Chapter
four.
“You can what?” She stopped abruptly. Head snapping up
to attention.
“Read minds.” I whispered again. Staring down at the
ground. I decided to see what she was thinking, whether she
believed me or not.
‘She can read minds? Did she just say she can read minds?
Well if she can read them, what are you guys having for
dinner?’
“Tacos.” I said. It was kinda lame what she was
thinking. If someone says they can read minds the first thing you
think is, then what am I thinking about?
“Huh?” She stared blankly at me.
“You were wondering what we were having for dinner in your
thoughts and I said tacos. We’re having tacos for
dinner.”
“Whoa. You really can read minds.” She plopped down on
my bed and started contemplating about all of this. She was a bit
pale. Maybe it was a mistake telling her.
“I don’t know how it happen I was just sitting here on
my bed last night listening to my ipod for dinner when I started
hearing things. I thought that maybe it was just a remix of my
music but it was numbers I was hearing. I ran downstairs to see if
my mom was talking out loud because she was doing the taxes. She
wasn’t though and when I asked her if she was she looked at
me like I was crazy and then I heard what she was thinking. I
thought maybe I was going crazy but I could hear it with my whole
family. And then at school today I fainted because my mind was over
worked with so many thoughts going on.” I gulped up more
oxygen. I was totally all out of breath explain that to her, the
words coming out faster than I could think.
She moved her eyes to mine and stared at me blankly. I know I could
read her mind if I wanted too, but I really didn’t want to. I
didn’t want to get into the habit of reading my best friends
mind, or anybody’s mind for that matter. I didn’t want
to get their words and thoughts mixed up.
“Mina..?” she wasn’t talking.
“That’s. So. COOL!” She exclaimed jumping up from
my bed.
“Shhh. Be quiet or my mom’s gonna come up.” I
said grinning. She believed me. I snuck a glance into her mind. She
really did believe me.
“Sorry. How does it work?” She asked eagerly, begging
for information.
“Well I can decide when I want to listen to people’s
thoughts; and whose I want to listen to. It’s kinda
complicated. I don’t exactly know how to explain it, but
yeah.” She drank all of it in.
“Are you reading mine now? Or no?”
“Nope.”
“Have you been all day? Do you know what everyone is
thinking? Why do you think you can?” She was dying to more.
Curiosity killed the cat. Hadn’t she ever heard that
before.
“No, if I want to, and I have no clue.”
“What about...” I cut her off. I was tired of all the
questions, and my head was pounding. I needed to take something for
it.
“No more questions. All I know is all I told you. Nothing
more. You can’t tell ANYBODY. Promise?” Mina was good
with keeping secrets I wasn’t that worried that she would
tell anybody, but this was a very large and interesting secret if I
do say so myself.
“Of course I promise!” I checked her mind just to see,
I couldn’t risk her telling anyone. And once again, she was
true to her word.
“Okay, well we should probably start working on our
homework.” We settled down with our Algebra books and started
to get to work on it. I could see Mina keep sneaking glances over
to me and I couldn’t help but laugh every time she did. I
couldn’t blame her though, if it was Mina who told me I would
be just as curious as she was.
“Girls, dinner!” My mom called up the
stairs.
After our dinner of tacos, my mom brought Mina home I turned in
early for the night. My headache still pounding even after I took
extra strength aspirin.
