By My Side
Chapter Six
"Kendall!" I hear Kyla shout, as she burst into my backyard, where I was in the pool.
I hopped out of the pool, and grabbed a towel.
"Yes?" I asked, ringing the water out of my hair.
"So how was your dinner last night?" Kyla asked, waggling her eyebrows.
I grinned as I mentally slapped myself for forgetting to call Kyla last night.
I knew I was forgetting something.
"It was..nice." I simply said.
Then again, there wasn't much to say. I met my neighbors, big whoop.
"Was I right? Were they cute?!" Kyla shouted, shaking my shoulders as she waited for answers.
"Why don't you come see for yourself? My mom told them we'd help unpack today." I grinned.
Kyla's face lit up like a little kid on Christmas.
"I have a date with Harry, but I could reschedule!" she squealed, hopping up and down.
I laughed at how childish she was acting, and shook my head.
"Hold on, Ken. Let me call him really quick." she said, then bolted into the house.
I sat down in the lounge chair beside me, and began laughing again. Except this time, I wasn't the only one.
As I heard somebody laughing with me, I jerked up, only to see Ian hopping over the fence that divided our house.
He grinned widely, "Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you."
My nervously tensed face softened, and another smile formed on my face.
"It's no problem. I'm just not used to having people randomly break into my yard." I directed towards him.
Ian laughed nervously, and sat in the second lounge chair beside me.
"Yeah, sorry about that. I got a little bit bored." he shrugged.
I raised an eyebrow, as he poured himself a glass of water from the pitcher my mother left out hear earlier.
"So you decide to come to my house, unannounced?" I asked, puzzled.
I'd only officially met him yesterday, and he was already breaking into my backyard?
Then again, his family did just move here, he could easily be looking for a friend, right?
"That's the plan." he grinned, leaning back in his chair.
I shrugged, and did the same, letting my body soak up the sun.
The second I shut my eyes, however, I felt somebody grab ahold of me, yanking me off the chair.
"Uh, who's that?" Kyla asked quietly, nodding over towards Ian.
I grinned slyly at her. "That's my new neighbor, Ian."
I struggled to hold back from bursting out laughing as Kyla's mouth dropped.
"He's, gorgeous." she finally let out, gazing at him.
I couldn't help it, I started to laugh.
"Too bad you have Harry." I winked at her.
Kyla's eyes narrowed at me, and she smiled to me.
"What Harry doesn't know, won't kill him. I can look at other guys, I just can't touch." she warned.
I couldn't help but smile. There were some times where she was actually funny.
"Kendall, I'll be right back." Ian said from behind me.
I turned around and nodded, before he walked off.
"Kendall!" Kyla shouted as he disappeared, "how could you let him just leave like that?!"
I looked at Kyla, confused.
"Because he said he'd be right back?" I answered, unsure.
Kyla paused, then nodded. "Oh, okay then."
A few days later, Kyla and I went to the beach, as we usually do.
But this time, she insisted I invite Ian, since she promised Harry he could come.
I wasn't to angry with the idea since I'd come to know Ian better, since our mothers had been around each other nearly everyday.
"Just be by my house by, say 11:30?" I had told Ian through the phone, the night before.
He agreed.
Now, it was almost 12:15 and he still was nowhere in sight. Which is funny because he lives right next door.
"I'm here!" I heard him shout, as he ran into the house.
I laughed, and rolled my eyes. "I guess you still go by the whole breaking and entering rule."
"Ha ha, very funny." Ian laughed sarcastically, "but for your information, I overslept."
I widened my eyes, pretending to act interested.
"Yeah yeah, whatever. Come on, let's go." I said, gripping tightly to pull him out the door.
"Was there a need to nearly rip my arm from my body." Ian asked, as I started my car.
I laughed as he moved his arm around a few times. I guess I didn't know my own strength.
"Yes, you were late." I replied, then focused on my driving.
Only minutes later did we get to the beach, luckily.
Usually, on hot July days like this, the beach would be packed from toddlers to people older than my grandparents.
Everybody loved the perfect beach day, no matter who you were.
"Come on, slowpoke. Before I age here." I giggled, as I waited impatiently for Ian to get out of the car.
I could already tell this was the beginning of a great friendship.
