You gotta start out as friends and to reach that stage you need to show him that you are interested in being close to each other.
Try to get to know him even more & try making him talk to you about personal stuff.
Maybe he's more complicated than you think, you never know.

You can start off by saying hello in the hallways, smilling at him, asking about his classes & little stuff like that. Try to have small conversations with him everyday but don't over do it 'cause it will seem stalker-ish.
In a few days or so, he may start opening up to you.
If not, then you stop. Don't talk for about 2/3 days. He'll start chasing you 'cause guys absolutely LOVE attention.

After that, show him who you are, tell him about the things you've been through & just open up to hi.
Off course you gotta make sure he's trustworthy.
