One Heart Less
Chapter 3
Emma's POV
“Ow! Shellie, you’re supposed to be doing my nails, not ripping them off!” I shrieked pulling away. I stuck my finger in my mouth.
“No pain no gain sister.” She grabbed my hand and started back up again. I gritted my teeth.
“Hey Em—” Dylan stopped in the doorway and raised an eye brow. “What are you two doing…?”
“Ask her.” I jabbed my thumb in Shellie’s direction. She looked up innocently and immediately I saw her lips form a smile. Shellie has always had the biggest crush on Dylan ever since we were little. I find it disgusting.
“Hi Dylan.” Shellie said sweetly.
“Hey Shell.” He smiled nicely and sat on the arm rest of a chair. Then he turned his attention back on me. “How are you feeling?”
“Me or my fingers?” I wiggled my newly bright pink nails in front of his face.
“You know what I mean.”
“I’m fine.” I assured him.
“Good. The Packers game is on later if you wanna watch it.” It was a sweet offer but Shellie had already planned the entire night.
“Thanks, but I think we’re just gonna watch movies.” I nudged Shellie and she clapped excitedly.
“This is going to be sooo fun. I brought Dear John and She’s The Man! Channing Tatum you make me melt!” She swooned and fell back on to the pillows.
I giggled then looked back to Dylan who was smiling, obviously amused by what he saw.
“Where’d mom and dad go?” I asked him.
He hesitated at first then said, “They’re talking to some doctors in the other room.” He nodded towards the wall.
“I know you know what they’re talking about. Tell me.” I pleaded.
Dylan just shook his head and got up to leave. “I can’t.”
“I have the right to know!” I yelled just as he reached the door. My eyes started to water.
“Emma…” Shellie sat up quickly and rubbed my shoulder.
“I know you do.” Dylan turned around. “But I don’t have the heart to tell you.” He said helplessly.
“I hardly have a heart at all.” I said and looked away.
