My
Way

Chapter 32 Part 2: Val's P.O.V.
We went ice skating in the afternoon and then came back home and
relaxed. It was funny to watch Ben ice skate: he was still as
horrible as ever. Watching him stumble and fall made me laugh,
but I eventually gave in and helped him so he wouldn’t wake
up tomorrow with a bunch of bruises. I, on the other hand, was
pretty good. I could skate pretty fast, and I could go backwards.
He wasn’t amused when I went around the rink and past him
more than once, but I got a kick out of it.
Right now it was 11:50 and we were sitting down watching Times
Square on TV. I wanted to go there and watch the ball drop one
day. It’s on my bucket list. I had started writing one the
day after the funeral. It was already getting long. I was afraid
that my life would end sooner than I wanted it to, and I
wouldn’t get to do all of the things I wanted to in
life.
I wanted to make sure I didn’t let my life pass me by
anymore. Most of it would have to wait until after high school so
I could go places and do these things, but waiting a little while
would be okay.
Ben didn’t know about it. I knew he wouldn’t approve.
He didn’t want me to be in the mindset that there was a
possibility I could die young. He said it wouldn’t happen
to me. But he couldn’t be sure of that. I never thought it
would happen to Loretta, I always thought we would find her. But
I was wrong, and that means Ben could be wrong too. I just want
to be ready and feel fulfilled when my time comes.
I usually added to the list when Ben was showering or when he was
asleep. Sometimes I would wake up and find him sleeping soundly,
so I knew it was safe to write.
So far I had:
- Watch the
ball drop in Times Square
- Learn how
to speak a new language
- Go sky
diving
- Harry
Potter movie marathon
- Help
somebody
- Learn how
to play an instrument
- Fly in a
hot air balloon
- Get
married
- Yell at
the top of my lungs in a public place
- Travel
Europe
- Visit
Alaska to see the Northern lights
- Learn how
to beat box
- Try
archery
- Be in a
movie
- Kiss a
stranger
- See the
Mona Lisa in person
- Take a
picture in front of the White House
And I just added:
- Fall in
love
I guess that was a bit ambitious, but anything is possible.
It’s time to start living my life; it’s time to
begin.
It was now 11:59, and we were all getting anxious. I was excited:
I would start a new year and try and move on. But I was also sad
that I would be starting a new year without Loretta. It
didn’t feel right.
“You alright?” Ben asked from beside me.
“Yeah, I’m good.” I smiled at him.
“Listen, Aly--” He started but I was cut off by a
knock on my door. I was confused, but I ran over to answer it so
I wouldn’t miss the ball drop.
“5, 4, 3,” I opened the door. “Danny.” I
said breathlessly.
“Happy New Year, beautiful.” He said and pressed his
lips to mine as the people of Times Square shouted
“One!” and everyone cheered.
