Breakeven.
Part
Four
The beeps started to go up, as his
heart rate slowly returned to normal. The brown-haired boy tossed
and turned in his bed, as if he was having a nightmare. In his
dream, he was running away from a silver Chevy. He dreamed of a
girl, lying on the ground beside him when the truck ran over him.
The girl was beautiful, her curled hair swam down her bare back -
which was covered in blood. Noah!, the girl in his dream cried,
she opened her mouth to say something else, but something awoke
Noah before he could respond to the girl.
"Noah?" A honey-sweet voice cooed. It was Mia. She held
his hand as she said, "It's all right, you got into a
car crash, but you'll make it, don't worry."
"That's it?" Noah asked, "I get out of the
crash without any damage?"
Mia pursed her lips into a tight line, "Well, you can't
do any physical activity for the next few months,
and...."
"What?! But the basketball season starts in a
month!"
"Basketball seasons over, honey," Mia said with a
laugh.
Then she grimaced, "You've forgotten all about the past
six months. But that's okay. Things will be back to normal
when school starts in a few months; we'll be the It Couple
again," Mia said with her signature smile. The smile that
made boys want to do her and hers want to be her.
Noah felt a tingle of melancholy when she smiled, he remembered
how lonely he sometimes felt with her. He had lots of friends and
even more girls vying for his attention, but there was something
- rather, someone he was missing.
"Mia," he began, "did anything big...or
any big changes happen to my life in the time I
can't remember?"
Mia frowned and stared and the tips of her stilettos,
"No," she whispered. She didn't look like herself,
she looked weak and hurt. Not like the radiant Mia Noah had once
loved.
Whatever emotion had taken over was gone, "You won national
championships! Next year is going to be amazing, ok? We'll
win prom king and queen again, this whole mess'll be out of
the way, you won't even remember it when you look back.
Don't even ask about everything that's happend in the
last few months, don't worry about it, it's not
important," Mia droned on. But Noah wasn't listening.
Something else caught his attention.
The girl from his dream.
