Red String of Fate
Chapter 14
At the station, Inspector McGuire picked up his phone. “Hello?”
“It’s me, Jimmy Kudo,” Jimmy said. Inspector McGuire exclaimed, “Kudo!
We’ve been waiting for you!” At the mention of Jimmy’s name, Richard scowled.
Jimmy, on the other line, replied, “I heard everything from Professor Agasa and
I’ve figured it out. The bombs are in between the rails.” “Between the rails?!”
Inspector McGuire said. Jimmy continued, “The bombs are set so that if there’s no light
for a certain number of seconds, they will explode. When the trains pass over the bombs,
the light is obstructed for a few seconds. If the trains don’t run for at least 60 km/h,
the light will be obstructed for too long and the bomb will explode.
Therefore, please divert the trains on the Circular Line to a different track right away.
Once they’re off the Circular Line tracks, there will be no danger of an explosion.”
Inspector McGuire said, “Got it.” He ordered the station chief to transfer the trains
to a different track. Each train had been successfully diverted and the passengers
were able to get off. George, Amy, and Mitch happily bounded off the train.

A little later, the inspector ordered bomb specialists and officers to find
the five bombs in the rails. Each bomb was located and defused.
Back at the hospital, the Inspector shook his head and said,
“It’s too early to celebrate. It seems the bombs only contained a quarter
of the stolen explosives. So that means the culprit still has the remaining
three fourths of the bombs.” Everyone sighed. Jimmy asked, “By the way,
where were the bombs located exactly?” The Inspector said,
“Well, around regular residential areas...
Oh, right, one was on the top of a bridge on the Summit Canal.”
On top of a bridge? Jimmy wondered. The professor pointed to a picture
shown on the news on TV. “Isn’t it that one?” he said. Wait,
I saw this picture in the Mort Gallery, Jimmy thought.
“Hey, didn’t Tim Mort design this bridge?” he said.
Richard glanced at the TV and said, “Eh? It is!”
A different news story came up on TV, showing a house burning up in flames.
Jimmy thought, Huh? This building was designed by Tim Mort as well!
Can’t be a coincidence. A news reporter announced, “Regarding the serial arson case, we...”
Richard turned off the TV, saying, “Enough of this, it’s driving me insane.”
Jimmy said, “Hey, I wonder who designed the other buildings
that were damaged in the serial arson case. You should check!
You might find something interesting.”
Mr. Santos said, “Very interesting, indeed.”
