    The Haunting Games
    Chapter Twelve
“What do you mean not all of you are ghosts?” I screamed.
“I mean some of the participants aren’t ghosts. The mortals signed up for the game not knowing what they were getting into. They didn’t know that they’d be assigned to kill someone.” I nodded my head.
“Does that mean you could possibly not be dead?” I asked. No answer. We sat in silence for what felt like forever, well, until it became too awkward.
“Well, lets move on,” Annie said. We all agreed to this. I honestly didn’t want to know if Cory was a mortal or not. It would literally break my heart to know if he was trying to kill me if he was still living.
“So, what else is there?” Cory said.
“We need to know the rest of the victims,” I said.
“Oh, right. Well, I got a list of all the possible victims. There are ten victims. You two, and eight others. Go through this list of twenty people. Eight of them will for sure be victims. Some of them may have already met their death, but I don’t know for sure. Let’s just hope they haven’t.” Cory handed me the list. Mine and Annie’s names were already crossed off, indicating that we were already found.
“Alright, do you want us to start looking today or tomorrow?” I asked.
“Today would be good. I got some stuff to do. Just call me when you’re done. My number is at the bottom.” With that, he disappeared into the thick ring of trees surrounding us. I turned to Annie.
“Well, we better get going before it’s too late,” I said. We turned and walked out of the woods, leaving the scene where I had learned that my best friend could be alive and still tried to kill me. I sped my pace to get in front of Annie and let a silent tear fall. How could this be real? How could my best friend betray my trust like that? Another tear fell and I wiped it away. How stupid could I be, crying over a best friend that could have murdered me. I shook my head at myself. It felt as though I was alone. I turned and I was. Annie was gone.
“Annie!” I yelled. My voice was muffled from crying. “Annie!” I tried to be as loud as possible. I heard a small scream coming from my left and ran all the way there. The sight that I saw was horrifying.
Sorry I haven't posted in a while. I promise I'll work on this as much as possible tomorrow. Hope you liked this chapter(:

    The Haunting Games
    Chapter Eleven
Once we were safe in my house my mom phoned the school saying I’d be out the next few weeks and we had Annie’s mom do the same. We were going to try to put a stop to this game. It was not a good thing. At all. We made a list of all the things we would need to do. The first thing: Find all of the victims before it was too late. We had to talk to Cory. See if he could either find out the other victims, or help us figure it out. We were going to the picnic table later to talk to Cory. We needed to pack some snacks first though. It was going to be a long day trying to figure out the other victims. We chose to pack some granola bars, water bottles and some peanut butter crackers. Once we had enough, we set off.
“Mom, Annie and I are going to the woods!” I shouted.
“Ok, be back before dark.” After that, we walked out of the house and into the bug-filled woods.
“What do you want me to do if he tries to kill you while we’re out here?” Annie asked, her teeth chattering because of the cold.
“He won’t. He said he’s been trying to get the game cancelled. That’s another thing. We need to find out who’s running the game from him.”
“Oh.” The rest of the walk was in complete silence.
“What took you guys so long?” Cory asked as he saw us walked up to him.
“Cory!” Annie screamed running up and tackling him into a giant bear hug. He fell to the floor and hugged her back.
“Hey Annie, I missed you,” Cory said, laughing.
“I missed you too!” She said. They both got back up and brushed themselves off.
“So, we need all of the information about the game you can give us,” I said.
“Well, be specific,” Cory answered. Everyone suddenly became much more serious.
“We need to know everything you know.”
“Well, for starters not all of us are ghosts.” My jaw dropped open.
Sorry I haven't posted in a while. I promise I'll work on this as much as possible tomorrow. Hope you liked this chapter(:

    The Haunting Games
    Chapter Ten
“I can’t tell you. You’ll find out eventually though. I promise.” We walked for a few minutes in silence, and I tried to figure out the truth.
“Who else is going to be killed?” I asked, looking straight into his eyes.
“I can honestly say I don’t know. I know that they’re either people in our school or the middle school,” he said, turning his head away.
“You mean there’s a chance Annie will be killed?” Annie was this seventh grader who I loved like a little sister. It would kill me inside if she was one of the victims. She was blonde haired, blue eyed. She looked like me in the seventh grade, except her eyes are ocean blue. Mine are icy blue.
“I don’t know. I’ve been trying to find out, because she’s too young and innocent.”
“I know. Are you saying I’m not innocent as well though?” I asked.
“No. I’ve been avoiding trying to hurt you. I’m trying to figure out a way to get the game cancelled. At first I figured it would be fun, but then I saw how nice you were to me in the hospital. I hadn’t thought you even cared about me anymore. So I was going along with the game because I thought you forgot about me.”
“Cory, you were my best friend, there’s no way I forgot about you,” I said, turning him and looking in his eyes again. We stop walking and sat down at the picnic tables. “Well, I think I’m going to leave. I’m going to find out if Annie has seen anything… unusual.”
“Okay. Take her back to you’re house if she has,” he warned.
“I will.” I turned and started to walk away, but remembered something. “And don’t forget, you promised.” He nodded his head committing it to memory. After, I walked without turning back.
Once I was out of the woods I walked in my house.
“Hey mom, I’m going to Annie’s,” I called blindly into the house. I waited for a few minutes without a response then grabbed a banana and walked out. It was only a ten-minute walk to her house. When I got the I rang the doorbell. After a minute Annie came to the door.
“Hey Alex, come on in.” I followed her up two flights of stairs to her room. Once we were in it, she closed the door and sat on her bed.
“So, what brings you here?” She asked, her blue eyes looking up at me.
“Well, I needed to ask you about something.”
    “Yeah, what is it?”
“Have you been seeing weird things lately?” I asked. She cocked her head to the side and thought about it.
“Well, actually, yeah. I have this feeling that I’m being watched and sometimes at night I see a face in my window. I always look, but the face is never there. It disappears. It really creeps me out,” she says. “Why?”
“Annie, you’re going to have to come with me. Pack a bag. I’ll call my mom.”
    Slow chapter, excitment later(:

    The Haunting Games
    Chapter Nine
After I finished my thoughts, I went off to bed.
I woke up the next morning, Saturday, immediately. I got dressed in my favorite hoodie, a t-shirt, and some jeans. I raced down stairs in time to see my parents and brother.
“What you in a rush for?” My mom asked. They all looked at me.
“Oh, um, I was going to take another walk. Just need lots more fresh air,” I said.
“Okay, but take an umbrella. It’s supposed to rain in twenty minutes.” With that, I was out the door. I was headed back to the woods to talk to Cory about what he meant by what he said. As soon as I was out, I took off for the woods. On my way, I ran into him.
“Hey, watch it!” He yelled. “Oh, Alex. Hi.”
    “Hey,” I said.
“What are you doing back here?”
“I needed to talk to you.”
    “About?”
“What did you mean yesterday, when you said that this was all a game?”
    “Long story.”
“I’ve got all day.” I looked over and saw him cringe. He didn’t want me to know.
“What do you think it means?”
“Well, there’s obviously something you’re hiding from me, but I think you and a bunch of other people’s dead friends are going around try to kill them and whoever kills their best friend in the most creative, painful way, wins.” He cringed again.
“How did you figure it out?” He asked, completely surprised.
“I thought about all the possible things, and that was the most practical. There’s no way you’re jealous of me. You were the popular one. I lived in you’re shadows.”
“I know, I said that to distract you from finding the truth of me.”
    “What truth?”
Oooo(: what's the truth gonna be?

    The Haunting Games
    Chapter Eight
“Well, I asked him why he lied. He said he didn’t want me to freak out.”
    “Anything else?”
“I asked him why he didn’t try to kill me in my sleep.”
    “And what did he say?”
“He said that the game wouldn’t be as fun like that,” I said. After that there was silence on the phone.
“I wonder what he meant by ‘the game’.”
“Yeah, I wish I could have asked him.”
    “Why didn’t you?”
“Because he disappeared after that. I should probably go. It’s almost dinner time,” I said.
“Ok, bye,” she said. I hung up the phone and slid to the floor. My parents didn’t know I talked to Cory. I wasn’t going to tell them either.
At dinner we had a nice spaghetti dinner. I sat in between my dad and Scott, across from my mother. It was a quiet dinner. No one brought up the incident from a month ago, Cory, or the hospital. We rarely talked and we all broke off in our separate ways one by one. Eventually I was the only one there. Just picking at my food. Eating as slow as possible. I thought about everything then, being completely alone. I thought of the possible ways Cory meant by ‘the Game’. My first thought was he was racing someone, to see who could kill me first. Soon after it occurred to me that no one else had come after me, so I gave up on that. My final decision was that maybe there were other people being killed right this moment by their dead friends, and the game was to kill them in the most creative, painful way possible.
Sorry if it's too short, just wanted to post something today(:

    The Haunting Games
    Chapter Seven
Within a few weeks I was back at home doing all my usual things. My memory had been completely restored using a bunch of cool games and people telling me everything. Cory was my almost murderer. He’s dead. He didn’t move back. This was all so hard to understand. Cory was my best and only friend. When he moved away I forced myself to make other friends. I hadn’t seen Cory since the day I woke up in the hospital. I was all confused that day. I wanted to talk to him, I needed to talk to him again. So, that’s why when I came home from school on Friday, I told my parents I was going to go for a long walk. I didn’t. I walked straight into the woods. I had a flashlight for if darks falls and my phone in case of an emergency. I kept walking until I reached the picnic bench where I finally sat down. I just sat there. Played with my fingers, waited. He would be there soon. When he still lived here he came everyday. After about fifteen minutes, a shadow emerged from the forest slowly, revealing a face. It was Cory; the only other person who knew about this place.
“What are you doing here?” He asked.
    “Waiting for you,” I replied.
    “Why?”
“I need to talk to you. About that day in the hospital.” His eye’s fluttered then filled with guilt.
    “Yeah, what is it?”
    “You lied to me. Why?”
“So you wouldn’t freak out in the room. I figured you’d remember somehow, I just didn’t want you to there.” I eyed him. Got up, walked around him in a circle.
“And why didn’t you try to kill me in my sleep?” I pushed.
“Well then the game wouldn’t be that fun,” He said with a sly smile. With that, he was gone.
When I was back at home, I called my closest friend, Riley. Ever since Cory moved, she’s been sort of like a filler, except she doesn’t know everything about me.
“Hello?” She said into the phone, her voice tired and bored.
“I just talked to Cory,” I said plainly.
“You did? What about?” Her voice sprang up, became more excited.

    The Haunting Games
    Chapter Six
I woke up in a hospital bed. I sat up and looked around to take in my surroundings and my eyes found Cory, at the end of my bed. He was smiling. I looked around and noticed no one else was there. Cory cares, I thought. I smiled back at him.
“Cory, what are you doing here? I thought you moved to England last year,” I said.
“You don’t remember?” He said, smile still plastered on his face.
“No, and stop smiling, it’s sort of creepy.” He laughed.
“I moved back last month. I’ve been staying with my dad,” he lied. I didn’t know he was lying. I had memory loss for the hit I had taken to the head. I couldn’t remember the past month and a half.
“Oh. Well, I’m glad you’re back. I really missed being able to talk to you,” I said. He smiled.
“You should probably get some rest. You took a pretty hard hit in the head last week.” I listened, and closed my eyes. Within minutes, I was asleep. Dreaming what had really happened.
Cory was in front of me. I was in the bathroom, standing in nothing but an ocean blue towel. I was back at my house. I had just been pulled from the shower in curiosity of why he was there.
“Turn around, I have to get dressed,” I instructed. He did as told and put his ghostly nose to the corner. When I was finally done I told him he was okay.
“I guess you do understand, Alex,” he sneered. He held something behind his back and I couldn’t tell what it was. He came closer and I screamed. He took another step and pulled from behind his back the plunger. Then he wacked me in the head with it and I fell to the floor. My eyes were shut as I lay unconscious on the floor. My dad came running up the stairs while Cory got rid of any evidence and disappeared right when my had come in.
    I woke in a panic.

    The Haunting Games
    Chapter Five
The next morning was uneventful. I woke up all sweaty, so I went and took a shower. My nightmare was horrible. It was everything that I would have never thought would happen to me and now it is. While I was in the shower, I sat down and let the warm water hit against my back. I just sat and thought, thought about the past twenty-four hours. How confusing everything was. I was almost killed, by a ghost. This was too weird.
“How is this happening?” I wondered aloud. I had never believed in ghosts until yesterday. I hadn’t even known Cory died, and now he’s trying to kill me.
“Well, I guess society just wasn’t meant for you,” Said a voice. I stood up, turned off the shower and grabbed a towel. I wrapped it around me, quickly as possible. It was Cory. I opened my mouth and let out a small scream. I heard someone walking up the stairs calling my name.
“Alex, are you okay?” My dad said. Cory shook his head that yes, I was okay.
    “Yeah, I just slipped.”
“Okay,” my dad said. I turned to Cory.
“What do you want, Cory?” I asked.
    “I want you to understand.”
“I understand, you’re somehow jealous and you want me to die. Now turn away, I have to get dressed.” I watch him turn to face the corner and I throw my clothes on.
“Well, I guess you do understand.” He came closer to me, I let out a scream. He took one last step closer, and everything went black.

    Chapter Four
“Hi Mrs. Parks. I was wondering if I could talk to you about Cory,” I said.
“Why, Cory died last month. He was in a terrible accident at the subway station down the block.”
“That’s what I wanted to talk about. I’ve been seeing him. He’s harmed me.”
“I’m not sure I’m following sweetie.”
“He’s a ghost that’s haunting me. He’s tried to kill me. I police are beginning observation of everything next week.” There was a silence on the other line.
“Oh sweetie. I am so terribly sorry. I don’t believe in ghosts. You’re probably just hallucinating.”
“No! I’m not, come back to New Mexico. I’ll prove to you. Buy a one-way ticket and go home whenever you feel like it. Cory’s only going to get worse.” There was a buzz on the other line. She hung up on me.
“What did she say?” My mom said, poking her head in before she walked all the way in.
“She didn’t believe me.” For about another hour we all just sat there, not knowing what to do. We soon all decided to go to bed, and before we did my mom helped set up an air mattress in my room for Scott. Before long, we were all asleep.
“You’re so foolish, Alex. Of course my mother wouldn’t believe you; she’s still grieving. You’re not going to win this battle, I can assure you of that,” Cory said. He had invaded my dreams, my head, my personal thoughts.
“Cory, please, I don’t understand. We were best friends. I never wanted you to feel like any of this,” I begged.
“It’s too late. Now I’m gone and back. And there’s nothing you can do to get rid of me.” Cory took a few steps forward then punched me in the stomach. I fell to the floor, clutching my stomach in pain. Tears were pouring over my eyelids.
“Please. Please don’t do this. Please!” I screamed. Nothing would help. He kicked me in the face.
“I will do anything to make sure no one will ever hear from poor, little Miss Alex again.” I was gasping for air. I couldn’t see. It was like I was trapped in the darkness, but not alone. In front of me was the nightmare I wanted to get rid of, the nightmare that I used to call my best friend.

    Chapter Three
Later that night I was in my room writing in my journal about the day’s events. Scott was in my room with me, playing video games on his laptop.
“Hey, I’ll be right back, I got to go to the bathroom,” he said. He got up and headed to the bathroom. I put one of my headphones in and started listening to some music. I was scared. I didn’t wish to be alone but Scott and I were the only ones awake. Outside in the hallway, I heard footsteps coming up the stairs. I pulled myself out of bed and peeked my head out of the door.
“Scott?” I said into the dark. No answer. I shrugged it off and went back in my room, closing the door behind me. Once I was back and settled in bed, my door swung open, not even making a sound. I turned, expecting to see Scott, but nothing was there. I heard footsteps coming towards me.
“Who’s there?” I asked. Suddenly there was a figure, just a shadow looking thing.
“Why, don’t you remember me?” said a voice. It sounded as Cory’s voice had. I started breathing hard and fast out of fear.
    “I can’t remember you if I don’t see you.”
“You saw me in the bathroom, don’t you remember?”
“Yes. You looked like one of my old friends. Cory.”
“That’s exactly who I am,” the voice said. My eyes widened.
“Cory, why did you try to murder me?” Cory’s face showed, then the rest of him. His clothes were ragged.
“Why, don’t you remember? You were always the teacher’s favorite. It was always about you. You were even my mother’s favorite. And now I’m dead and I want as much regret as I can get.” Cory took a few steps forward, and then punched my face. I screamed of the pain. There was running down the hall, three different pairs of feet were all coming for me. Cory disappeared through the window and my family came through the door. I was holding my hand up to my eye. That’s where he hit.
“What the hell happened?” Scott said. I looked up, tears streaming down my face.
“Cory. H-he’s the g-ghost. He did this,” I said, revealing my eye.
“Alright, I’ll go get some ice. Alex, call his mom,” my mom said. I got out my cell phone and made a call to Cory’s mom.
“Hi Alex, what are you doing up so late? I’m sure it’s near midnight where you are,” Cory’s mom said.
Hope you like it(: more later?

    The Haunting Games
    Chapter Two
My parents walked in and I ran out and clutched them as close to me as possible. I explained everything that happened. They didn’t believe me, until they saw the bruises. They took me home and tended to my every need. I was never in a room alone unless I was in the bathroom. Even then, someone was right outside the door. When Scott, my brother, walked through the door my mom called everyone to a ‘family meeting’ in the living room.
“Hey, what’s Alex doing home so early?” Scott asked. I was about to explain but instead my mom just turned on the news. There I was, right next to the interviewer. I was pale, the typical look for someone who’d seen a ghost. The interviewer asked about the whole thing, and I explained. When the interview was done, they interviewed a few teachers, the principal, asked what went through their head when I screamed. After was another talk with me, they asked what went through my head. At the end, they asked if I would be comfortable enough to show them my bruises. I showed them. Scott turned and looked at me. My mom clicked the T.V. off and turned to all of us.
“Now, no one knows who or what it was that did this to Alex, but she cannot be alone anymore, in this house, in this school, anywhere. Scott, would you be okay with sharing a room with Alex? Just until this clears up?” my mom said, looking towards Scott. I looked at Scott as well, hopeful that he would, so I wouldn’t have to experience anything in my sleep.
“I guess. So wait, she was nearly killed, by a shadow on the wall?” he answered.
“We don’t know what did it. We just don’t want it to happen again.” My dad said.

I was so terrified turning every corner after that day. The news had ended up coming to do a big report on it. I was interviewed. They wanted every single detail. I described the face. Long, haunting, thin. The eyes were dark, had dark circles underneath. The lips were thin, had a welcoming smile. The kind of smile that shouldn’t belong to a killer. The hair, the hair was messy. A dark, dark mess. They had searched the school for anything while I was being calmed down. I was super shaky about the whole thing. The crazy thing was, the ghost resembled one of my old friends, Cory. There’s no way it was Cory though, because he moved to England last year. I was going to call him the second I got in my house. My parents had been called to take me home. They told me they would excuse me for the next week, just so I could get back in order. I knew one thing for sure: I was sleeping in my older brother’s room from now on. Whether he wanted me to or not.

    The Haunting Games
    Preface
I was in the school’s bathroom fixing my hair. I carefully slid my new, black headband into place then smiled at my reflection. I looked great. All of a sudden, the bathroom went dark.
“Someone’s just messing with me,” I told myself. I looked in the mirror again; there was a figure behind me.
“That’s just a shadow,” I reassured myself. I turned to get a better look at it. There was a face now. The first thing to enter my mind was the word ghost. I wanted to scream, but I didn’t want to. I opened my mouth to, but the ghost put their finger to their lip. It took a few steps toward me until it was about a foot away. I looked it in the eyes. It reached out and grabbed my neck, squeezing harder and harder every second. I let out a loud scream. It tried to cover my mouth, but couldn’t. I heard footsteps and turned to the door right when the first person ran in. I turned back to where the ghost had been, but it was gone. I had tears in my eyes.
“What happened Alex?” asked my homeroom teacher, Mrs. Jackson.
“I-I was in here, fixing my hair, then the lights went out. I figured it was someone messing with me, but then there was a figure. It had a face. It told me to be quiet and it grabbed my neck,” I said.
“Why Alex, this is no time to joke around,” Mrs. Jackson scolded me. She was sterner now.
“But I’m not.” I pulled back the long brown hair that covered my neck, revealing bruises that had appeared.
    Hope you like it(:
