Breathless
Chapter 6
“Somebody’s in love.” Elijah said,
grinning at me. In love? I had never even so much as
used that word with any of my past boyfriends, and he thinks
I’m in love with Xavier? No. I was not in love
with him. I just met him, anyway.
“I am not in love.” My voice was harsh. That was
absolutely ridiculous. Xavier wasn’t my type. I
didn’t go for boys that have that kind of taste in girls.
Plus, he wouldn’t even be interested in me. This thought
made me upset. Of course Xavier would like me. Why wouldn’t
he? But, I don’t care. I’m not ready for a
relationship. I looked up, and found Grace smiling. Oh, crap. She
thinks I like him, too. Now, she’ll probably blab to every
other person about it.
“You’re blushing,” Grace said, leaning forward.
She had the biggest smile on her face. “You better be
careful, though. Caitlyn and Xavier are a serious on and off
couple. They dated five times over the summer.” Grace
looked over at Elijah. “Addison, I can already see it.
We’re going to be best friends. And you’re going to
be the one to steal Xavier away from Caitlyn.” Grace leaned
back, taking a bite of pizza.
“No, no, no. I am not taking anybody away.”
I glanced around nervously, hoping no one overheard the comment.
Why would Grace even think that? Xavier and I had no future. I
was sure of it. I don’t even think we could be friends.
“Too late, Addi. The plan is already in motion.” She
motioned towards a table behind my back. I turned to look. Xavier
was looking at me; his sweater was rumpled like his hair. There
was a touch of softness to his stare that didn’t make me
want to turn away, rather want to hold his gaze. I had
never felt this feeling before. Like a million little
bombs were going off in my stomach. It didn’t hurt, it was
a good feeling. It was the feeling of love.
