The First Summer I Believed
Chapter One
It was our first night together at the lake, we were all sitting at the edge of the lake, around a campfire, eating s'mores.
"Hollie," Tori asked, "How's gymnastics going?"
"Ummmmm....." I stall.
Dad intrupts me, "She made it to regionals," he said proudly
But before anyone could get too excited I mumble, "Yeah, and then fell off the beam, and cracked a rib," I roll my eyes, and stare at the ground.
"She's got the scar to prove it," Jesse adds
Anthony laughed, "How'd you get a scar?"
I look off in the distance, "I, uh, had some surgery."
Everyone threw their head back in laughter, "It's not funny!" I protest, " It hurt!" But it was no use, soon I was laughing too.
"Ok, let's see it," Bristol says too excitedly.
I sigh and raise my shirt to revile a three inch scar on my rib cage.
"Nice!" Bryan says leaning in to get a better look.
"Stop!" I swat him away, "You're such a creep! You know that?"
"So have you practiced since your fall?" Tori asked
"No, we found a trainer around here, I will start back up in a week or so."
"Well, in that case, " Bristol takes my marshmallow roasting stick."
"Hey," I frown.
"You'll thank me later," she said with a smile as she took a big bite of gooeyness.
Around 11:30 Tori and Dad went inside. Avery had fallen asleep in Dad's lap an hour earlier with marshmallo all over her face. That left the five kids by the lake.
Later, Jesse's phone wrang, and he left us to talk to his girl friend, Sage.
I sigh and fall back on the grass, "He's never home anymore," I whisper. Jesse and I used to be so close, "It's like he replaced me with Sage...."
I put my head on Bristol's lap, and she started to braid my hair, "I'm sure it's a phase."
"What if it's not?"
"You'll figure something out Hollie," Anthony said quietly. I had forgotten that he was even here. But before I could respond, he was half way to the house....
