Skylar
They were late, as usual.
Delaney and I were waiting in front of our dorm for Connor
and Dylan to pick us up. Laney, that’s what Dylan and
I call her, and I went way back; to 6th grade.
She really is my best friend.
“They said they would be here in fifteen
minutes,” I said, letting out a frustrated sigh. I
checked my Blackberry for the seventieth time and Delaney
agreed with her own sigh. We were both excited for this
trip. Spring break would officially be in full swing once
we got to the airport. I rolled my luggage around in a
circle, emphasizing my boredom. I snapped my gum and blew a
bubble. Delaney’s phone rang.
“Hey, where are you guys?” she asked.
“Oh, okay. Fine. Sure, whatever as long as we
don’t miss out flight I’m good.” She
ended the call and said, “They’re gonna be late
because they were checking their e-mail for the hundredth
time. I swear these job offers are gonna drive me crazy as
much as it’s driving them nuts.”
I laughed. Connor and I had been together for about a year
and a half, although we had known each other since
kindergarten. We met at a party in college sophomore year
and I knew that he had changed from being that obnoxious
kid all through grade school. Connor really cared about
this opportunity, if he got job. He wants to major in
accounting and I totally support his decision. It’s
just that sometimes he gets carried away with his
work.
Junior year was starting to die down and everyone was eager
for school to end. Going to school at NYU was different
than most. There wasn’t a campus and most of the
buildings were scattered around the city. I had gotten an
early acceptance letter and accepted their offer right
away. I had always wanted to go there. Ever since my
brother, Daniel, went ten years before me, I knew NYU was
for me.
“They’re here,” Delaney said, looking at
her phone. “They’re in the lobby.” We
picked up our stuff and rolled our way to the
elevator.
“There they are,” I heard a voice say. I
searched the crowded room and found Connor and Dylan
pointing at us. I smiled and pushed my way through the
horde of people.
“I guess everyone’s going somewhere for spring
break,” said Delaney, noticing, too, that there were
a lot more people than usual in the lobby. I nodded my head
in agreement.
Connor gave me a quick kiss on the cheek and took one of my
bags. “You do realize we are only going for six days,
not a whole month,” he said lifting my luggage bag
over and over again. I stuck my tongue out at him and we
all stepped into the light, spring air.
