Introduction
Today I woke up smiling. I had yet another enticing dream of you and me and all that we had. I stare at the ceiling trying to waste time and clear the thoughts of you. Unfortunately that is impossible for today is your birthday. Looking out the window on the right I see everything that you were. The sun shines so brightly blinding, it makes me recall the day we met, and how perfectly imperfect you were. The most surreal thing I’ve ever seen, I curse myself for looking at you as a negative right away. There’s a breeze blowing in through the screen and I am deeply reminded of your wisdom. Your genuine compassion for life and people, and how you saw beauty in me when I only saw a nuisance in you, it still brings me shame. I still feel guilt for wasting my time and misjudging you on that very first day, even now when five desolate years have passed. I know Sky will be coming in soon to make sure I didn’t forget him. All week he’s been saying how excited he was to see you today. I glance out the window one more time while I get dressed; I just want to soak up all that you were. Any day before you I wouldn’t see any significance in the birds chirping their morning songs. Or the fires in the sky that a sunrise creates and when you look into the fading orange and fierce pink that makes a person feel so small and grateful. I owe you for releasing me of ignorance and giving me the eyes to finally see life.
“Daddy Come on! I want to go now!” Sky shouted as he scurried into the room and started tugging on my pant leg the way toddlers do.
“Alright, you ready bud?” I said with a smile while picking up my beautiful Sky, so he wouldn’t be able to detect any hint of morose in my voice. Today is a joyous day for him since he can’t remember her. He likes to tell her all about himself like he’s making a new friend. I put Sky down and pick up the lilies I bring every year on her birthday. We head out the door and all I can think about is our first encounter meant. When she looked me in the eye and told me to smile while holding out an identical lily in her hand.
