Repunzel

A sea of faces, teenagers, some stared, but most of them continued walking on past toward the centre of the school. The only two faces I knew were right beside me, Vicky and Amy, as they guided me towards the front gates with a sign above it which read ‘St James College Brisbane’.
We passed through the gates and entered the front lawn of the school. I had never imagined that a school would be that big. And there were so many people! St James was a very different place from my house in the forest, and I soon realised that I had no idea how to act in social situations like this, and from some of the stares that people gave me I probably looked like it too.
“Okay Charlie, that’s the cafeteria over there and right next to it is the math building. And the front office is just there so if you ever need anythi-” she stopped mid-sentence. “Geez Charlie, you look like you’ve just entered a prison.”
“Well, it sort of is a prison, but you get what she means,” Vicky whispered in my ear, smirking.
Amie gave her a death stare before turning to me and saying “Listen, you just need to relax. It’s just school. It’s not like you’ve never been to a school before.”
Except I haven’t.
I felt a fresh wave of guilt wash over me. Eventually I would have to tell these two the truth. But now was not the time.
Vicky chipped in, saying “Come on Charlie, I don’t want to be forced into saying one of those cheesy lines like ‘Just imagine everyone with no pants on.’”
This coaxed a smile out of me. I took a deep breath, pushed my shoulders back and continued on just like I always have. The nerves still rushed through me though, so I unconsciously rubbed the scar that ran along my temple.
A football flew past us, barely missing us, and a herd of boys ran after it. Some wolf whistled when they passed, others called out things like “Sorry ladies!” but one boy detached himself from the group and came towards us.
“Sorry about that,” He said, smiling at us. “We had a big win on the weekend. That and Johnny likes to show off to the ladies.”
He gave us a wink and was about to turn away, but then he saw me.
