitude better adjust real quick."
Yeah he was gorgeous until he opened his mouth that is.

    Chasing Woods
    Chapter One
    -5th grade Riley-
"Woods!" A voice shouted. I knew that voice anywhere. It was Cam Satbler, the star of the fifth grade boys basketball team. Me and my best friend Allie Ross were shooting around at the park when the boys baketball team had shown up, while five of the player at least. Cam Stabler, JR Medina, Josh Fisher, Brandon Fitzhenry and Fahey, looked like there were joing us.
"Wheres the rest of your team?" I asked them.
"This is it." Brandon Fitzhenry, who we tended to call Fitz said.
"What are you talking about?" Allie asked.
    "Paul, Nick and Ray quit."
"Well they sucked anyways." I said.
"True that may be but now our teams in trouble." JR said.
"Oh wait you guys are all thats left then. I can see the problem here."
"Yeah. Anyways you guys want to play a pick up game?" Cam asked.
    "Sure."
We split up so that it was Cam, me, and Fitz against Allie, JR, Josh and Fahey.
We had been playing for about an hour and next basket would win. Cam had the ball up top, I cut back door behind Josh. "Woods!" he yelled passing me the ball. I easily laid it into the basket. "Wooo! That's game losers."
"I beginning to think we could hold out own with five. Too bad we can't play without six." Fahey said.
"Think we could get another guy to play?" Josh asked.
"Forget it everyone else in our grade is no good. We'd be better off with Woods on our team." JR said.
"That sounds like a good idea actually. Woods you should be on our team." Cam said. I just laughed because never in a million years could this happen. They wouldn't let a girl play on the boys team. Plus the leagues overlapped and there were nights where both teams played.
When I got home that night my mom was setting the table for dinner.
"Is dad home from the metting yet? I asked.
"Just walked in the back door.Go wash up so we can eat." My mom said to me. I trotted off to the bathroom thinking about the boys team and what the committee was going to do about it. It was nice having a direct line to the athletic director since he was my dad.
"Just the girl I wanted to see." My dad said when I sat down at the table.
"Dad I saw some of the guys today. I heard their teams in trouble."
"Yeah, I need to talk to you about that Riley."
    "Why?"
"The committee wants you to join the boys team."

    Chasing Woods
    prologue
    -3 years earlier-
"Well, what are we gonna do?" fifth grade boys basketball coach Kevin Larson asked the athletic committe. It was the first atheltic committe meeting of the year at school. School hadn't actually started yet but getting the athletic teams in order before school started was important. Escpecially tonight since there was worry there would not be a fifth grade boys basketball team for the approaching school year.
"Wait, what happened to all your boys from the fourth grade team last year? Didn't you have eight last year? You mean to tell me three kids quit already?" The committes president and eight grade boys basketball coach, Mike Davila questioned.
"Yeah, I mean it wasn't any of the good kids, but these boys won't have a team with only five."
"Five on the court at a time right?" The varsity soccer coach jumped into the conversation.
"Yeah that won't do any good when a kid is sick or if a kid fouls out. Plus the rule is six kids to a team." Seventh grade girls coach Trish O'Brien said.
"Wait I have an idea," Vice President and sixth grade boys coach Liam McNulty said getting everyones attention. "What about bringing Woods up. Woods is hands down the best player on that team it seems like a good enough solution." The whole room was quiet for the moment.
"I like it." Coach Larson said, "Matt?" Everyone in the room turned and looked at Matt Woods, the athletic director and my father.
"I'm all for it. We'll make it work schedule wise. Fifth grade boys team now has six."
Well that player, Woods, is Riley Woods and and that team Woods is the best player is the fifth grade girls team.

These are my two story ideas let's see what your guys think:
    Chasing Woods
It was crazy enough when fifth grader Riley Woods was asked to play for the boys basketball team. Now she's still with the team in her eighth grade year. Enter transfer Austin Filbin, who never in his life has played on a team with a girl and doesn't intend to start. The problem is the team has a shot at making a run to a state championship, but when the team goes under questioning and investigation, will the team come together or will the emotions between Austin and Riley kill their chances before they even begin?
    Stealing Home
Freshmen Caroline Culliane and Anna Marchetti make the varsity softball team. Caroline becomes the star starting catcher while Anna rides the bench. Anna can't help but be envious of Caroline. Shes get to play and shes best friends with Anna's crush who may or may not be interested in Caroline. All Anna has to do is get Caroline out of the picture. So when Anna has Caroline sidelined she thinks she's did it, that its all over for superstar Caroline Culliane. But when the plan backfires what is Anna going to do now?
