Chapter
one
It was the end of fall.
The multicolored leaves drifted to the ground lazily, completely
baring the trees.
"Poor trees. You must be cold." I whispered icily,
mesmorized by the plumy puffs of my breath in the cold air. I
steadied my earmuffs.
"First sign of being crazy. Talking to yourself."
I looked over at my boyfriend, Kyle, and smiled weakly. He
didn't sound like he was joking.
We continued walking in silence for a couple steps. "Er,
Kyle?" I said softly. He looked over at me,
"What?" I cringed internally and thanked god it was
nearing winter.
It was always easier to hide the bruises with long sleeves and
scarves.
"Nothing, nevermind."
We passed by my neighbor, Steve. Kyles hand tightened painfully
around mine.
"Keep your eyes off of him." A tear escaped my eye and
I brushed it away.
"You know I would never do anything." I tried to pull
my fingers from his crushing grip and he only squeezed
harder. "Quit struggling. He's staring." He growled
at me.
I looked at Kyle hard and willed his old self to come back
to me.
His old, fun, happy self. "Kyle, you're hurting
me."
His gaze dropped to our hands, where my fingertips were turning
blueish. I stifled a moan and let him relax his hand. The feeling
of blood returning to my hand was almost painful.
"Sorry, Babe." He slung his arm around my shoulder.
I half smiled at Steve, who had seen and probably heard the whole
encounter.
We passed his yard and Kyle relaxed.
"It's not like I don't love how you do it, Nicole.
It's that I want you for myself. Nobody wants a sl*t for a
girlfriend." He shrugged it off. As if his words hadn't
just peirced my heart. "You know i'm not a
sl*t, Kyle."
He ignored me, but grabbed my hand again.
