CHAPTER TWO
- H o l l y ' s  P o i n t  o f  V i e w -

“WE’RE HOME!” I called up the staircase, feeling the weight ease off of my back as I let my bright blue backpack slide off my shoulder, crashing onto the hardwood floor. I heard a clatter from the upstairs bathroom, my daily reminder that my mother worried more about her makeup and hair than about her own daughters.
I sighed, exchanging glances with Hannah, who had already opened the fridge and grabbed out a bright red apple.
“girls, girls, we need to talk to you about something,” my mom called, stumbling down the stairs, trailing my dad behind her. I was surprised to see my dad home, considering he was usually at the office until 8 or 9 every night, and assumed that they must have something important to tell us.
I gave my mom a quizzical face, encouraging her to keep talking, because i hated loose ends.
“so, as you hopefully know, next month is your mother and I’s 25 year anniversary. It’s kind of a big deal, 25 years...” my dad strayed off, starting back up again once he figured out what to say. He fumbled with the buttons at the end of his striped dress shirt, twisting them around and around.
“for our anniversary we wanted to do something special, so we decided to go on a vacation.”
My heart accidentally skipped a beat, and i wasn’t really sure why.
I waited again for my dad to continue, telling us where we would be spending a few weeks of our summer, away from friends, away from home, away from everything. I could tell that Hannah was interested now, too, by the way she had lifted her chin up, and finally made eye contact with my parents instead of her usual i’ll-stare-at-the-floor-until-you-tell-me-not-to attitude. It was a subtle enough move, but I noticed it none the less.
“We decided on a romantic location, so we’re going to Rome for the summer. We’ve heard about the art collections there. You know how art buying can be, it’s going to take a while. We’ve already booked a trip for the whole summer,” he stated, nonchalantly.
My eyes visibly widened and i could actually feel my jaw drop.
“a whole summer?” I asked in utter disbelief.
This could not be happening. I had plans. I had friends. I had a job. I had sleepovers, mall trips, beach days, pool parties. I had summer, and i wasn’t going to give it up for a stupid art collection.
“no. way.” i told my dad, staring him directly in the eyes. His icy blue eyes challenged mine and eventually i glanced away, pretending that i had never looked at him in the first place.
“you’ll be fine without us, honey, you’re almost seventeen.” i heard my mom say, but it was distant.
“wait, what do you mean, without you?” Hannah asked, stealing the question right out of my mouth.
“well we’re obviously not bringing you with. That’s why we told you all of this. You two will be staying at the beach house for the summer. I’d suggest you start packing now, we leave tomorrow.” My dad held up his watch, signaling that time was running out.
The beach house? By ourselves? All summer?
Thoughts swarmed my head, and i clumsily made my way up the stairs and into my room, the light pink one at the end of the hall. I pulled my phone out of the back pocket of my ridiculously expensive jeans, setting up a mass message to all of my friends.
One word: disaster.
