chapter
24:
My dad quickly walked into the
car ahead of me.
He sat down, closing the door behind him.
I went in, looking at him with a confused look, and strapped
my seatbelt.
He started driving right away.
"Dad, why am I going to the hospital?"
His eyes lifted from the road, and looked at me.
Silence.
He looked back, concentrating on his driving.
The car ride was awkward.
All I heard was the sound of the tires against the roads,
cars beeping, and my dads broken gas pedal.
We arrived at the hospital that seemed more packed today than
the day before.
We parked in a spot near intensive care, the same spot
we had ever since Noah got in the hospital.
"Let's go." He quickly got out of the car and
into the building.
I followed him all the way to Noah's room.
When we got in Emily was there, too.
She sat by the bed, holding Noah's hand.
She looked up at me, then her head fell back down as we made
eye contact.
Noah's eyes were barely open, and it looked like he was
having trouble breathing.
His eyes moved towards mine, and a faint smile appeared on
his face when he saw me.
I smiled back.
My mom looked up from the bed side, walking towards my father
and I in the entrence.
"Let's go outside for a minute."
Her and my dad interlocked hands, walking into the hallway
guiding me
to where the doctor was standing with them the day
before.
They just stood there, facing me.
They had no emotion on their faces, or in their eyes.
It was just darkness.
"Can someone please explain to me what's going
on?" I asked angrily.
They looked at each other, and back at me.
"The doctor.. " My dad started. "Found
something."
I looked back and forth between them.
"What?" I asked, confused.
"They didn't know it, but Noah.. he has internal
bleeding." My mom said.
"So.. is that bad?"
"If it's caught early, no."
"Then he's fine." I smiled a little.
But, they didn't smile.
"They didn't catch it early, Scar." My dads
eyes were moist.
I stood in silence.
"But, they can still stop it, right?" I asked.
"No." He answered.
A tear fell from my mom's face.
My dad wrapped his arm around her, hugging her.
"But, he'll be okay." I said trying to stay
positive.
"Scarlet.." My mom looked at me.
I looked at her, and we made eye contact.
She shook her head, and her eyes moved towards the floor.
"No." My eyes filled with tears.
"They don't know how long he has." My dad said
before becoming completely silent.
"They can fix it. That's what the doctors are
for!" I started to shout.
"It's too late, Scarlet." My dad said
seriously.
"It's not too late!" I yelled.
Finally, the tears fell from my cheeks,
flowing down my face, ruining my perfect mascara and
eyeliner.
I ran off down the hallway covering my face towards the
bathroom.
I ran in, past the people washing their hands who looked at
me in confusion.
I didn't care.
I forgot the rest of the world.
I ran into a stall, and locked the door, sitting on the
floor
throwing my head between my knees.
