    Angels Hide Demons
    Chapter 4
"Rowan Talley, Period 4." I dotted the i and slid my finished English homework into a binder, then closed up my backpack. My phone buzzed, and I pounced on it like a wild cat. It was Brayden.
    "Hello?"
"Hey, Rowan. I heard you know-"
"Where you were today? Don't worry; I won't tell." Because I might die if I do.
"Thanks. So what did I miss in Science?"
"Nothing interesting. We watched a video about biodiversity in Madagascar; no notes, no homework."
    "Really?"
"It's because we all got A's on the Chapter 7 Test."
"Cool. Well, thanks again. I gotta go."
    "Okay; bye."
I snapped my phone shut and gave a sigh of relief. Brayden was okay. So, what did they do today?
I decided to go to bed early, since anything else I did would most likely put me in a bad mood. Scrolling through Facebook on my phone, I found this really unusual stream of friendly messages- from Alaia. WTF was this?! In my private messenger, I typed back:
Alaia, I know that we used to be friends. But we're not anymore. Not after what you did a year ago. I'm sorry but I just can't forgive you. If you want things to be the way they used to be, well, that won't happen unless you find yourself a time machine. And what was up with this afternoon?
She never replied to the message.

Okie Dokie, guys. This was a super-short chapter because I have a few author's notes for you. First of all, the layout. I have a couple things to adress about the formatting. One, if you can't already see it, the title and chapter number are supposed to be written in this really pretty script font, which isn't normally available on Witty (I coded it in). I found out yesterday that the font doesn't show up on mobile, and it also is written as Comic Sans (this font) on certain computer monitors. I just really hope that you guys can all see it, because I love it. In addition, do you like the current formatting? Is it too plain? Any suggestions? If you have an idea in mind, go ahead and comment. I love to get feedback from you guys.
Formatting/Layouts/HTML/CSS Coding aside, what do you guys think of the story so far? This is the first story I've put out there that isn't fanfiction. (BTW don't look me up because the fanfic I write is absolute garbage) I'll take any and all constructive criticism you guys can provide. I think that's about it.
Oh, one more thing! If anyone wants me to notify them when I post new chapters, comment on this or my profile and I'll do that for you, from now on. I'm already notifying EpicTrouble and skittlepringle.
    THANKS FOR READING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Chapter 3
    Rowan's outfit: http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/set?id=88424956
When I kissed my dad's cheek and stepped out of his beat-up Honda, Something felt... different. Not necessarily bad, just different. The first thing I noticed was Brayden- rather, his abscence. Normally, we would talk for a while before school, and then walk to our first period (we had the same class) together. Today, for some reason, I couldn't find him anywhere. Weird, but why should I freak myself out? It's not like he had to tell me everytime he was out of school. He could be sick, or maybe something popped up at the last minute. Yeah, that was it. Right?

"Also, if we all ate less meat, the obesity rate in America could decrease by..." In all honesty, I was listening to Tasha Silver's report about going vegan and its benefits to animals and the economy, but something more important came up. Alaia was absent, too. I didn't even give it a second thought until I started daydreaming- which almost always puts images in my mind of the day Alaia... where was she?

"They skipped? Together?!" I nearly spit out my chocolate milk as Liberty nodded her head solemnly.
"See, Ro? It hurts when someone tries to take your crush away from you." Scarlett smirked.
"It's not about that. It's..." about Alaia being a psycho murderer, but I would never say that. "Well, maybe it is about that. It's just not a good idea to do something like that, in general."
"Duh! That's kind of why it's against the law." Liberty sarcastically shrugged and opened a tube of GoGurt. "They'll be fine, Ro."
    "I hope you're right."
After school, I had to drop some books off at my locker. The halls were oddly quiet today. It seemed eerie, creepy, almost scary. I turned my combination and the lock seemed to squeak more than usual. I thought I heard footsteps, but there was nobody left in the hallway. All of a sudden, the power went out. I'm talking total, pitch-black, can't-see-your-hand-in-front-of-you darkness. I blindly felt around my open locker, shoving the books in wherever they would fit. I pulled my hand back momentarily as the dim emergency lights flickered on, and the locker door slammed shut. I turned around, and there was Alaia- whispering my name with a knife in her hand.
It felt like a smack in the face and getting the air sucked out of my body by a vacuum, at the same time. Alaia placed her hands firmly below my shoulders and shoved me into the locker. She pressed the tip of the knife blade gently to my skin, and teasingly traced my cheek with it. She walked me through the hallway with the other hand around the back of my neck. I swayed beneath her grip, searching dizzily for a way out.
"What do you want?" I asked bravely.
"We meet again, Rowan," She cackled, as if my question had never been asked. "You seem to know something about that Brayden...?" Was that supposed to be a question?
"Whatdya wanna know?" I questioned, pushing the knife away from my face. She put it right back where it was, almost breaking my skin.
"I want you to promise that you won't say a word. That means you won't tell anyone, not even your stupid little friends, where Brayden and I were today. Or else." We were out of the school building, and at the edge of the campus woods. She ran her fingers along the metal blade. I gulped.
"I promise," I said weakly, feeling my body go limp. She let go of me and I fell to my knees. When the world finally stopped spinning, I ran home as fast as lightning. She was at it again.

    Chapter 2
"Brayden?!?" Scarlett squealed, but Liberty rolled her eyes.
    "He's an idiot."
"A cute idiot," I shrugged. "Plus, he's my friend."
"For now! I heard he's trying out for the basketball team next year. Maybe I could get Jake to-"
    "Scarlett," we both groaned.
"Jake barely knows you," I finished. "Enough about him." My boy-crazy friend pouted while Liberty steered the conversation back onto the main road. Between the three of us, about half a pack of Oreos was gone.
"When did you start liking Brayden?"
"I don't really know. Couple months ago, maybe."
"Studies show that a traditionally concieved 'crush' can only last three months, tops. Hurry up and snag him before it's over." Of all the random scientific facts that Liberty throws out there, this one was actually kind of useful. Kind of. The more important thing was to "snag" him before Alaia did, or this could be dangerous for him- and possibly me. Of course, my friends didn't need to know that.
"So, I've got a question for you, Ro," Liberty continued. "Whenever I mention Alaia, people always seem to point me back to you. Do you know her?"
"I, uh... we used to hang out. Actually, we were pretty close friends for about 2 years."
"When did that end?" Ugh, not this. Anything but this. I blocked out the flashbacks and gave them my usual made-up schpeel.
"Well, she hacked my Facebook, Twitter, all that. Posted some really embarassing stuff; wrote rude messages to my other friends. I almost lost a few people over it." A few people. Try everyone, myself, my life.
They didn't have much to say after that, thankfully. We played some video games; looked at funny videos online, then went to bed. I wish I had known to prepare myself for Monday.

    Angels Hide Demons
    Chapter 1
    "Rowan, your friends are here!"
    "Coming, mom!"
I slipped on my denim-colored sneakers and raced to the front door, where Liberty and Scarlett were waiting with smiles on their faces. Today was Saturday, and also our monthly sleepover. This month, February, it was at my house.
I ushered my friends up to my room to put their bags down, and then we went to our huge multi-purpose room, which had a couch, a few board games, and a huge TV. It was really only used for the sleepovers and other parties. As we rolled out our sleeping bags, I listened to Scarlett's long, agitated rant about some girl in her English class.
"And then she snatched the pencil right out of my hand and gave it to Jake for me! If she gets in the way of our relationship-"
"Scarlett," Liberty cut in, "what relationship are you talking about? You're lucky if Jake even knows your name." We knew about her huge crush on Jake, who was on the basketball team, but I had no idea who this mystery girl was. So, against my better judgement, I asked. This cued a second rant.
"Alaia Garner. She can have any guy she wants, and she has to go for Jake?!"
"Jeez, Scarlett, all she did was give him a pencil." Liberty had always been the sensible one. Scarlett... not so much.
"Maybe you're right. But what if she tries something else? Something like... writing him love letters, or taping her photo to his locker? What if she likes him, too?"
"That's not going to happen. You're definitely overreacting." This time, the words of wisdom came out of my mouth. And Liberty agreed. Although, I was slighty worried. Not about Jake, but about Alaia.
"Can we maybe talk about something else?" I offered. "You guys like Uno, right?" I grabbed the small box of the bookshelf and dumped out the cards. Thankfully, it was enough to end the conversation.

    Prologue
She's beautiful. She's popular. She's smart. She's funny. She's... perfect. Alaia seems to be just what all the guys want. Or, at least, what they think they want. My name is Rowan, and clearly I'm the only one paying enough attention to know that Alaia isn't who she says she is.
We were best friends. We helped each other plan our weddings, our funerals, heck, we even divised a few brilliant-yet-sneaky plans to meet our favorite celebrities. We worked together on school projects. We shared gossip, clothes, music, and everyone thought we were a perfect team. What happened? No, it wasn't an argument over something stupid, like shoes, a boy, or a Facebook post. It had nothing to do with popularity. Exactly one year from today, Alaia Jordyn Garner tried to kill me. And I know exactly who she'll go after next...
