Flightless Bird
Chapter 7 - part 2
My breathing became ever more laboured as I ran from the room,
Jacob on my tail. I could barely hear him over the roaring in my
ears, and as I tore out of the common room and down the
corridor outside my vision began to dance with spots of light.
The walls began to spin, and I fell heavily down onto the floor.
I tried to catch my breath, but it didn't work. I
couldn't breathe.
"Kerri! What's happening? Kerri, can you hear me?
Kerri!" Jacob asked fantically, sliding down next to me. Now
that I had stopped running the noise in my ears had subsided
enough for me to hear what was going on around me. I heard say to
Jacob,
"I doubt it. She's having a panic attack, and I would
guess she also has asthma. Now, help her over here and into my
room." Jacob didn't say a word back, but soon I felt
myself being lifted and moved along the hall.
"Put her down on the bed, and don't let her lie down. We
need to keep her airways open," the other voice said.
"I can't find an inhaler on her," Jacob said,
tugging at my pockets. I moved to get it, but large hands stopped
me, and reached inside my blazer to the small pocket where I kept
my inhaler.
"Here," they said. I heard a clicking, then they handed
me my inhaler attached to a spacing device. I put the mouthpiece
to my lips, then pressed my reliever inhaler and took a
deep breath. Instantly the tightness in my chest eased, and
I found I could breathe again. I took another puff, and then took
my inhaler off the spacer and put it away in my blazer again.
"Thank you," I said, looking up to see Jacob
perched on the end of the bed. He smiled weakly at me,
"You okay?" he asked. I nodded.
"Any thanks for me?" asked Charlie, stepping over to me
from the corner.
"Thank you Charlie. That would have ended badly without
you," I said. He smiled.
"Well, us asthmatics have to look out for one another,"
he said. Charlie was asthmatic? I wouldn't have guessed. I
was smiling back at Charlie when the bell rang to signal the end
of free period.
"I have to go," I said, looking at Jacob. His smile
faded slowly as he remembered where our conversation had
ended.
"Why in such a hurry?" Charlie asked, leaning against
the bed post.
"I told Lexi I would meet her in our room. She'll be
waiting," I told him, standing up.
"You sure you'll be okay? You want me to walk you?"
Jacob asked worriedly, standing as soon as I did.
"Thanks, but I'll be fine. See you in English," I
said, leaving the room. I walked as swiftly as I could down the
hallway which was rapidly filling with people filing out of their
lessons. I got stuck behind a group of year 8 girls when I felt a
tap on my shoulder.
"Adam, hey!" I said, turning to see him grinning at
me.
"They're a nightmare, right?" he joked, gesturing
at the year 8's. I grinned, and he pulled me around them so
we could walk straight with no obstacles to the the stairs.
"How was your date?" he asked me, winking. My face
fell.
"That bad huh?"
"It was going really well, but then I mentioned that I
walked in with you after Biology and Jacob got all weird. Started
asking what we talked about and stuff," I told Adam. He
frowned.
"That really doesn't sound like him," he said.
"It kind of upset me, to be honest. I felt like he was mad
at me for some reason," I said truthfully. Adam gave me a
sympathetic hug, then held out his arms.
"Hug?" he asked. I smiled, jumping on him for the
second time today.
"I should have known better!" Adam cried as he began
staggering backwards. I slid off before I made him fall down the
stairs; I wasn't completely evil.
"Man, I need to stop trying to hug you," Adam said,
rubbing his neck.
"Yep," I piped cheerily, earning me a look. We
got down the stairs, and once we were on the second floor I said
to Adam,
"Sorry Adam, I'm meeting Lexi for some girl talk. See
you in English?" He nodded, smiling as he walked away and
tried to a prefect to high-five him. I grinned at his odd nature,
until I rolled my eyes up and saw Jacob watching me from the
third floor balcony. His gaze wandered over to Adam, and I
wondered how much he had seen. He shot me an odd look, and I
tried to catch his eye but a human giraffe walked in front of me,
and when they were gone, so was Jacob. I sighed, and started off
to my room to meet Lexi.
Sorry if any of this is unrealistic :/
