Chapter 2
Part 1
~~Lily Hart, 7 (Annie in Annie)~~
I sat in a huge dressing room, my knees shaking. My mom sat next to me, her thick fire-red hair in an artful bun. I shivered. Gosh! It was so cold in the dressing room! Mom’s eyes lifted up from her magazine and she smiled at me. I gave a watery smile back. Maybe my parents were right. I was too young for shows! I shouldn’t have begged as much for just one audition for my seventh birthday present. I sighed took a deep breath. This wasn’t even an audition for a show anymore, it was television! I was so nervous.
“Lily Hart?” I looked up. A thin blonde woman was waiting by the hallway that led to the interview room. My mother squeezed my hand. I stood up, legs shaking, and followed the lady down the hall.
I stepped into the interview room, my thick, strawberry-blonde hair straightened and my wide green eyes lined in charcoal-colored eyeliner and shadowed in lavender. I placed a bright smile on my face as I plopped into the plush maroon couch. The camera was focused on me, and the light below it was blinking. The reporter smiled at me.
“Hi there to all the viewers on TLC! I’m here with Lily Hart, who plays Annie in the Broadway production of Annie in New York City! The first episode is all about auditions. Tell us about your audition, Lily. Take us through your ordeal.”
I smiled and began slowly, my voice a slight lisp, pretending I knew what the word ordeal meant. “Well, when I was six, I wanted to be a star really, really bad! But mom and dad said I had to finish school first. That made me sad, but then on my seventh birthday, they gave me a surprise! I was allowed to audition for Annie! It was my first audition and I was really scared, but we flew from our home in Hawaii all the way to New York City and auditioned. I was really scared, but I pretended I wasn’t. The next week, I got a letter that said I made it passed the first cuts! So then I auditioned again, and I got the part two weeks later. Now I’m homeschooled, and sometimes I miss my friends at school, but when I’m too old to be Annie anymore, I get to go home. I visit a lot, too.”
The reporter nodded and smiled at my eagerness. He asked more questions about my auditions, and then turned off the camera. “That’s all for today, Miss Lily.”
“Okay. Thanks!” I replied brightly, and skipped out of the room, skirting around a girl with thick dark curls in a neat bun on top of her head and stepping up to my mom, who was waiting in the hallway. Wow, she looked so much older than me! I wondered how old the other girl in the show was.
Peeking out into the dressing room, I saw a girl with perfect brown waves a too much makeup standing up, her mother fretting around her. Ugh. She reminded me of a pageant mom. That girl too, looked so much older than me! I tried not to worry as my mom led me out of the studio and to our rental car.
