    Chapter 25
The only memory I had with Travis before the two of us got to know each other was when we were in the first grade, where he used to throw pink crayons at me.
Even back then, he was quite the troublemaker himself.
His parents were always called in by the teacher because he used to talk back to her and used inappropriate words, that I didn't even know the meaning to until I was in middle school.
But of course, his parents never did show up.
Instead, a woman wearing a stale grey uniform always came to Travis' aid.
I've always thought that she was Travis' mother, but I didn't know until now that she was actually his maid.
"My mother wouldn't be ever caught dead in a maid's uniform." Travis snorted, once I asked him about it. "The only thing she would ever wear is stupid, designer crap."
I let out a chuckle, before raising an eyebrow. "Designer clothing is expensive, for your information."
Travis narrowed his eyes at me, before shrugging. "That's why she wears it." he muttered. "Apparently, wearing expensive clothes gives you a higher status now, whatever the hell that means."
I was in Travis' house that afternoon, where we just came back from school.
We had the television on, but we were barely paying attention to it.
The front door from the lobby suddenly opened, making a slamming noise that startled Travis and I.
I gave him a curious look, but Travis seemed just as confused as I was.
"Are your parents home?" I asked, whispering.
Travis shook his head, as he stood up, straightening out his wrinkled hoodie.
"I'll go check." he muttered under his breath. "Wait here."
After Travis disappeared out of the living room, moments later, I heard a loud crash.
"Dylan!" I heard Travis' angry voice shout. "Why do you always have to break something every time you're here?!"
Frowning, I got up from the couch, making my way towards where the sound was coming from.
I first spotted Travis' scowl directed at the blonde male behind him, then I noticed the glass that was shattered all over the floor.
"Man, sweet!" the blonde, Dylan, suddenly grinned when he saw me. "You got a booty call? Because I could totally use-"
Travis suddenly gave Dylan a hard punch across the chest, making him wince.
A small smile appeared across my face, as Travis glared at the blonde.
"You're an idiot, Dylan." Travis hissed under his breath. "This is Riley, my gir- friend. She's my friend."
Dylan's jaw suddenly dropped, as I noticed the piercing that he had on his lower lip. "No way, man, she's single?" he smirked, reaching his hand out for me to shake. "I'm Dylan, by the way."
I frowned, glancing over towards Travis, before taking Dylan's hand hesitantly.
"I'm Riley." I said with a weak smile across my face.
"You're Riley?" Dylan asked, raising an eyebrow. "Don't you mean beautiful?"
My cheeks turned red, as I looked over at Travis, who was rolling his eyes at Dylan.
"Dylan, she's not interested." Travis decided for me, making me snap my eyes towards him.
Who was he to make decisions for me?
I narrowed my eyes at him, before Travis shot Dylan an impatient look. "What are you doing here anyways?"
Dylan looked between Travis and I nervously, before giving him a bitter smile.
    "I need money, bro."

    Chapter 23
I felt numb and paralyzed, as I stared out at the ocean before my eyes.
Since it was nearly winter, the waves were sending harsh winds towards the shore, pulling my hair out of my neck.
I closed my eyes, as I felt shivers being send down my spine from the chilliness.
My mind still wasn't able to register the fact that Scarlet and Travis were together at one point in their lives, whether it was a fling or not.
The two of them slept together in the past, yet none of them bothered to tell me this whole time.
I clenched my fists so tightly, as I felt my nails dig into my palms.
"You've been ignoring my calls." a voice suddenly said from behind, making me turn around.
My eyes locked into Travis' green orbs, as I felt my heart sink to the pit of my stomach.
He was coming closer to me with each step he took.
I was scared that if he didn't stop any time soon, I wasn't going to be able to control myself.
I was in love with Travis, but I knew that I couldn't be.
He hooked up with Scarlet, and left her.
"I've been busier than usual." I lied right through my teeth.
Travis shoved his hands in his pockets, and I was almost a hundred percent sure that he was fumbling with his pack of cigarettes.
Travis stared at me, long and hard, before he unclenched his jaw.
"Really?" he asked, with a hint of a sarcastic tone on the tip of his tongue. "Because I was starting to believe that you hate me."
I stared down at the damp grains of sand that were below my feet, licking my dry lips.
I knew that no matter what, I wasn't going to be able to hate Travis.
    "I don't hate you." I muttered.
"Really? I was sure that you were going to once Scarlet told you all those lies." Travis said, his voice so calm and collected.
My eyes snapped up, as if if were an immediate instinct.
"What are you talking about?" I whispered. "You're the one who left Scarlet after the two if you slept."
Travis rolled his eyes, before letting out a dramatic breath of air. "I was drunk and high, Riley." he looked at me, dead in the eyes. "I don't even remember what happened that night. Besides, it was two years ago. I can't believe Scarlet's still talking about it."
I resisted the urge to glare at him, as I gulped. "But she loved you."
Travis groaned with frustration, before running a hand through his messy locks.
"I don't care about her, Riley." he whispered. "God damn, I care about you."
I stared at Travis, long and hard.
My heart was beating out of my chest, as my hands shook by my sides.
Travis Kapone, the guy who was the complete opposite of what I was, was telling me that he cares about me.
I was happy, yes I was, but I was also confused as to where this leads us.
I was in love with him, and he cared about me.
"I'll see you in school." Travis suddenly said, when I didn't say anything back to him.
He held my gaze for a moment longer, before a faint smile appeared on the corners of his lips.
"And I'll bring you Oreo's." Travis smirked. "They're your favorite, aren't they?"

    Chapter 18
I woke up the next morning in a room that wasn't mine.
I suddenly remembered that I was forced to stay over at Travis' house, because of the hurricane that was literally knocking over trees outside.
I peered over Travis' window, noticing that it was drizzling lightly outside, but the storm was gone.
I suddenly stared down, noticing an arm wrapped around my waist.
I looked over at Travis, who was still sleeping beside me, his bare chest peeking through the sheets.
My cheeks suddenly turned bright red, as Travis stirred in his sleep, snuggling closer towards me.
I felt the hard planes of his stomach being pressed against mine, as my breath hitched.
I started to feel uneasy and nervous, as Travis fingers tickled my side.
Why was I feeling like this?
This emotion was so new and raw to me.
My eyes suddenly went wide, as my heart hammered against my chest with realization.
I think I was in love with Travis.
All along, when I was hanging around him, or even talking to him, I hadn't realized that little by little, I was slowly falling for him.
I stared back at Travis' pale face, noticing a single loose strand of hair that was falling on his eyes.
My hands itched to brush it away, as they rose up shakily.
Once my fingers brushed against his forehead briefly, Travis' eyes snapped open.
I jumped back, as my heard raced against my chest.
"You scared the living-" I started off.
But, I was cut off once I noticed that Travis had sat up, with a wide smirk across his lips.
It didn't help either that he was completely shirtless.
"Were you touching me in my sleep?" he asked with amusement twinkling in those stupid green eyes of his.
My mouth suddenly felt dry, as I stared at him with disbelief.
"You're kidding me, right?" I choked, giving him a sudden glare.
I reached over at my pillow, tossing it directly at his face. "I wasn't touching you, you pervert!"
Travis laughed, as he raised his arms up to defend himself.
"Sure doesn't seem like it, Riley!" he teased. "Admit it, you liked touching me. That's why you're so red right now!"
My eyes widened, as my hands flew up to touch my cheeks.
Sure enough, they were blazing red and hot.
"You're unbelievable!" I snapped, suddenly getting up from Travis' bed.
I began to storm out of his room, crossing my arms.
Who was he to accuse me of touching him?
Before I got out of his room, though, I felt Travis' arms wrap around my waist, pulling me backwards.
I fell back on his bed, my back pressed against his chest.
He buried his face into my shoulders, making my turn bright red.
"Don't go." he muffled against my neck.
    And I didn't.

    Chapter 12
    Scarlet's Point of View
"Okay girls, remember to bring in any pastries for the bake sale tomorrow if you want new uniforms!" the head cheerleader, Lauren reminded us, as we all headed out of the cheerleading meet.
I stared down at the sterling silver watch that was latched around my left wrist, noticing that there was still a good ten minutes before lunch ended.
I made my way over to the cafeteria, wondering if Riley was going to be there.
As I stepped in the lunch room, my eyes scanned our usual lunch table, but I noticed that it was empty.
I frowned, wondering if Riley might've skipped out on lunch to go to the library.
Just as I was about to leave to check the library, my eyes caught onto the far back of the cafeteria.
My eyes stared over to Travis Kapone's, as he stared at the girl who had her back faced to me with an intent look.
As I stared closer, I noticed the familiar brown wavy hair.
Riley was sitting with Travis Kapone.
I suddenly felt anger boiling up inside of me, as I dug my nails into my palms.
Didn't I already warn Riley about Travis?
She was supposed to be my best friend and understand.
Rolling my eyes, as I turned my back on the lunch room, storming out.
My heels clicked its way down the hallways loudly, as I bit the insides of my cheeks.
I was going to make sure that Travis and Riley stay away from each other.
    ***
I walked up to the front steps of Travis' mansion house, the one that I've been to once before.
I felt my stomach churning as I pressed on the doorbell, waiting for an answer.
A moment later, the door swung open, revealing Travis.
I stared into those same green eyes that I was once in love with before.
"Scarlet." Travis hesitantly muttered, before closing the door behind him. "Why are you here?"
I crossed my arms, glaring at the so called bad boy. "You know why." I hissed. "I want you to stay away from Riley."
Travis stared at me with his eyebrows raised, before he let out a smirk.
"No can do, Scarlet." his eyes sparkled with amusement. "Sorry."
My blood rushed to my cheeks, as I felt myself fume with anger.
"You're only going to hurt her, like you hurt me." I whispered.
Travis snorted, before he rolled his eyes.
"If you've forgotten, Scarlet, you and I hooked up once." he harshly spat. "We're nothing more than that."
I felt my heart drop, but I wasn't going to let this jerk get the best of me.
"You don't mean that." my voice came of soft.
Before I knew it, my hands flew up to Travis' bare chest.
I blame him for never wearing a shirt under his hoodies.
I inched closer to him, pressing Travis' against his front door.
I closed my eyes, breathing in his minty yet smoky scent, remembering the night we shared.
"I know you still love me." I whispered, as I pressed my lips against his.
To my surprise, I felt myself being pushed backwards.
Travis stared at me with digust, as he wiped his lips with the back of his hand.
"What the hell is wrong with you?!" Travis shouted, making me flinch. "I don't even know who you are!"
Travis went back into his house, slamming the door behind.
And all I could feel is utter heartbreak and anger.

    Chapter 11
"What do you hate most about people?" Travis asked, as we sat side by side at lunch the next school morning.
Normally, I would be sitting at my usual seat with Scarlet in the lunch room, but today, she had cheerleading practice with her squad.
I kind of got used to all of the staring from other students by now, so when everyone gasped at the fact that I was going to sit with Travis for lunch, I ignored them all.
"That's a sudden question." I joked, but Travis' face was entirely serious. I bit my lower lip, frowning. "What do I hate about people? Like, their characteristics or what?"
Travis nodded, reaching over my tray to steal one of my fries.
I bit back a laugh, as I swatted his hand away.
"Well, I do hate it when people take my things without asking." I teased.
Travis rolled his eyes, as grabbing a handful of my fries.
"Other than that?" he muffled with a mouthful of fries.
I pursed my lips in concentration, shrugging.
The question Travis hit me with was kind of sudden.
My mind went blank, as I let out a sigh, leaning back in my chair.
"I don't really know." I mumbled. "I guess I hate it when people are dishonest."
Travis frowned, as he leaned over the table with interest. "Example, please."
I licked my lips, throwing my head back in frustration.
As much as I hated it, I only said dishonesty because of how Scarlet has been acting lately.
"Well, take Scarlet for example." I started off. "I know she's hiding something from me, but she won't tell me. And she's been snapping at me lately for no reason."
Travis' eyes flickered for a split second, before they went dull and blank again.
I was frustrated at the fact that I could never read what Travis was thinking in his mind.
Most people could judge someone's emotions by the look on their face, but that was not the case when it came to Travis.
Travis was like a blank sheet of paper.
"What about you?" I switched the subject over to him. "What do you hate about people?"
Travis groaned, running a hand through his messy dark hair.
He shrugged, as the shoulder sleeve of his hoodie fell off, exposing the side of his skull tattoo.
"I hate selfish people." Travis finally said with a deep breath. "I hate people who only care about money and themselves."
I frowned, as I realized how much emotion Travis said it with.
I raised an eyebrow, licking my lips.
"Do you know someone whose selfish?" I asked.
Travis' eyes snapped up to me in panic, before he hesitantly shook his head.
    "N-no." he stuttered.
I rolled my eyes, groaning. "You're being dishonest with me, Travis. Who is it?"
Travis sank back in his seat, slouching with defeat. "If I tell you, Riley, then you would think differently of me."
I gave him a bland stare, before rolling my eyes. "Don't think so low of me."
Travis narrowed his eyes, before sighing. "It's my parents."

    Chapter 5
The next morning, I surprisingly found Scarlet waiting by my locker.
She had her back against my metal locker, as she stood there waiting for me patiently.
When she saw me from down the hall, she stood up on her two feet.
She gave me a warm smile, waving at me from the distance.
    So what now?
Did she decide to finally apologize to me for blowing up on me in front of the entire cafeteria?
"Hi Riley!" she smiled bubbily, as I opened my locker to get out my books for the morning.
I gave her a tight smile, not looking at her in the eyes.
    "Hi Scarlet." I mumbled.
Scarlet curled the end of her side braid with the tip of her fingers, as she continued to smile at me, like there was nothing wrong.
"So, I thought about over the past night," she paused, as I finally stared up at her, "and I totally want to tell you that I forgive you for what you did."
My eyes snapped up to hers, as I stared at my best friend of six years with disbelief.
I studied her face for a moment longer, trying to find any traces of sarcasm.
Sadly, I didn't find an ounce of playfulness.
    Scarlet was completely serious.
"Forgive me for what I did?" I uttered out, still in shock. "What did I do?"
Scarlet rolled her eyes, letting out a bitter laugh.
"For annoying me about questions of Travis." Scarlet smiled. "It's okay, I know it's going to be hard to say sorry, so I'm just going to forgive you."
I blinked at her with my jaw still dropped.
Never have I ever wanted to rip out someone's hair more than I did right now.
"Anyways, moving on!" she giggled, looping her arm around mine. "I just got these new pair of heels that I want you to see."
    ***
"And then, she tells me that she forgives me for asking too many questions about you!" I snapped angrily, venting my feelings out to Travis.
Travis laughed, as he took a long drag out of his cigarette.
I honestly don't know how we ended up here together at the park bench, but we did. just like we had yesterday.
"No offense, but your so called best friend seems like a complete bit-"
I glared at him. "Don't even finish that sentence."
Travis rolled his eyes, pushing my shoulder. "You're such a pushover."
I gawked, as I stared at Travis with wide eyes. "I am not!"
"Yes, you are." Travis let out a puff of smoke, as I coughed. "Here she is, walking all over you, and you're letting her."
I glared at him, before crossing my arms stubbornly.
"What do you know, Travis?" I snapped. "You aren't a girl!"
Travis chuckled, before tossing his cigarette bud onto the concrete.
    "Damn right I'm not."

    Chapter 4
"What is that?" I asked, pointing to Travis' shoulder.
He turned around, frowning. "What is what?"
"That." I rolled my eyes, poking my finger against his shoulder that barely exposed one of his tattoos. "What tattoo is that?"
Travis smirked, as he unzipped his black hoodie, taking it off to show me his entire left arm that was covered with ink.
My eyes widened when I saw that he completely bare under the sweatshirt, though.
I choked on my saliva, as I stared at Travis with disbelief. "Why aren't you wearing a shirt under your hoodie?" I snapped.
Travis gave me a smug smile, before shrugging. "I don't think there's a point in it."
I blinked, staring at his pale abdomen that had just enough abs.
My cheeks turned red once I caught myself staring, as I looked away.
I heard Travis chuckling under his breath, before he turned to his side, showing me his entire left arm.
"This," he pointed to the area that I questioned about, "is a skull."
I stared at it longer, noticing that it wasn't your regular animated skull tattoo.
In fact, it was much more graphic, and had much more detail that made it scary.
"What does it mean?" I muttered, mesmerized by the skull.
Travis laughed, before he sank back into the bench, staring off at the ground.
"It has a funny story to it." he smiled. "The thing is, the skull was my first tattoo. And I got it when I was drunk."
I raised an unimpressed eyebrow. "That's nice." I sarcastically mumbled.
Travis rolled his eyes. "Let me finish, Riley." he paused. "So when I was getting it, I was completely wasted. But, some of my buds that were with me were sober. So, they told the tattoo artist to give me something daring. When I woke up the next morning and saw my tattoo the first time, not drunk, I kind of liked it. I decided that it would mean no fear. Like a rebel, you know?"
I smiled, before nodding. "A rebel." I repeated. "It suits you perfectly."
Travis snorted, before taking a cigarette out of his jean pocket.
Before lighting it, he turned to me with a smirk. "Never use that word around me, ever again."
I frowned, as Travis lighted up his cigarette, sticking it in between his lips.
    "Use what word?" I asked.
Travis inhaled the smoke, before letting it all out. "Perfect."
"Why not?" I asked, sitting up straighter.
Travis shrugged his bare shoulders, his hoodie still laying on his lap.
"Perfect is such a bad word." Travis muttered, flicking the ashes of his cigarette. "Perfect is... overrated."
I stared at Travis' face for a moment longer, finding no traces of playfulness whatsoever.
Sinking back into the bench, I thought about his words.
    Perfect is overrated.
    Well said, Travis Kapone.

    Chapter 24
    "Arden?"
My eyes snapped towards Evan, who looked pale and ghostly.
I stared at him with tears in my eyes, trying my best to bite my lips from quivering.
I've never always heard stories from Lacey on how heartbreak felt like.
But, I never prepared myself for something like this.
    This was beyond heartbreak.
    This was betrayal.
    And it hurt, so bad.
I felt numb and cold. All I could think of was how much my heart was aching.
Evan licked his lips, staring at the frame in my hand.
He gulped, as he began to step closer to me with a look of regret on his face.
"Arden, let me explain." he started off, holding my hands.
I ripped my wrists away from him, as tears blurred my vision.
"You don't need to." I croaked.
I held up the picture frame of Hollis in my hands, laughing bitterly. "Hollis already told me everything."
Evan's face fell, as he shook his head.
"No, Arden. I need you to understand that-"
"Understand what?!" I snapped, pushing his chest away from mine. "Understand the fact that all this time, you didn't even like me? This whole time, I was just your replacement for your ex-girlfriend? This whole time, when you kissed me, I actually thought it mean something?!"
I stared into Evan's eyes, as he stared down at his feet.
I pushed his face towards mine angrilly, making him stare into my moist eyes.
"I understand, Evan." I whispered. "Everything. I understand that you lied me this whole time."
I pushed his face away, storming out of his room.
He grabbed my wrists, stopping me from walking more than two steps.
"Arden, I wasn't lying to you." Evan said calmly.
    I wanted to scream.
How could he be so calm in a situation like this?
"What do you call it then?" I asked. "Did you just forget to mention the fact that the ex-girlfriend you still love looks exactly like me?"
Evan looked so guilty, I was wanted to crawl into a hole.
"I hate you, Evan Chandler. You used me this whole time. And you know what? I can't believe I was so stupid to think that you actually wanted me. But no, you just wanted Hollis back, even though-"
Suddenly, Evan pulled the back of my neck towards his face.
He pressed his lips upon mine.
The kiss this time wasn't slow and sweet like all the others.
This kiss was full of desperation and passion.
I almost kissed him back, back I snapped into my senses.
I pushed him away, as he collided his back against the wall.
He stared at me with wide eyes, as tears streamed down my face.
"What's wrong with you?!" I shouted.
Evan looked defeated, as he sighed. "Arden, I like you."
I clenched my fists. "No you don't. If you did, you wouldn't hurt me like that."
He stepped closer to me his breath lingering on my lips. "Arden, I care about you. A lot, honestly."
I squeezed my eyes shut, turning my back against him.
"Screw you, Evan." I paused, his face dropping. "I never want to talk to you, ever again."

    Chapter 20
Hollis, the name that has haunted me weeks.
Evan stared back at me with a pale and white face, looking almost ghostly.
He looked as if he realized exactly what just came out of his mouth, and instantly wanted to take it back with regret.
But, I wasn't going to let Evan slip away this time.
I've waited far too long, curiously lingering about who Hollis was.
I was determined to find out Evan's background with her, because if I didn't, I don't know if I could handle being around Evan anymore.
"Hollis?" my voice shook. "Evan, tell me who Hollis is."
Evan tore his gaze away from me, staring at the ocean with rage in his eyes.
"I told you, Arden." he muttered. "Hollis was a dog."
I rolled my eyes. I was sick and tired of the lies Evan was feeding me.
"Do you enjoy lying to me?" I asked, biting my lower lip.
Evan flinched, as me pressed his lips together tightly.
"I'm not lying." he gritted through his teeth.
I stared at him with disbelief, before I walked past him.
If Evan wasn't going to tell me, then I know who was.
"Where are you going?" his exasperated voice asked, as his hand latched onto my wrist.
I glared at him. "I'm going to find Aiden. He'll tell me, won't he?"
Evan clenched his strong jaw line, licking his lips.
"Why do you even care so much?" he asked.
Did he really just ask me that?
    Why I cared so much?
I slammed my fists against his chest angrilly, glaring up at him.
"You are a complete idiot if you don't think I care about you!"
The words sputtered out of my mouth before I could stop them.
    But, I don't regret a thing.
Evan's features softened up, as his lips parted.
His soft hand stroked my cheek, as I let out a ragged breath.
"Hollis was my ex-girlfriend." he started off, making my stomach churn. "We dated for two years, and I actually thought that she was my everything. But a year ago, she just happened to be at a bad place at a bad time."
I held in my breath, bracing myself for what he was going to tell me.
"She got caught in the middle of two gangs in a shooting." his voice began to crack. He bit his lower lip, clenching his jaw by his sides. "She got shot trying to call the police."
A single tear slid from Evan's eyes, as I felt my heart drop to the pit of my stomach.
    "D-did she-"
"She died on the way to the hospital." he finished off.
And right then and there, I wanted to puke.
I wanted to drop on my knees, and bury my hands in my face.
But, I did the only thing I've been wanting to do for the entire night.
I grabbed Evan from the back of his neck, and pulled his lips towards mine.
I couldn't help but wonder if he was thinking about Hollis while he was kissing me.

    Chapter 19
After spending some time at the party, Evan and I figured that it wasn't quite our scene.
"Come on." Evan said, lacing his fingers through mine.
He took me by surprise, as he gave me a small smile. "I know this place that's kind of quiet."
I began to follow Evan towards an area of the beach that was stranded.
I was okay with it being empty, thought.
I was kind of getting tired of the loud party scene, anyways.
He led me by a tower of rocks, as the two of us began to climb onto them carefully.
When we got onto the top, I knew exactly why Evan wanted me to come here.
The view of the beach was gorgeous, even in the night time.
The moon shined lit up the entire ocean, and the stars were much bigger and brighter up here.
"Wow." I muttered. "How often do you come here?"
Something flashed through Evan's eyes, as if he was thinking back to a memory.
You would never know how badly I wanted to know what he was thinking at that exact moment.
I wanted to know, because I saw thousands of emotions running through his green eyes.
There was happiness, anger, pain, saddness, a little bit of everything.
"Evan?" I repeated, raising an eyebrow. "Did you hear me?"
Evan snapped out of his thoughts, as he stared back at me. "Sorry, what did you say?"
I licked my lips, biting them back from asking too many questions. "I asked how often do you come here?"
"I used to come here all the time." a faint smile appeared across his lips. "But, I stopped a while ago."
    I pursed my lips, nodding.
I wasn't exactly satisfied with his answer, but it'll have to do.
"So, why were you running so late today?" I asked, trying to lighten up the mood.
"I just had to do something for my parent's stupid company." he muttered.
"Stupid?" I asked. "Why do you say that?"
Evan bit his lower lip, eyes studying the waves. "It's stupid because it's all they ever care about. They're always out on business meetings, and useless crap like that. They already have enough money, and they just want more. They're stupid and selfish."
I frowned, staring at him carefully.
This was a side I've never seen of Evan before.
He was always an optimistic character, but now, he was the exact opposite.
It almost broke my heart seeing him like this.
"You don't mean that." I whispered.
His angry eyes shot over to me. "Yes, I do." he grit through his teeth.
I twisted my lips. "But, no matter how much you despise them for not being there for you, they're your family."
"If they were my family, they would've been there for me when Hollis died!" he snapped.

    Chapter 16
"A drive in movie?" I small smile spread across my face.
I looked around, noticing that we were the only car that was parked in front of the movie here tonight. "Where's everyone? Aren't these places usually packed?"
Evan looked down at his feet, biting his lower lip.
"I kind of rented this place for just the two of us tonight."
My eyes widened. "What? That must've cost you a fortune!"
Evan shrugged, licking his lips. "It's going to be worth it though, right?"
I blushed, refusing to look at the teasing look in his eyes. "Right."
Evan chuckled, holding his hand out for me.
"Come on. The movie starts in a few minutes. Do you want to sit on the roof of the car?"
    I smiled, nodding eagerly.
I've always wanted to go watch a black and white movie at the drive in theater.
Evan helped me up to the roof of his car, where we got a perfect view of the screen.
He sat down beside me, as the cool wind blew my hair behind my head.
"What movie is playing?" I asked.
"Casablanca, I think." Evan smiled, as the screen lit up.
    Casablanca was a classic.
If I said that I wasn't eager about the date tonight, I would be lying.
During the middle of the movie, my eyes were locked on the screen.
Suddenly, a flash went off, making my eyes snap over to Evan.
He had his camera held up to his face, as he pulled away.
"Hey!" I hissed, trying to get the camera away from him.
Evan stared at the little screen on the camera, smiling.
"You look beautiful." he commented, showing me the picture.
I frowned, leaning over closer to him to take a better look.
When I stared at the screen, I didn't see anything special.
My eyes weren't even staring at the camera, and my hair looked like a complete brown mess from the wind constantly blowing it.
"What's so special about this?" I asked, staring up at Evan.
My eyes widened, when I realized just how close I leaned into him.
When I tilted my head up, my nose was barely brushing against his.
I gulped, as I bit on my lower lip.
    "I-I, uh-" I stuttered.
I stared into Evan's green orbs, forgetting about what I wanted to say.
He just took my breath away.
My eyes flickered down to his rosy red lips, before I turned into a crimson red color.
    "Everything." he whispered.
And just like that, he kissed me.
    Happy Valentine's Day.

    Chapter 13
His nose was barely brushing against mine.
And our lips, if we moved a mere inch, we'd be kissing.
Evan's eyes flickered down to my lips, as I held in my breath.
He leaned closer, and I didn't do anything to stop him.
Why wasn't I pushing him away?
For Gods sake, I met this guy through a stupid auction.
Yet, I still wanted him to kiss me so badly.
Our lips brushed for a brief second, before we were inturrupted by a pounding noise.
Evan removed his lips from mine, as our eyes locked.
I couldn't read what was going through in his green eyes.
He got up from me, and faced the door of the ice cream parlour.
"We aren't open." Evan shook his head.
The pounding stopped, as Evan turned back to face me.
Without another word, he went to the back lounge.
I laid flat on the ground, as my shaky hands touched my lips.
The kiss was so short, yet so amazing.
    I almost wanted more.
I pushed myself off the ground, and took my apron off.
Evan came back out of the back lounge, looking as if nothing happened between us.
    It almost broke my heart.
"Do you need a ride home?" he asked me, a faint smile across his face.
I gulped, shaking my head. "I could walk."
Evan forced a smile, but it never reached his eyes. "Okay. I'll see you at work tomorrow."
    And that was it.
Just like that, Evan got away with my first kiss.

"Arden?" Lacey poked my cheek. "Did you hear a word I just said?"
I snapped out of my thoughts, as I turned back to my best friend.
    "Wait, what?" I asked, frowning.
Lacey sighed. "I said that Brandon's planning to take me out later tonight."
"Oh. Okay, where?" I asked, half-interested.
I should've been paying full attention to my best friend, but too much was on my mind.
"To this new Japanese restaurant that just opened." Lacey paused, giving me a look. "Can you tell me what's bothering you?"
I let out a deep breath of air. "Evan took something important from me this weekend."
Lacey's eyes widened. "No way." she gasped. "Tell me you used protection!"
I choked, shaking my head. "Not that!" I hissed. "He stole my first kiss."
Lacey went into a misfit of giggles. "Oh my gosh! My little Arden is growing up!"
I slapped her shoulder. "Shut up. But, he acted like nothing happened after."
"I'm pretty sure he was just scared you didn't like him back. Boys are like that, you know? All bi-polar and stuff. And they think us girls are moody. Please." Lacey rolled her eyes.
I bit my lower lip. "I hope you're right."

    Chapter 12
"Well, he told me that Hollis was the ice cream parlour's mascot dog." I paused. "But, I don't believe that for a minute."
Aiden looked uneasy, as he took a long gulp from his drink.
"I-I don't think I should be the one to tell you about Hollis." Aiden admitted.
My heart sank to the pit of my stomach, as I leaned back in my seat.
So Hollis wasn't the mascot dog, was she?
She was so much more than that.
"Why not?" I asked with irritation clear in my voice.
Aiden licked his lips, giving me a nervous smile.
"Listen, there will come a time when Evan tells you about Hollis." Aiden promised. "Just not now."
I cursed under my breath. "Fine."
"Your not mad, are you?" Aiden asked cautiously.
I let out a breath of air, shaking my head. "No." I lied.
"Good." he paused. "Just try not to bring up Hollis from now to the time of your Valentine's date with him, okay?"
I nodded, licking my dry lips. "Okay."
    ***
There was a week left until Valentine's Day, and I've been trying to bite my tongue whenever Evan was around.
I've been working shifts with him in the ice cream parlour, so it wasn't easy, either.
"I'm going to head home now." Paul told Evan and I, tossing Evan the keys.
"I want to two of you to lock up, alright?" he raised an eyebrow.
We nodded, as he left the ice cream parlour.
Today wasn't as busy as most days, so I understood why Paul left early.
"Want to close up and just hang around here for a while?" Evan asked, already flipping the lights off.
"Would we get in trouble?" I asked.
Evan smirked. "What Paul won't know won't hurt him."
I smiled, as I helped him clean up for the night.
After we were done, we got some of the leftover ice cream, and sat on the cashier counters.
I licked my spoon, as Evan played with his camera.
    "Look up." he instructed me.
My head snapped up while the pink spoon was in my mouth.
Evan's camera let out a big flash, as I squeezed my eyes closed.
    "Evan!" I hissed. "Delete it."
Evan showed me the picture, and sure enough, I looked ridiculous.
My eyes were shut close, and the spoon was sticking out of my mouth.
"Come it, it's not so bad." he teased, as I tried to grab the camera. "I think it might be even yearbook worthy."
My eyes widened, as I hopped off the counter.
"Evan, one last time." I warned. "Delete it now, or I will."
Evan grinned, and shook his head.
My jaw dropped, as I began to chase him for it.
"Just let me delete it!" I snapped, jumping on his back.
Evan fell backward, making me fall down first.
He hovered over me, pinning me to the ground.

    Chapter 2
I watched as my best friend grace the stage the next afternoon with a smile across her face.
"This is Lacey Daniels, one of the infamous members of our school's cheerleading team!" Eliza called through the microphone, earning hoots from many jocks. "We'll start the bid at fourty dollars."
Immediately, a hand shot up. "I call fifty!"
    "Sixty!"
    "Seventy!"
    "Ninety five!"
There was a moment of silence, making Lacey nervous, as she stood under the bright stage lights.
"Ninety five? Going once? Going twice!" Eliza said, waiting for someone's hand to shoot up.
"One hundred ten!" a voice suddenly called out, raising up their hand.
I watched as a smile of relief spread across Lacey's lips.
"One hundred and ten dollars, sold to Brandon Powell!" Eliza announced, slamming her gavel down on the podium.
The audience erupted into cheers, as Lacey bounced off the stage.
"Next up, we have," Eliza paused, squinting her eyes down on the sheet of paper written in front of her, "Arden Mason!"
My heart sank to the bottom of my stoamch, as my eyes widened.
    Did she just say-
"Arden Mason! Come up here!" Eliza smiled down at me, her eyes locking into mine. "I see you in the audience!"
Suddenly, a group of people began to chant my name, urging for me to go up to that stage.
My feet were glued to the floor, as my mouth pouted open.
"Arden, go!" a girl shoved me out of my seat, making me stagger up.
My legs wobbled, as I made my way down the middle aisle, stepping up on the stage.
The bright lights made it hard for me to see, but I could make out Lacey giving me two thumbs up.
    Oh, that little-
"We have Arden Mason here who is part of our school's photography club!" Eliza said through the microphone, voice high and over excited.
"Actually, I quit in freshman year." I corrected her, making her shoot a glare at me from the corner of her eyes.
"Let's start the bid at twenty five dollars!" she ignored me.
I pursed my lips, crossing my arms.
I watched as my best friend gave me an apologetic smile from the crowd.
In return, I gave her a death glare.
How could she do this to me?
God, I was going to be so humiliated when no one bids on me.
This entire Valentine's Day auction was a big joke, anyways.
"Sixty five dollars! Is anyone willing to raise the bid?" Eliza suddenly cut my thoughts off.
My eyes widened, as I stared at her with disbelief.
Did someone just bid sixty five dollars to go on a stupid date with me?
"Seventy five dollars!" one hollered, making me raise an eyebrow.
In my opinion, bidding over thirty dollars on a date with some stranger was just plain dumb.
"Going once! Going twice!" Eliza paused, a grin spreading across her face. "Sold to Evan Chandler for seventy five dollars!"
    Evan Chandler?
The name rang a bell in my head, but I couldn't exactly pin point who he was.
"Thanks for signing up to help the school!" Eliza gave me a fake smile before I exited the stage.
"I didn't even sign up!" I hissed under my breath.
As I made my way back to my seat, I made myself a mental note to kill Lacey later on.
But first, I had to know who this Evan guy was, and why he bidded seventy five dollars on me.

    Chapter 1
"Hannah Peters, going once! Going twice!" the student council president, Eliza Monroe, shouted through the microphone. "Sold to Reece Baker for seventy dollars!"
The audience erupted into cheers, as the perky blonde stepped off the stage, leaping into Reece's arms.
This event happened every year at South Bay High School. Every year at the start of February, the student council would hold an auction as a fundraiser for the school. It wasn’t any ordinary auction, where people would bid for rare antiques or crap like that. It was an auction, where people could bid for dates for Valentine’s Day. Girls or guys would sign up to be auctioned, and there would be an audience of students who would bid for these people.
In my entire three years at South Bay, I've never participated at one of these auctions.
I always sat back, and laughed at the ones who didn't get any bids on, at all.
"The next one is Callie Douglas, the leader of our school's book club."
Unfortunetly, Callie wasn't as good looking as Hannah.
She had wide-rimmed glasses on, unruly curly hair, and looked extrememly nervous under the stage lights.
"Let's start the bid at ten dollars?" Eliza smiled weakly at the crowd.
    No one said a word.
Poor Callie looked like she was going to faint.
"How about five?" Eliza asked, biting her lower lip.
A rude jock smirked from the audience. "Bring out the hot chicks!" he booed.
I watched as a sparkly tear fell from Callie's eyes.
Eliza turned to Callie with a weak smile. "Sorry, Callie. Try again next year!"
I watched as Callie Douglas ran off that stage, and dash into the bathroom, joining the other girls who didn't get any bids.
"That concludes our auction today. If anyone else would like to voluenteer to be auctioned, please sign up at the desk outside the main office." Eliza spoke, as everyone got up to leave.
I met up with my best friend, Lacey Daniels, outside the auction.
Lacey always signed up for these auctions, since our first year here.
She always got bidded at a high price, just because she was extremely gorgeous, and was a cheerleader.
"So, Arden, are you signing up or what?" Lacey waved the clipboard in my face.
I rolled my eyes. "No. Did you see the way Callie got humiliated up there?"
    Lacey sighed, shaking her head.
"Don't worry. Someone will bid big on you. You're so pretty!" she beamed, curling the ends of my brown hair with her fingertips. "Trust me."
I gave her a look, raising an eyebrow.
"Convincing," I paused, sticking my tongue out at her, "but no."
Lacey groaned, shrugging her shoulders. "Fine. Meet me outside, I want to use the bathroom real quick."
