    Hands clutched over her chest, attempting to force a beat. The droning, final, heart-breaking beep deafening him and crushing him. Her lifeless body moving with any force that moved her. Sweat piling up on his brow as he struggled to keep her alive. The relentless flat line trying to tell him what he won’t hear. Every second, her life swims farther away and he chases after it. Hands shove him away to help and he fights them. He is unmovable, not relinquishing his position. The colors leaving her face by the minute, the heat leaving her body quicker.
    The whine finally breaking through to his senses, he allows the hands to shove him away as he allows the tears to leave his eyes. His footsteps weigh tons as he shuffles his feet out of the room, out of the life he wants. All of his existence left when the other car lost control. Her body, through the windshield, took his soul. His scream of anger, of pain, took his voice. His face settled into the mask he would wear forever, the mask of what he lost. As his ears shut down, with the rest of his senses, he barely hears the sound he had been unconsciously listening for was heard. “Time of death, 21:43.” Composure finally leaves him as sobs break through his chest. Aching spasms rack through his body as his grief, at last, comes through.
    The memories of what is now lost chased throughout his mind. The smile that never failed to bring one from him. The laugh that was a plague. A kiss that sent electric shocks in his body. All the hopes of the future shattered before his eyes. The sight of her in the princess dress of her dreams walking arm and arm with her father down the aisle. The sight of her round belly under her favorite sweatshirt as she read Dr.Suess. The miniature version of her face pasted on the baby cradled in her arms. Crushing him, the memories killed him like the tractor trailer should’ve.
    At the same time as he falls to the ground, unable to hold himself up, a sound he would never believe came through his wall. A solitary, lonely, sound that silenced the whole room. Beep.
