“Can we go down there?” She asked, mesmerized by the
sight and forgetting about what had happened in the family room
moments before. Chris nodded and led her down. When they got there
she was amazed and speechless. She was in her own little world,
studying her surroundings.
“Taylor?” She heard Chris ask. She whipped her head
towards him and narrowed her eyes.
“What was your Mom talking about?” She
demanded.
“Well, you know how you kind of had a hunch as to who
everyone was?” She nodded, not saying a word. “Well
there’s a reason for that.”
“Continue,” She ordered, still staring him
down.
“Well, see… Man, I really don’t know how to say
this.” He looked like he was about to cry, but Taylor
didn’t let up.
“Spit it out, Pretty Boy.” He smiled weakly.
“Well, there was this accident.” He started. “It
was, well, two years ago next month. See, I was driving the car
down the road and a tractor trailer hit the car. It hit the
passenger side and my girlfriend was in the car with me. She ended
up in a coma and when she woke up she couldn’t remember the
last six months, the whole time that we were together. He mother
was so upset that she moved away- moved to another part of
Washington DC. She didn’t want her daughter to see me
anymore.”
“So what?” Taylor asked.
“That… Oh wow, this is hard… She was, well,
you.” He shrugged and looked at her, pleading with his
eyes.
“What are you talking about?” She asked.
“We were already together once, but that happened and you
didn’t remember me or my family, even though we were all so
close. I finally found you and now my life is right again.”
He tried. She looked at him for a minute or two, then turned on her
heel and started to stomp away. She heard a thump behind her, but
ignored it. She walked up to the house and through the double
French doors again. His whole family was waiting.
“Did he tell you?” Gabby asked.
“Yes, he did.” She told them.
“Yay!” Isabella squealed. “I missed you so much
Taylor! I’m so glad you’re back!” She ran up and
gave her a hug again and soon everyone was around her, hugging her
and holding on tight. She caught a glimpse out the window and saw
Chris crumpled on the dock, head in his hands. She knew then, that
she could not follow through with her plan to leave. She felt a
tear fall down her cheek and held on tighter to everyone around
her. Her family, for all practical
purposes.
