Chapter 1
Pt. 2

Walking into Sally's Diner, I was welcomed with the familiar chime of the bell. The diner was still empty, but the rush was sure to come in a few hours after we opened. The only people their were the cooks, and the other waitress Amy, Amy and I have been working here for ages together and we slowly developed a bond that only comes around once in while. She really my only friend and I trusted her with my life. I quickly hung up my coat and put in my work card into the machine before setting it back down. Just as I was going into the kitchen, I heard a call

"Jaime!" I turned to see Amy running over in her uniform. Her long, red hair was tied in a messy bun. Her face was nicely done up making her look more gorgeous than she already was. She needed this job in order to support her grandparents who took her and her brothers in after their parents died from cancer.

She was the only one that I had ever confided in about my father, but the part about him beating us was left out of the conversation.

She smiled warmly at me, and embraced me in a hun, the smell of pancakes lingering on her.

"Hey" I said giving her a tired smile.

"Jaime Evans!" she said waving her finger at me. "How do you manage to look so gorgeous at 6 in the morning!"

I laughed shaking my head. I was far from being even remotely pretty. My deep green eyes and chocolate brown hair didn't tend to stand out of a crowd. My petite body was nothing to obsess over, with my average sized waist and legs. The only thing I liked about myself was my natural talent to sing. It was the only way that helped me get through all the pain and suffering. Along the way, I picked up playing the piano and have been playing since.

"Very funny Amy. My hair looks like a bird could make a nest out of it, and I haven't slept in days!" I said laughing.

Her expression softened at the realization, understanding the reason why I haven't gotten much sleep. This is why I loved her, we could communicate and understand each other without even talking.

"You know that you can always come stay with me." she said giving me a tight smile. She always got like this when talking about my father, but I reassured her that one day, me and Ally would move out.

"You know I couldn't burden you with me and Ally"

"You should at least come over for a visit! The boys are dying to meet you" she said laughing.

I gave her a small smile, but said nothing. We started to get ready for the day; setting the tables, opening the curtains, and brewing the coffee.

The day began as usual, customers flowing in and out of the diner, piles of dishes in the sink, half eaten lunches on the table. My mood seemed to get better as the day went on; a stranger had left a 20 dollar tip and I hadn't managed to burn myself all day. I found myself humming to the soft jazz playing into the background as I wiped down tables.

As I was cleaning the counter, I heard the door ring and a bustle of people coming in. I didn't turn around assuming Amy would cover it, but she soon ran into the kitchen with a handful of dishes that looked like she got all wrong. She gave me a helpless look, and I returned a reassuring glance telling her I would handle it. She gave me a grateful smile before running into the kitchen shouting orders as she went. I sighed turning around to look at the clock reading a half hour before the day was over. My eyes scanned across the customers already taken care of to the new group seated only to have a sudden panic as I recognized who they were.

In all their fame and glory, sat Stacy Lambert, Lexi Magilis, Andre Collins, and my eyes finally landed on him. He was the head of the pack, girls fell to his knees as he walked, and I'm pretty sure if he stepped in a pile or crap, girls would line up to clean his shoe. Gross right? There he was. Jake Stevens, undeniably hot, douche bag.

We'd been in multiple classes since the seventh grade but I was nothing more to him than scum on his shoe. He'd had his way around the girls in my grade but hadn’t managed to reach my level of unpopularity. I was a nobody to them, just someone who sat alone at lunch, always missing a partner in class, never having a friend. Unfortunately, Amy was a year older than me and already attended college leaving me to suffer one more year of high school.

Sh*t, sh*t, sh*t, sh*t. What are they doing here?!? Oh my god, what am I going to do?! Okay, breathe, Jaime, breathe.

I took a deep breath, trying to contemplate what to do. All the waitresses were busy with other tables, and I seemed to be the only one available. For 6 years, I've managed to avoid any contact with any of them, and now I'd have to confront them face to face, I hate my life. I decided after for years of hiding, I was going to do just that. I spun on my heels and quickly made my way to the kitchen. As I was opening the door, I heard him. His voice rang out so sweet in my ears.

"Hey!" Waitress!"

sh*t.

I turned to find Jake waving at me with a smug look on his face. I groaned and silently made my way over to the table. I could feel the scrutinizing looks from Lexi and Stacy, and I felt Andre's eyes make their way down my body. I wrinkled my nose in disgust and pulled my shirt up trying to cover up in the best way. I turned my eyes to Jake's green eyes staring at me, the smirk still traced on his face. I took another deep breath, praying that I wouldn't make a fool out of myself.

"Welcome to Sally's, can I help you?"
