    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    "JANUARY! JANUARY! GOD, SOMEONE GRAB JANUARY!"
    There was pure desperation in her voice and in her eyes. The woman's face, contorted, as she sobbed and screamed and tried to run over, kicking in protest as the man carried her away. There was screaming and pounding, figures zooming past in blurs just outside the white door, with a jarring red color splattered across it. The yelling competed with the loud beep of an IV. Trying to claw over the man's shoulders, the woman finally collapsed in defeat before giving one last glance over.
    "I'M SO SORRY, JANUARY. I'M SORRY."
    out of the rubble
    chapter one
    - kai -
    _______________________________________________________________________________
    There's a prologue, in case you're CONFUSED AND UNINFORMED.
    _______________________________________________________________________________
    "Damnit, Kel." I cursed.
    The "clinic" was the biggest tent in the facility. There was concrete for the walls in some parts, and supposedly air-tight seals in some rooms. Which was good I suppose.
    "Stephan?" I called out, I was getting dizzier by the second.
    I ventured from the waiting room (basically an empty room with a chair in the corner and a tiny crumbling desk) and made my way down the hallway, leaning on the walls for support. Kel was right, I felt sick.
    "Stephan!" I yelled again, holding an arm over my mouth in a pointless attempt to stop myself from being sick.
    There was a pang of pain coming from my stomach and I keeled over and crossed my arms over it.
    "Ste-"
    "Heeeey, Kai." Stephan said, catching me before I fell.
    I gave a weak thumbs up in greeting, catching my breath.
    "Come on." He pushed me towards the door at the end of the hall. "Glad to see you found your wat back. I thought we were going to have to send out search parties without our tech genius!" He continued, chuckling.
    "What's wrong with me?" I managed to get out.
    "Well, judging by the reasonably sized bloody welt on your head, you probably have a concussion of some sort, and waking from the concussion followed immediatly by a lot of physical activity isn't the healthiest thing. Radiation poisoning and adrenaline loss probably didn't help much either. Also, you're apparently losing blood all of a sudden from a cut on your stomach. "
    I noticed the blood all over my hands. Great.
    "Here." Stephan shoved some pills down my throat, which I swallowed reluctantly.
    "What were those for?" I asked.
    "To knock you out, basically." He said, smiling.
    "Oh."
    I woke up, again.
    At least this time I was laying in bed.
    Not for long.
    I sat up, Or at least tried to. It was more like sitting up, making a couple inhuman part screaming, part moaning noise, and then proceeding to flop back down onto the mattress with a sigh.
    Ouch.
    I examined the various bandages that had been used while I was out. There was a slightly bloodsoaked wrapping around my ribcage, and a patch of cloth on my cheek where there was radiation burning. Cool.
    I moved my head to look across the room, you know the way that grossly distorts your chin and hurts your neck? It was neccessary. Kel was standing in the corner, leaning against the wall, legs crossed, talking to Stephan. She said something about being near an explosion that went off by the facility. She glanced over my way and added a quick "Oh and Kai's up."
    I rolled my eyes.
    "Did you find anybody, Kel?" She knew what I meant by "anybody".
    "Nope. We're sending out another search party later today though, specifically for Melany, actually. We figured you would want to come." She replied, voice softer than usual. "And we need your help anyway."
    Stephan walked over and helped me over to the door. I yelped.
    Kel chuckled and looked down at me. I glared at her.
    "Sorry, bruised ribs, you shouldn't even be going. Kelly." He said, looking at Kel. "And we can take this off now." He ripped something off my neck. I looked at his hand.
    "You use Bandaids, Stephan?"
    "You underestimate the power of bandaids. Now go."
    I was pushed out of the tent by 2 pairs of hands, followed by Kel. I looked at her for instruction. This was her domain.
    "Come on, follow me."
    I always do, anyways.
