chapter 2~
"Hey, can I give you a ride home?"
I looked up from my book, finding the same brown eyed boy that I'd encountered earliar, standing in front of me.
"No, I'm fine." I sighed.
"I 'd like to walk home if you don't mind."
"I actually wanted to talk to you a little more." He admitted, pursing his rosy lips.
"Can I take you someplace to eat?"
My stomach growled beneath me, and I gulped, nodding.
As we drove into town, he turned up the car stereo, nodding his head to the music.
I watched him warily as he smiled in my deriction, smoothening his sunkissed blonde hair.
"I never did catch your name." I said, turning down the music a tad.
He looked up, lingering on me a moment.
"It's Toby." He said, his eyes darting back to the road.
"I thought she would have told you about me."
I furrowed my brow, tilting my head to the side.
"What do you..."
"We're here!" Toby interupted, parking his truck to the side of the road.
He led me into a small ice cream parlor with bright neon colored walls and cool air conditioning.
"What can I get you kids?" And older woman asked, walking over to our table.
"I'll have an expresso cookie, and she'll have a triple chocolate chunk." He confirmed, tapping his hands on the granite counter.
She nodded, giving us a wink before walking away.
She returned quickly, setting the small cups of icecream down.
"So.." Toby began, trailing off.
"I don't really know exactly how to start this conversation.."
He stopped talking, shoveling a large scoup of sandy brown colored icecream into his mouth.
"I'll start it for you." I confirmed, crossing my arms sternly.
"How did you know Ashley?"
He gulped, laughing nervously.
"We were, um, kind of serious about eachother." He said quickly, his eyes becoming wet and glassy.
I hoped that he wouldn't start crying.
"You mean, you guys were dating?" I asked, suddenly more interested in the conversation.
He nodded, biting down on the edge of his lip.
I smiled, although I felt sick to my stomach.
Why didn't Ashley tell me she was dating someone?
I thought we told eachother everything.
"I first met her at a summer camp, and we connected instantly." he started, his eyes focused on something beyond me.
"I never...never got a chance to say."
He stopped, holding a hand over his face as heavy sobs lurched from inside him, his body shaking.
To my suprise, I felt myself reaching out my hand, grabbing his.
He held on firmly, as if I were the only thing he had in the world to cling onto.
As if I were his only hope.
He looked up suddenly, his eyes red, full of pain.
"I never got a chance to say that I loved her."
