    Chapter Seven
    Jason's POV
I stole a glance at Matt suspiciously. He wasn't saying much. My hands gripped the steering wheel, and I noticed my knuckles were white. I loosened my grip and finally broke the silence.
"So why were you with my sister at the beach?" I eyed him.
"I was trying to cheer her up." He said casually.
"Why didn't you just take her home?" I tried again, getting impatient. I already have to drive to Drew's house and kick his a*s, I didn't need my best friend keeping things from me. Especially when it came to Drina.
"I don't know." I rolled my eyes. He was unbelievable.
"No, Matt, I want to know why. You like my sister?" I said more of a statement than a question. He took a second too long to respond and I knew.
"Of course not! Dude, she's your sister. She's like my sister." He said looking me straight in the eyes. I couldn't tell if he was a good liar, or was telling the truth. I decided to let it slide and focus on Drew.
"Fine." I said as we pulled into Drew's driveway. I quickly climbed out of the car and sprinted over to the door. I could feel the adrenaline inside of me, about to burst. I knocked ferociously and felt Matt right behind me.
"How can I help you?" A middle aged woman asked sweetly.
"Where's Drew?" I said growing more impatient with each second that passed.
"At his girlfriends house." She smiled. I took a step back, and arched my eyebrows.
"Who's his girlfriend, miss?" Already knowing the answer, but needing to hear it for myself.
    "Drina Evans."

    Chapter Five
"Why did you ever go out with him?" Matt mumbled. We were walking along the shore of the small beach, the sun was slowly setting and the pinks and oranges looked like something from out of a movie.
"He used to be really sweet." He looked at me incredulously.
"I know it's hard to believe but he really was. I think I was just lovestruck. He was my first.. well, everything. Until recently. So I guess that's why he's treating me like sh*t. He got what he wanted." I stated not making eye contact, too ashamed and embarrassed.
"I'm sorry." He said stopping in front of me forcing me to look in his eyes. I could tell he was being sincere.
I sighed wanting to get away from the subject. I didn't like thinking about it, it just reminded me of the biggest mistake I've made. "It's not your fault." I think he took the hint because he just nodded and started smiling.
"What?" I asked arching my eyebrows. He looked at me playfully and started to turn his head away casually. I cocked my head and stared at him suspiciously. He bolted towards me and picked me up bridal style.
"What are you doing!?" I laughed. He started running towards the water and I gasped as the refreshing water hit my skin. I opened my eyes under the water and swam towards him. He didn't see me, so I pulled his leg making him fall under. We made eye contact and I smiled at him. I finally went up for air and looked at the sunset.
"We should probably head home?" I suggested to him. I turned and noticed how close he was standing to me. He nodded and took a step closer. I leaned in slightly, and my eyes widened. What am I doing? This is my brothers best friend.
I stepped back, "Race you to the boat!" I rolled my eyes at how stupid that sounded but sprinted to the boat anyways.
"Hey! No! That's not fair!" I heard footsteps behind me. I laughed and climbed on.
"I won!" I smirked at him climbing in the passenger seat.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah." His face was in a pout but I could sense the humour in his voice. I gazed at him while he drove us back to the dock, he was so gorgeous. Why did he have to be my brother's best friend?

    Chapter One
"We're over. Seriously you're disgusting and I can't believe we dated for so long. You're worthless!" Drew screamed in my face. I just stared at him. Nobody had ever looked at me with such disgust in my entire life. Tears streamed down my face but I didn't bother wiping them. I didn't break the stare. I could feel my hands trembling, and knees ready to give out. I didn't even notice everyone staring at us. I slowly tore my gaze off of my now ex-boyfriend and walked out of the small diner. My pace began to quicken. I had never felt like this before. It felt like my heart had literally been stabbed and was about to explode. I didn't look back, I would never look back. I slowly made my way home, but remembering what had just happened along with all the memories we have had made it impossible. I stumbled to a tree along one of the busiest street in my small little town. I rested my head on my knees and cried. Two years wasted. I felt someone in my presence, and slowly lifted my head. My brother's best friend parked in the doctor's office I was in front of and walked towards me. He didn't say anything, but sat down next to me, pulled me close, and let me cry for what seemed like hours.

    Last Chapter !
    * 10 years later *
    Jay’s P.O.V.
I quietly walked down the stony old path, with Mikey’s little hand in mine. It was 10 years since Miranda died. I had roses in my other hand as I made my way towards Miranda’s grave. I saw a brunette standing in front of it.
    “Hello?” I questioned
“Oh, Hi.” She said as she wiped the tears from her face.
“Did you know her? I’m sorry, its just that I’ve never seen you before.”
“No she didn’t. It’s complicated. Matthew Jones and I used to date, he got a little obsessed with me. Actually really obsessed. I tried to break up with him, but when I did that he locked me in my room and wouldn’t feed me until I apologized. I started getting really scared. So I staged my own death, and paid an old lady to tell him I was murdered.” She looked nervously at her feet.
“Oh, wow!” I exclaimed. “So what’s your name?” I looked at her trying to get eye contact. She was really pretty.
    “Ari. And your Jay right?”
    “Yeah, short for Jason.”
“Look, I have to go. But I would really like to get to know you, and maybe we could get coffee sometime? Just talk and I don’t know, uh-” she nervously continued, I cut her off,
“It’s a date.” I smiled. I watched her walk off. I gazed intently at Miranda’s grave remembering the last thing she said to me in the I.C.U. “I love you, I want you to be happy. When you find someone right, take the chance. Take care of Mikey. Tell him I love him. It’s time for me to go. I love you Jason.”
I smiled a tear dropping down my face, as I read her grave.
    “Miranda Gage.
    1985-2011
    A brilliant mother,
    And a brave women-
    `Remember me and smile,
    For it’s better to forget
    Than remember me and cry.`”

    CHAPTER 12
    Jay’s P.O.V.
“If I can’t have her,” Matthew smiled “no one can.” He closed his eyes. The ambulance doctors ran across the ice, taking care of Miranda and checking his pulse.
“Dead.” They presumed. I whipped my head around.
“Matthew..” The doctor said. I nervously shook my head understandingly.
“and Miranda…?” I asked mentally preparing myself for the worst.
“Barely hanging on.” Another doctor stated. I watched as they carefully took her away on a stretcher. A doctor led me to a different ambulance, after I persistently argued, wanting to go with Miranda. I finally gave in, to dizzy to put up a fight. As I got in a cop walked up to my ambulance and said,
“It’s all over. She was brave.” They closed the doors and I gazed intently at the cop as we drove off. He was right, it was over. Miranda sacrificed her own life to save the lives of other woman. Hopefully now, the doctors could save her.

    CHAPTER 11
    Jay’s P.O.V
I ran as fast as I could, I saw the lake about 50 yards away. I saw Miranda push Matthew Jones into the water. I silently cheered. I didn’t realize he had a grip on her arm. I watched in horror as she went down with him.
“MIRANDA!” I screamed. I heard the cops running behind me. One shouting for another to get an ambulance. I reached the lake, and saw as her hand bolted up out of the water trying to get out. I ran to the hole and dipped my hand in, reaching out trying to find her. I peered in but couldn’t see, it was dark, pitch black. I gave the cops one last look, and there eyes went wide as I said,
“I’ll be out soon, pull.her.up.” I stated as I dove into the water. The water was freezing, I reached around trying to find life. I felt something grab my arm, and I peered around. It was her, I felt her hair brush against my face. I swam to the surface and got out of the lake freezing cold. I pulled her up. She was coughing and halfway out when she started to slide back down again.
“He’s holding on.” She sputtered in and out of consciousness.
“He’s pulling her down with him!” A cop shouted.
“No, he’s not gonna get her” I screamed, pulling as hard as I could. She lifted out of the water, with Matthew clutched to her leg, with a knife jabbed into her side.

    CHAPTER 10
    Miranda’s P.O.V.
One life to lose. I thought, as my body hit the ice cold water, him finally letting go of my arm as he sank down to the bottom. I could’ve saved him, but in the end he would’ve killed me and continued murdering innocent women. I couldn’t let that happen. It was only me that had to die. I was going to be the last woman he killed, and yet I kept fighting. I kept fighting to reach the top. To get out of the water. Trying to pull myself up before my muscles shut down. And I guess that’s when it all went black. When my life flashed before my eyes..

    CHAPTER 9
    Miranda’s P.O.V.
I was surrounded by trees. That’s all I knew, but I kept running. My chest burned, and my legs ached. I could feel the sweat running down my cold face. I knew I had to rest. I hid behind a tree, determined to only catch my breath. I heard distant foot steps, so I continued on my way. Branches clawing at my face, and my heels trudging into the snow. Each time I’d have to work extra harder to pull up. I heard him yelling something behind me, I ignored it.
“MIRANDA!” He shouted. This time closer, really close. I made the mistake of turning my head and there he was only a little out of reach. My foot hit the ground hard, and the heel broke. I ignored it, and kept moving. I turned forward and saw a frozen lake. I took my first step onto the lake, and heard Matthew lose his balance and fall. I kept running slowly. Finally I had no where to go, no where to run. I heard the loud mocking crack of the ice behind me, I took a step left. I gazed around. Melted ice to the left, and another forest to the right. And straight? Him. It was time to stop running, time to face him.
“Now, your trapped.” He laughed. I looked down at my feet and saw the ice breaking. He started to take a step towards me, and grabbed my arm. That ice made a loud crack and it finally gave out under his feet. I had to make the decision. To pull him towards me and save him. Or let him fall, and him drag me down with him.

    CHAPTER 8
    Miranda’s P.O.V.
    “Wh-what?” I stammered
“You heard me.. Undress.” He stated.
“Matthew… why do you want me to undress?” I gazed at him with fear filled eyes, trying to read him, but his face was stone cold.
“Simple, if I cant have you.. No one can.” He gestured towards the dress, hinting me to take it off. I glared at him.
    “No.” I replied.
“What?” He had a confused expression on his face, he stood up and started to reach into his pocket.
“I said no. I will not undress.” I inched my way towards the door. He turned away from me, and in a split second I reached for the doorknob and ran out.
“HEY!” He shouted. My feet were pounding against the pavement, all I focused on was the click of my heels, trying not to slip on the ice. I glanced back and saw him about 100 yards away, with something in his hand.
    Paul’s P.O.V.
    “No.” She said.
What did she mean no? It’s not like she had a choice.
“What?” I asked. I stood up and reached into my pocket looking for my knife. It wasn’t in there. I heard her reply something along the lines of “No, I wont undress.” I really didn’t hear, I was too preoccupied looking for my knife. I turned around, and began scanning the area. I heard the door open and slam. I whipped around and saw her running out the door. I ran to my room and grabbed a spare knife and some rope, but by the time I was out the door she was about 100 yards away.
    Jay’s P.O.V.
I sat at home watching Mikey. He was playing with some action figure. I nervously rubbed my eyes, and retreated to my room. I walked to the window, and looked out at the trees, the sun was setting. Where are you Miranda? I turned around and caught my reflection in the mirror. My eyes were blood shot, from crying. Mikey thought Mommy was on a trip. I made my way back to the living room.
“Mikey, ready for lunch?” I sighed.
*RING RING RING* I grabbed for the phone as fast as we could. And all it took were those five words.
    “We know where she is.”

    CHAPTER 6
    Miranda’s P.O.V
He told me what happened to Ari. I was shocked, and close to sad, but I remembered what he was doing to other girls. I gazed at his now eyes, shined by tears.
“Is that why, you leave woman tied to trees, so they can freeze to death, like Ari had to?” I choked out. He looked at me, surprised I would say that.
“How.. how did you know..?” He stuttered
I ignored the question. “Revenge?” I asked. He nodded his head slowly,
“I will never do that to you, Miranda. I think I-I-loveyou.” He quickly finished. My jaw dropped.
“Nice turkey.” I said meekly. Looking at my feet, and playing with the hem of my dress.
“You don’t love me.” He stated.
    “Sorry.”
“Why. I could give you anything you ask for, and I have treated you kindly. I even opened up to you, Miranda. Why”
“You kill woman, I am practically your hostage. Plus, I have a husband, and son. I cant just leave them behind. I don’t love you, because your abusive. And although your not hard to look at, your actions are too much, for any girl to love.” I stared at him, wondering if I was getting anywhere. He had a questionable look on his face so I continued, “I know now, that the car crash was no accident, and even though you didn’t do serious harm, I bruised some ribs and broke an arm, that still counts as hurting me. You don’t show me any love or compassion. And I don’t love a man for his money, or what he gives me. I love him for who he is. Not what he has. So no matter how much you give me. No matter how much you bribe me, I will never love you. I’m sorry, Matthew. But I think you should let me go, and move on. You don’t even have to turn yourself in. I wont tell anyone. We can be god damn friends if you’d like. As long as you stop killing or hurting woman..” I finished.
“Miranda, because I love you, I’ll let you go. Can we be friends?” He asked. I was shocked, I had no plan that this would work.
    “Yes, of course.” I smiled.
“Alright, I will let you go. But first undress.” He sighed.

    CHAPTER 6
    Miranda’s P.O.V.
He smacked me. That jerk smacked me. AGAIN. I stared down at the outfit. Well, it is beautiful. I stroked the dress, allowing the silk to run through my fingers. He is nice when I’m not being mean, and he’s kind of cute. With his brown shaggy hair, and his striking blue eyes. His tall muscular body, which smells of Axe. What am I thinking, I am his prisoner. This is a game to him. Plus, I love Jay.. and Mikey. I miss them. What if I never get out of here? What if he kills me? I picked up the dress, and pulled it over my head forgetting my ribs and arm. I winced in pain, but continued to get ready. I gazed around the room. What does he mean if I want anything from this grungy old room? There’s nothing to take. I quietly made my way to the door, while slipping on the heels. I turned the knob and to my delight it was unlocked. I poked my head out, and looked around. I walked out, wincing at each *click* the heels made. I turned a corner and was met by another hallway, he popped his head out of a room, and I jumped back.
“Ari..” He started to say, and then quickly corrected himself “Miranda.” He smiled “Right this way.” He took my hand and led me towards the dining room. “Sit, relax, take a breather.”
“Um, okay.” I said relaxing my tense shoulders.
“There, ya` go.” He laughed. I looked around the elegant dining room, then met his eyes. He held my gaze. He shook a bit, and finally said “I’ll be right back, with dinner.” He got up and silently made his way to the kitchen. I was so hungry, by the time he came out and gave me my food, I had dug right in.
“So, Ar-Miranda. Do you like the outfit?” He asked. I nodded, and continued eating.
“So, What’s your name?” I asked between mouth fulls.
“I’m Matthew, Matthew Jones. I like long walks on the beach, milkshakes, Hawaii-you,- and books.” He finished off quickly and saying you under his breath, half-hoping I wouldn’t notice.
    “You like me?” I choked.
    “Yes.”
    “Why?”
“Your beautiful, and nice. Your smart, and you remind me of someone…” He winced.
“Who..?” I asked. He looked at me with soft glossy eyes, and started to turn away.
“Matthew,” I asked softly, “ Who is she?”
“Was.” He replied. “ Who was she.” He whimpered.

    CHAPTER 4 Continued - Paul’s P.O.V. - flashback:
“What do you mean? She “froze to death”. No. That can’t be possible.” I panicked.
“You didn’t know” Maria asked, shocked. She pushed the microphone up close to my mouth.
“GET THAT OUTTA HERE.” I screamed pushing it away.
“Please- Matthew, babe,” Said another reporter with a jersey accent. “You really didn’t know?”
“One, im not your babe. Two no, I had no clue.” Tears started to sprout from my eyes. I started to close the door, when an old lady came up from behind the reporters and looked at me with a dead stare,
    “Murder.” She whispered.
“What?” I pulled her into the room and shut the door.
“She- was with… a girl. A brunette… the girl brought Ari to the top of the mountain.. Took her ski’s… Ari couldn’t get down… too slow… she froze.” The woman replied shakily.
“Oh God, not Ari. Not my beautiful Fiancé.”
“Fiancé? You weren’t engaged.” She stated. I pulled out a velvet box, and opened it, revealing a diamond ring. “I was going to propose, tonight.” I cried. The woman quietly let herself out, sighing at my great loss. I ran my finger over the diamond ring, and silently screamed, revenge.
    CHAPTER 5
    Paul’s P.O.V.
I gently placed the ring back down on the night stand, and walked to the mirror once again. My stomach growled, Miranda. I thought. She reminded me so much of Ari. My beautiful Ari. I miss her, SO much. I flipped my hair, and made my way to the hallway leading to Miranda‘s room. I gazed around, and finally my eyes met her door. I ran to the kitchen and made dinner. A Thanksgiving type feast. I walked back into my room, and went to Ari’s old closet. There was her favorite dress. A olive layered taffeta dress with a bow, & grey pewter heels, finally accented with her favorite Ismene necklace. ( outfit- http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/set?id=27437183 ) I grabbed the outfit, and walked to Miranda’s room. I knocked.
“What?” She growled. I rolled my eyes and walked in. I gently placed the outfit on the bed, next to her. I glanced around the shabby room, and was suddenly ashamed.
“Get dressed for dinner, and if there is anything in here you want to take, get it. You’re going into a new room.” I smiled.
“Why don’t you do me a favor, and let me the hell go?” She smiled sarcastically.
Why did she treat me like this? I was so nice, and I can give her anything she wants and she disrespects me. I don’t get it. She’s ungrateful. I smacked her, and stormed out of the room.

    CHAPTER 4
    Paul’s P.O.V.
It was 3:15. I was starving, even though I had eaten a big breakfast at 9:00. Instantly I thought of Miranda. She must be hungry. Maybe I should bring her food. What am I thinking, she is my prisoner. I paced back and forth in my small little room, across from Miranda’s. I looked in the mirror, fixed my shaggy brown hair and sat down. I looked at the nightstand. The ring sat there. Memories started flooding back to me, and I remembered what happened 5 fateful years ago.
“Here’s my promise, to give to you, that we will stay together. Forever.” I smiled. She took the ring and tucked her wavy brown hair behind her ears. I looked deep into her soft blue eyes. “I love you.” I said.
“It’s a promise ring, isn’t it?” She grinned.
“Yes. This is my gift, that whatever happens, I will always love you, Ari.” I took her hand and led her to the balcony. A fresh coat of snow had coated the old brown snow. I held her in my arms, and watched intently at the sunset.
“We should come here every year.” She smiled “The ski slopes are so fun, and being here with you. It’s just a dream come true.”
“Too bad, your not a good skier!” I teased. I brought her to a ski resort for out 3 year anniversary, thinking she knew how to ski.
“Hey!” She laughed “It’s still amazing, to be here.”
“I agree.” I kissed her, and soon fell asleep.
    ___
I woke up startled. There was a bunch of noise outside the door. I thought this was a CLASSY hotel. Annoyed, I rolled over. I noticed Ari wasn’t next to me. I started to panic. I jumped out of the bed, and ran to the door. I threw it open and saw all the reporters.
    “WHAT’S GOING ON?!” I screamed
“Hi, I’m Maria from Channel 11 News. Was Ari your girlfriend? Are you Matthew Jones?” She asked.
“Yes and yes. Why?” I panicked.
“She froze to death, practicing to ski.” She replied bluntly.

    CHAPTER 3
    Jay’s P.O.V
“WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU HAVE NO LEADS?!” I shouted over the four cops trying to calm me down. The police chief sat, ashamed, in the front of his office. He shrugged and put his hands on his head.
“I’m sorry,” He replied “There’s nothing we can do. This guy is good.”
    “So it is a man?”
“Well, he only takes women, and has had sexual contact with everyone of them. So yes, it is a man.”
“Find Her.” I said fiercely as I picked up Mikey, and stormed out of the useless police station. “Or I will.”
    Paul’s P.O.V
When I finally got “home“, I walked straight to Miranda’s room. She was the only thing I could think of. What’s wrong with me? I thought.
“Thanks for knocking.” She snapped. I stared at her, in shock. She wasn’t cowering in fear like the others,- or trying to seduce me.
“If you need something, knock on the door. You will eat breakfast at 8 o’clock sharp, lunch at noon, and dinner at 5:30.” I stated.
“Oh, ok cool. So I get to knock on my own door for help. Just the perfect life.”
I ran up to her and smacked her across the face. “Listen,” I said “I have a short temper. You don’t want to get me angry. Or I will kill you.”
    Miranda’s P.O.V
He stared at me with his ice cold eyes. Threatening to kill me, scared me, but I wouldn’t let him get the satisfaction he looked for. He would never get the best of me. I shrugged at him, “whatever.”
He pushed me down, and stormed out of the room. I got up, slowly. My ribs still ached. I fixed the fire and stared at the door. I tried to open it, Locked. I thought. Just My Luck.

    The Keeper.
    CHAPTER 22
    Miranda’s P.O.V
I woke up and looked around. I tried to sit up and I realized my ribs ached. What Happened? I tried to push myself to sit up. A sharp pain shot through my arm and I yelped and fell back.
A man stepped out of the shadows of the barely lit room. He stooped down over me and smiled. Then backed up, lit a faint fire in the small fireplace, and sat in a creaky rocking chair.
“Good your awake. Before you start bombarding me with questions like every other girl here,” I looked at him then looked around “ever other girl here” rang through my mind.
“Yes, Miranda, others are here. It’s funny the news are calling me “The Keeper”. I supposedly collect girls, torture them for a few months and then kill them.” He smiled
“So which part is fake?” I asked, buying time and information.
“Don’t worry about that. All you need to know is that you’re here and there’s no getting out. So get used to it. By the way, I’m not stupid enough to tell you my real name, but you can call me Paul. Anyways, I see your ribs are healing nicely. So is your arm.”
I looked down and saw the bandages on my ribs. And the cast on my arm. I stared him down and contemplated what I should do. “ What do you want?” I asked defeated.
“Miranda, you were getting too much information about me, plus you are very pretty. You were just asking me to take you.” He quietly got up and left the room. I pushed myself out of the hard spring bed, and looked around. I looked out the small window. Full of frost, and had bars on it so if I broke it, I would still be locked in. Only colder. I pressed my hot forehead against the window and thought of Jay and Mikey. I knew I had to get out of here, myself. They would never find me. I opened my eyes and peered outside. I was in the middle of nowhere. In the midst of the woods. Trees ran miles through, thick and dense. I’m never getting out of here, I sighed.
    Paul’s P.O.V
It’s time. Another death. The cops will be even more stressed. Another step behind.
I walked into Catherine’s room. She was always in love with me. She always loved the fact that I took her, and left her “friend” to die.
    “Undress.” I told her.
She smiled at me “ Don’t you wanna do that for yourself?”
“Just do it.” I spat at her. I waited until she was done.
“Okay.” She finally said. I blind folded her, and pushed her out the door.
“Let’s go.” I led her out the door, and when the cold air hit her she stopped dead in her tracks.
“You don’t want to do this, baby.” She whined. I knew she knew what was coming. They always did. I dug the knife in her back, only deep enough to leave a scratch. She jumped forward. I made her walk to a tree at the top of a hill about 15 miles away. She was bluish and fainted a couple of times.
“Please,” She cried “Please, let me go!”
I finally stopped at the top of the hill. I pushed her against the tree, and tied her to it and made sure the knot was just out of reach of her hands. I knew for the rest of her short life she would try to untie herself. It always amused me. I walked back and laughed at her pleas for help. Another death, I thought. But still not fulfilling.
