Winter Wise
Chapter 1
Elizabeth raised the mug to her plush, bubblegum pink lips, taking a sip of the fresh, warm coffee and savouring the taste. She placed the mug back on the table, steam rising to dissapear in the brisk winter air.
She looked at the street, observing and silently commenting on everything she saw. The people that roamed, the booming city noises that filled her ears, the buildings that kissed the sky.
Then, she turned to him, staring vacantly with her large, soft gray eyes, which were usually green during the summer. Her lips parted into a smile, perfectly aligned and bright white teeth showing.
"You know what I love about the city, Austin?" she asked, voice low, but loud enough to be heard.
"Well, knowing you, Liz, it's probably some deep, emotional, serene-type thing," he said, sarcasm mixed with a bit of laughter in his voice.
She chuckled, a cloud of air appearing. "Everything – every person, every object, every building has a story. And no story is the same. Isn't that amazing? Thinking that there's something...greater behind everything."
Austin smiled, dimples indented in his cheeks.
"Sorry, I went Buddha again, didn't I?"
"Kinda," Austin nodded, laughing. "But I've been friends with you for thirteen years now, so it's nothing new."
"I think really won you over when we were five and I told you the different types of sand when we were in the sandbox," Elizabeth grinned.
"And despite your weirdness, I managed to stay friends with you. Isn't that something?"
They both laughed, thinking about the amusing memories of when they were younger.
She took the last sip of her now cooled coffee. "Ready to go?"
"Yup," he said, tasting the last bit of his coffee as well. "Where are we going now?"
"It's New York, we're young, and it's winter break. So anywhere you desire, young man," she replied, her long, strawberry blonde hair flowing under her gray beanie as she twirled around. She skipped down the street, getting a few strange looks from passing people.
Austin shook his head and let out a short laugh, sticking his hands in his coat and following her.
He hoped against hope,
thinking that he could mean more to her in this city.
