It was the first time I
had spent Christmas away from home. My parents and I held up
our glasses and toasted over our dinner in Jamaica. Now, I
was glad we were here because I heard from Drew that there
was supposed to be a big snow storm coming tomorrow. I hated
snow.
It was different not being in the apartment in Brooklyn. We
would be sitting in the living room, opening the presents, ya
know, crap like that. I wasn’t exactly happy that we
were away from home, especially since it was just my parents
and me. It was so boring, and there weren’t really any
other guys or girls to hang with that I liked. We finished
dinner and I stayed outside, walking around, trying to find
somewhere for me to think.
Championships for swimming were coming up and I
couldn’t afford a week off. They were in February but I
didn’t want to be all bent out of shape and train extra
hard in January. And this food here wasn’t helping. I
decided I would do some laps in the pool or in the ocean
tomorrow morning. The wind blew effortlessly over me and I
smiled and looked back at the lights from the
hotel.
It wasn’t a very big property but I went far enough for
me to only hear the music hum in the back round. The ocean
was my music, now. I walked down onto the beach and sat down,
letting the water lap at my feet. It was December and the
water still managed to feel like bath water. I smiled and
looked at the sky.
I didn’t get why no one came down here at night. It was
a lot nicer and prettier, than in the morning. I took out my
dad’s expensive Cannon and took a picture of the
shadows of the tiki lights lining the pathway. I made my eyes
squint and pressed the button. I looked down to see how it
turned out. There was a girl in the picture. What the
hell?
I looked up and saw the same figure standing there. It was
definitely a girl, unless it was a boy with long hair and
shorts and with one of those off the shoulder shirts. She
walked down and said rather boldly, “It’s kind of
creepy when people take pictures of you at
night.”
Her tone was sarcastic and slightly flirty at the same
time.
“I was not trying
to take a picture of you. You were in my picture. I was
trying to get the shadow of the tiki lights,” I
defended myself. “I’m not some creepy old guy
hiding behind a bush. I’m sixteen.”
She was standing over me,
and even in the dark I could tell I would’ve liked her.
“How’d the picture turn out?” she asked as
she settled down next to me. She smelt like fruits and
vanilla and her soft hair brushed against my skin before she
held it back from the wind. She smelled and sounded
irresistible. Her voice was light, not whiny. I pulled myself
together and showed her the picture.
“It’s not so
bad,” she said after a minute.
I looked at it again and it looked like those pictures of
silhouettes. It looked really good actually.
“I’ve always liked photography,” she
continued.
I tried hard not to lose myself in her voice and smell.
“Really,” I asked, trying hard not to sound
corny. She laughed and got up, “Really. Sorry for
ruining your picture.”
She brushed off some sand and walked back up the pathway and
disappeared around the bend.
