Chapter 1

Unwanted

I woke up to the sound of thunder behind my purple velvet curtains. I opened my eyes to see a flash strike onto my curtains. I rolled onto my other side, not wanting to get up. First day of school was always the worst. "Pippy" I sleepily called, expecting my golden labrador pup to lick my face. I sat up and called again. "Pippy? Here girl!" I got out of bed and threw my silk robe over my pajamas. I opened  the curtains and since there wasn't any sun, there were just grey foggy clouds outside, I  couldn't see very well, so I turned on the light. Where was Pippy? She wasn't in my room. My door was open, which was strange because I quite vividly remember closing it last night. I called down the stairs. "Piiiiiiipppppy!" The lightbulb had blown in the hallway and there were no windows so I grabbed a torch from my room. I made my way down the stairs. I walked into the kitchen. Pippy had only been my pup for a few weeks and she would only ever leave my room when she had to pee or go for a walk. Otherwise she was a pretty lazy dog, always sleeping. I felt a cold breeze on my back. I turned around to see that the front door had been broken into! I ran upstairs and into my fathers room. "Dad! Dad!! Wake up! We have been broken into and Pippy is gone!!" I panicked, shaking him. He woke up with a mumble and I had to repeat myself. "Really?!" my Dad questioned. "Better call the pound to see if they have her!" said dad, reaching for his phone. I shone the torch on his bed side table so he could see where his phone was. "Wheres my phone?" dad said, confused. "Ah well, better use the lanline." My dad said, reaching for the home phone. "Hang on a second, voice mail" he said. "We cant wait around dad! This is serious!!" I said, almost in tears. "Shhhhh... " said dad, trying to listen. I could hear it loud and clear. "Thanks for the dog" I heard. There were wimping dog sounds in the background. Is that who took Pippy? Tears were streaming down my face. "Shhh, it's okay Emma" said dad trying to see what the number was. It was blocked. Great. Dad tried calling the pound but of course it was 5.30am and so they wouldn't be accepting calls at this time. My mind was totally off subject that I totally forgot it was my birthday, but I decided not to bring up the subject, as it was not the right time. I never got anything for my birthday. My dad never remembered. Even if I did tell him he would just give me a happy birthday and thats it. He has been miserable ever since mum left us. She gave up on us. She decided she didn't need us, and packed all her stuff and just left one night. I was only 12, and now im 18. It's been really hard for dad ever since. It's kind of like I live by myself sometimes, because dad will just hide away in his room sobbing or sitting on the end of his bed staring into space. I would go nights without any dinner. "Lets go" said Dad, grabbing his coat, gumboots, and an umbrella. I ran into my room and threw on my ripped jersey from 3 years ago and some worn out jeans, and then put on my gumboots. Dad didn't seem to care that all he treated was himself. I never got any new clothes, and often had to re-wear outfits 3 times. Our house was falling apart as well, and Dad didn't seem to have the money to pay the rent. I grabbed my umbrella and we ran down the stairs and out the broken front door. I didn't really know where we were going. We just seemed to be walking into the storm. "Where are we going?" I asked. "The police station" Dad replied.
