Eyes Open

God that was way too much cleaning.
We split up the chores and it still took us about five hours.
Jacob had woken up still a little shaken from what had happened
earlier but it seemed he was hungrier than fearful.
Douglass got up from the couch and made a makeshift pot
hanger over the fireplace and started making soup with some
veggetables he'd picked up earlier. It smelled so good along
with the candles that surrounded us. By the time it was done,
Jacob was jumping for a bite. I set the coffee table and Douglass
poured the soup and we finished within just a few minutes.
"Thanks Douggy, that was good!" Jacob happily exclaimed
with a small burp.
Douglass laughed and nodded then went to sit on the couch to
rest. He looked at his watch and sighed, "It's almost 1
am, kiddo. You need to go to bed." His green hair hung over
his eyes and he scratched his stubly beard.
"Yeah, Jake. Douggy's right. Its way passed your bed
time." I added, getting up and getting a blanket and pillow
to make a bed on the old couch. I patted the spot and Jacob
crawled and curled up with his head on my lap. I couldn't
help but smile at how cute he was.
"I don't think thats a pillow, bud." Doug said with
a little high-pitched laugh.
"Yeah but Natawie's warm and comfy." He replied,
obviously exhausted.
"It's okay. But you have to go to sleep." I said
smoothing the little boy's blonde hair and throwing the
blanket over him.
He snuggled himself closer to me and yawned, "On ooone
condition."
Doug's eyebrow rose, "Condition?"
Jacob nodded, "Sing me a song, pleeease?"
Jacob gave Doug an on-key puppydog face and Doug's eyes
widened, "I song. Me. Sing?"
Jacob nodded and smiled under the blanket, "Yes."
Doug sighed and thought for a moment, "Okay, I will. Now
close your eyes and just relax."
"Okay." Jacob obeyed and curled up to me.
Doug got up and looked at me and whispered, "I'll be
right back." He went off into a room and retrieved an old
acoustic guitar, covered in dust. He tuned it and blew the dust
off then knelt down in front of me and Jacob who was twitching
with excitment. He smiled, "Ready?"
Jacob nodded and so did i. I wanted to hear this.
Doug nodded. He half smiled, again, and whipped the green hair to
the side. Its weird, he never spiked it up as far as I've
seen. He doesn't give off the threatening look to me. When he
knocked out Jacob's father in the alley, I saw how dangerous
he could be. But he wasn't. And he flinched
when I lightly slapped him, like a scared little puppy. He gave
off this sarcastic and "badboy" demener but he
wasn't any of that. Besides sarcastic. He has a story.
Doug began to play soft notes with his fingertips for awhile and
I felt myself start to become drowzy. Jacob yawn and smiled at
Doug, who smiled right back. Then, after a few soft notes, the
soothing melody was accompanied by a soft, high voice. It sent
shivers up my spine and Jacob began to smile wide and snuggle
closer to me. Doug didn't look at me or Jacob. He closed his
eyes and occasionally looked at the positioning of his fingertips
to change chords. I felt tired but happy...
"I don't mind it, I don't mind if you're
overrated
Or if you're staring at the edge of the world.
Keep in mind that I'm a sore eye with blurry vision.
But I can see it has to be your love that I've been dreaming
of.
And if we climb this high, I swear we'll never die...
I'll never die."
