depending on the tone of the essay, you could focus on Jaycee Duggard, the girl kidnapped and held hostage for years. Her book "A Stolen Life" tells the story of how she prevailed through her hardships. It's worth looking up :)

Take Vic Fuentes for example.

He's the singer of pierce the veil(fangirls) he's been through a lot of sht like self harm and family issues. But it shaped him to be the person he is today. If he hadn't gone through all that pain he wouldn't be where he is today. He's stronger cause pain changed him..
