Chapter
Three
“How do you
know my Aunt Katherine?” I sputtered as I
finally managed to release myself from his
grip. I stood and took a few shaky steps
backward.
His eyes rolled. “I kidnapped
her.”
This caused me to let out a quiet gasp.
“Just kidding! Calm down. What, you
thought I was here to abduct you? Naaah,
I’m her neighbor. She got a little held
up at the hospital, real bad car accident, and since
I run some errands for her she asked if I’d
come get you.”
A normal person probably would have let out a sigh of
relief, apologized, or at least explained
themselves. Not I. “You’re
late!” I scolded, pointing an accusing finger
at him.
He scratched the back of his head awkwardly.
“Pokémon was on… I lost track of
time.”
“How in the world could you forget to pick
someone up just because— did you say
Pokémon? Well, okay, at least you have a
good excuse.”
He responded with a surprised smile. “I
didn’t think a girl like you would be
into…” he trailed off.
“Into what?” I questioned suspiciously,
raising an eyebrow.
“Well… fun stuff. Not saying you
don’t look fun or anything, but, you
know,” he gestured toward my clothing.
I cast my gaze downward, taking in a pastel pink
sundress with lace at the bottom, which was
coordinated perfectly with a cream sweater and
matching sandals. Mom insisted that as long as
Aunt Katherine was taking me in, I might as well look
nice for her.
“Ohhhh, you think I’m a cupcake!” I
snorted quite unattractively, which caused me to
blush. “Naw, my mom made me wear
this.”
“Well then, maybe we can be friends after
all,” he said. “I’m Logan, by
the way, and seeing as I’m supposed to have you
home…” he paused, “half an hour
ago, we’re going to have to use a mode of
transportation!”
“Uh… what did you have in mind?” I
asked. After spending a day and a night on a
smelly bus, I really didn’t want to take one
again.
“Oh… you know, my ride,” he said,
waving his hand airily and walking away. He
stopped when he noticed I wasn’t following
behind him. “Come on, silly!” he
exclaimed, grabbing my elbow and dragging me off like
a toddler. I had a feeling my sandals
wouldn’t be white by the time I got
home…
