Chapter
Five
The next few weeks passed by in
a blaze of colors. It was now late June, and Marcie had informed
us that today we would be kayaking with cabins 3 and 8.
"Wear something practical!" Marcie said.
As we set out to the lake, our clothes said less "camp in
the middle of the woods," and more "tanning at the
beach in L.A." I was wearing a navy blue and white striped
bikini, a pair of dark denim short shorts, and a dark blue
see-through cover up. Skie was wearing a yellow one piece, which
on most people would look like a brown paper bag covered in
mustard, but some how made her look like a
model. Zoey’s outfit consisted of a hot pink triangle
bikini and flip-flops. Tess had on a pair of board shorts and a
pretty tank top, with a green halter top swimsuit underneath.
Arriving at the dock, we saw Tyler, Miles, Perry, and Zach, and
some other girls from camp. The guys walked up to us. Tyler put
his arm around my neck. “We need partners for the kayaking
lesson. I was thinking you and I could partner up.” He
whispered in my ear. I smiled and nodded. “Sounds
good.” I looked up to see the four other girls staring
daggers at us.
“Alright, ladies and
germs, partner up! Once you’ve found your partner, please
come stand in line to get a life vest.” The kayaking
instructor yelled. Tyler grabbed my hand and pulled me, laughing
down the dock to where the kayaks were. Once we were assigned to
a kayak and, we pushed off. As soon as we were out of hearing
distance from the rest of the group, I asked, “Who are
those girls?” Tyler looked up. “From the other cabin?
That’s Lacy, Ashlyn, Sarah, and Kate. Why?” I
coughed. “Because they’ve been giving my the evil eye
since we got here, and I’ve never met them
before…” Tyler sighed. “Oh…sorry.
Lacy…she went to my old school. We dated for a month or so
and it was a pretty messy breakup…”
“Oh?”
“Yeah, don’t worry
about her though.”
Just then, the kayaking
instructor called out, “Alright kids, listen up. In 10
seconds we’re going to start a race. Everybody line up at
the far side of the lake. The first pair to make it to the dock
wins.”
“On your mark, get set,
GO”
We were off. “C’mon
Mia we got this!” Tyler yelled his brow furrowed. I
couldn’t help but laugh. We were gaining on the other
boats, when all of a sudden someone collided with us. I had a
split second the look up and see who had hit us before our boat
capsized.
It was Lacy.
And I can’t swim.
