at first sight
chapter one ; part two
“I better be going, I’ll probably see you around, it’s a small town.” He laughs, walking away into the small crowd of people. I start to look for my mom. I see her tired eyes, and lead her to get our luggage. I grab my suitcases, and she grabs hers. We make our way to the front, where it leads to a small parking lot. We find a car with a sign on it, labeled Ms. Kathy James and family. We walk to the car, and pile in our luggage.
She types in the address into the GPS, and we ride for about five minutes. We’re lead to a small house, that sits on the coast. It’s a dark blue tinted gray color. It has a small deck in the back. I run inside. It has a small family room, that leads into a kitchen. Off the kitchen is a small bathroom, and a laundry room. I run up the stairs, and pick a light blue colored room, with a window that leads to a part of the roof I can sit on. I put down my suitcase, and help my mom with putting stuff in her room.
She has a tan room, with a small bathroom connected to it. She loves the view, and is happy that she got the bigger room. Once we’re done un-packing clothes, and small furniture, we start un-loading the big furniture.
I carry in the last box, and plop down on the crisp white couch. My mom calls for take-out, and I flick on the television.
“Ember,” my mom calls. “It’ll be awhile until we get some food and whatnot, so why don’t you explore around town?”
“Alright,” I smile. “Thanks mom.” I run upstairs, and go through my clothes. I pull out a tank-top, and some shorts, and put on some new flip-flops. I walk out the back door, and find a spot at the beach. Instead of sitting down, I decide to go for a walk. I take a left to the road, revealing a small café, and a few stores. I walk until I find a store that looks good to stop at. I feel my phone vibrate and check it.
Text from Mom: have fun, be back by seven.
I reply, and walk over to the café. I see Jake with a girl, and another boy. Jake and the girl are smiling, and holding hands. “Hey, Ember!” Jake smiles, and waves me over. “Guys, this is Ember, she’s new here. Wanna chill with us?”
“Sure.” I laugh, and sit down next to the guy. He smirks, and scoots over to me.
“Ember, this is Chace, and this is my girlfriend, Britt.” Jake laughs. I wave to Britt, she smiles, and says hi.
After a little bit of talking, Jake invites me to go to the shore with them. I agree, and walk along Chace’s side on the way down. “How are you liking it here?” He asks. He runs a hand through his dark hair, and adjusts his shirt.
“It’s beautiful.” I smile.
“The sunset here,” He smiles. “It’ll leave you speechless.” He laughs. We find a spot in the sand next to Jake and Britt. I feel my phone vibrate, and I check the clock. 7:35, crap. I get up from the sand.
“I have to go...” I sigh.
“Wait,” Chace gets up. “Party tonight, down here, you in?” He asks.
“Totally.” I laugh.
“It’s our annual masquerade, so wear a cute dress and a mask.” Britt laughs. I run back to my house, and open the door. My mom is sitting on the countertop eating a piece of pizza, while watching a movie.
“Sorry! I lost track of time...” I sigh, and grab a piece of pizza from the box. “Can I go to a party tonight?”
“Where?” She raises an eyebrow. “When?”
