I once met a boy named Michael. Even
when things were going bad, Michael was always positive and he
never got angry. If you asked him how he was he would
say "If I
were any better, I'd be
twins." One day I
walked up to him and said "How do you do it? You can't
be positive all the time. What's your secret?" He said
to me "Every morning I wake up and I have two choices. I can
choose to be in a good mood or I can choose to be in a bad mood.
I choose to be in a good mood." I stared at him. "No.
It can't be that easy." I said "It is." He
said. "We can't waste our lives making everyone
else's life worse."
A few years later I found out
that Michael was involved in a bad accident. He'd had a bad
fall from a three story building. When I saw him I asked him how
he was. He
said "If I
were any better, I'd be
twins." I asked
him if he was scared when it happened. He said he was. While he
was falling he found that he had two choices - he could choose to
live or he could choose to die. He chose to live. While in the
hospital, the nurses faces scared him. He knew he had to do
something. Just before his operation one of them asked him if he
was allergic to anything. He said "yes." Everyone in
the room stopped and waited for him to continue. He took a deep
breath and
yelled "gravity!" This
caught their attention and they all started to laugh. Then he
said, "Now,
operate on me as if I am alive, not
dead." I once
